Amazon's Kindle can't say "Obama"

There are the usual technology bugs, and then there are high-tech embarrassments that are way out of the ordinary. This one is perhaps the strangest quirk I've heard of since reading the story of a user whose bracelet with a magnetic clasp was tricking her notebook into thinking the lid was closed, but this one's far more humiliating for the manufacturer than a little jewelry snafu. Namely: Amazon's vaunted Kindle can't properly pronounce the name of the President of the United States.

That's a bit of a problem when you're positioning your product as a replacement for newspapers -- where coverage of the President is a daily event -- and touting its read-aloud system as well.

The New York Times (no stranger to writing about the Prez) says that the name "Barack Obama," when read aloud by the Kindle's computerized text-to-speech system, sounds something like "Brack Alabama."

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos laughed about the gaffe, calling it "unfortunate," but the company has nonetheless hustled out a fix via its text-to-speech partner Nuance, which promises to correct the pronunciation of the name. That patch will be delivered wirelessly to Kindles automatically in the near future, if it hasn't already.

No word, however, on how the Kindle handles the pronunciation of the words "Ahmadinejad," "Schwarzenegger," "Guantanamo," or "nuclear."

Of course, the Kindle hardly marks the first time Obama's name has given someone trouble. For your Friday afternoon amusement, take a trip back to 2004, when Obama was a brand new kid on the political block, when David Letterman offered the inevitable "Top Ten Ways to Mispronounce Barack Obama." Kindle's unique spin on the name, alas, doesn't make the list.

It would have had no trouble pronouncing, "McCain." Even Kindle knows we have the wrong President.

If the Kindle can't say "Obama", try "The President". I dont remember anyone calling the President of the United States by his last name only since Eisenhower. Is that good or bad? Anyway, I read newspapers and go online on my PC to read the news. I dont have to pay $300 for a gadget that will be outdated in a couple of years just to keep up with the Joneses.

In my part of the country, most of the people who voted for him can't pronounce his name either...

#84... We did have too many ----- idiots ----- up the country... The ones who voted Bush in twice because Bush just ----- ed this country all the way up... Oh and to all you idiots who just want to disrespect Obama every chance you get... How about you just wait until he actually does something wrong? I mean he hasn't done anything wrong yet so all of you can just shut the ----- up for now... Although I'm pretty sure he can't ----- this country worse than Bush already has...

When converting the text to speech. . . wouldn't it be easier to just phonetically spell the President's name? for example, "Ba-rock oh-bomb-uh" ? just a thought. Not that I claim to know how that system "text to speech" system works. Maybe I'm off base.

Arun Baheti was the person who was in charge of this service many years ago but it appears they no longer offer it. like the kindle but was hoping that there would be something that could be offered by the government. Some time ago the State of California had a great service to notify citizens of various services to their PDAs or wireless devices. I think that government should offer services that can be downloaded to your kindle. http://www.govtech.com/gt/articles/5163

Hmm, maybe I need to get one of these little machines after all! I have to admit that for a moment I enjoyed thinking that maybe the Kindle was programmed with this little, uh, "glitch." =o)

This is simply not that big a deal. Actually from the samples I've heard, I'm fairly impressed with how well the Kindle does with speech. But yes it does show that we do have a ways to go in this area of tech.

sounds like people aren't very upset about this - except for maybe the author. the Kindle is for reading anyway - the Text to Speech is just a convenience.
