There are the usual technology bugs, and then there are high-tech embarrassments that are way out of the ordinary. This one is perhaps the strangest quirk I've heard of since reading the story of a user whose bracelet with a magnetic clasp was tricking her notebook into thinking the lid was closed, but this one's far more humiliating for the manufacturer than a little jewelry snafu. Namely: Amazon's vaunted Kindle can't properly pronounce the name of the President of the United States.
That's a bit of a problem when you're positioning your product as a replacement for newspapers -- where coverage of the President is a daily event -- and touting its read-aloud system as well.
The New York Times (no stranger to writing about the Prez) says that the name "Barack Obama," when read aloud by the Kindle's computerized text-to-speech system, sounds something like "Brack Alabama."
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos laughed about the gaffe, calling it "unfortunate," but the company has nonetheless hustled out a fix via its text-to-speech partner Nuance, which promises to correct the pronunciation of the name. That patch will be delivered wirelessly to Kindles automatically in the near future, if it hasn't already.
No word, however, on how the Kindle handles the pronunciation of the words "Ahmadinejad," "Schwarzenegger," "Guantanamo," or "nuclear."
Of course, the Kindle hardly marks the first time Obama's name has given someone trouble. For your Friday afternoon amusement, take a trip back to 2004, when Obama was a brand new kid on the political block, when David Letterman offered the inevitable "Top Ten Ways to Mispronounce Barack Obama." Kindle's unique spin on the name, alas, doesn't make the list.

Ya, if you can't anything good... don't say it at all... or better yet, mis-pronounce. Heck, I never even heard of the name Barack before he popped up.. so why would this article claim it to be an "embarrassment" and "strangest quirk I've heard of"... please, the writer is OBVIOUSLY a HACK for Obama. Stop with the biased reporting and just tell the story like this.. ready. "Machine can't pronounce Obama", there, see.. no biases, no reading between the lines. Just the story!
Republicans are the first to whine about fair play and respecting the office even if you didn't vote for their candidate, but that all changes when a BLACK DEMOCRAT is elected. Shows the ironic double standard that exists in the party of Rush Limbaugh. It's people like this which explains why the Republican party is on its way to extinction. Everyone gets it but them.
If it is a psychologivcally-correct device, it should just say "malignant narcissist" when it encounters BO's names.
Cares Who???? Yes it is backwards like the rest of the world!!!!
#23 post: You are a typical controlling liberal. I'm sure #14 is just angry that we have a marxist president that no TRUE american will support.
Why do we care what it can pronounce? I read books and don't need anyone to read to me! Besides, my family is big enough without any more input from anyone.
I feel like I have to take dumb pills to understand some of you. Those of you using this story/comment section to take shots at Obama have got to be some of the biggest idiots on the net. If you have some serios issues with the pres, find a real way to discuss and debate them. My favorite comment is the fool that refuses to say Barak's name...priceless.
I can say the name but automatically I start sobbing uncontrollably when I do? Wow...even just thinking about him like now I'm welling up.
Lazy people. Whatever happened to reading real books??
Ha ... well in about 1355 days(end of his term) we wont have to worry about how to pronounce his name...cept in history books.
WTF I just mistyped Bracks name in my post. Someone kill me. I guess I do belong with all the other animals on this board.
Huh?
Wow it must be a really slow news day for this to make the front page!
WHO CARES??
wow. I just did it again. Barack (just to prove that I can do it)
I like Alabama better
Today must be a slow tech news day huh?
It must be racist. Can't wait for MSNBC to do an expose` on this obviously conservative inspired contraption.
Try Stalin or Lenin in place of Obama as they are interchangeable anyway. Maybe the Kindle will have an easier time of it!

Many people cannot pronounce the words from the newspaper. If this is the only "bad" thing to say about the Kindle, that is good news. The Kindle is a great reading/storage device and will only get better. The feature of increasing the test size allows visually handicapped readers to rediscover the love of reading.
