Microsoft confirms Windows 7 Starter Edition changes

The rumors I wrote about last week involving the lifting of Windows 7 Starter Edition's three-application limit have turned out to be true: Microsoft confirms that it is lifting the three-app limit "based on the feedback we’ve received from partners and customers asking us to enable a richer small notebook PC experience."

However, Windows 7 Starter will retain a number of its restrictions -- a few I hadn't even known about -- which will make it unappealing to many users. Microsoft outlines them all in the blog post above, but the highlights include:

> No personalization options (changing background images/wallpapers or sounds)
> No Aero
> No DVD playback
> No Media Center features at all
> No domain support
> No XP virtualization mode
> No multi-monitor support

Those are hefty restrictions, but Microsoft has a solution for you if you want more.

The answer? Upgrade: Windows 7 Home Premium should run on many, if not most, netbooks out there, letting you put your cat's picture instead of the wavy blue default (or whatever image Microsoft ultimately makes the standard on Windows 7).

That of course begs the question what Windows 7 pricing will be like in its various flavors, and so far Microsoft has been playing that issue close to the vest. Windows 7 Starter users will surely qualify for an upgrade discount vs. buying a full retail copy, but how much?

If history is any guide, users should expect to pay an extra $70 to $170 for the right to jump up a step or two in the Win 7 hierarchy.

That said, some troubling signs are bubbling up that Windows 7 may be pricier than you and I would like it to be: One recent story suggests that Dell is already concerned that price is going to be an issue with consumers, and that Windows 7's average selling price is going to be higher than it was with either Windows Vista or XP. Ugh.

this is amazing: two things most netbook owners would want to do: change wallpaper watch a DVD, like a portable DVD player Please only use Linux with your netbook and teach Microsoft a lesson in understanding your customer base.

Again with this nonsense about Starter Edition. Null, why do you continue to post this information? Starter Edition does not apply to anyone probably reading this blog. People who are reading this blog already own a PC so all you are doing is spreading information to create hatred towards Microsoft. In addition, most of these people do not know the difference between Starter edition and Home Basic. So these limitations will not apply to them- however, now they think Microsoft will limit them intentionally. Null I challenge you to read Microsofts information about this directly and if you want I will point out some links so you do not confuse the readers of this blog.

I don't see why I should pay ANYTHING for a system that is to replace one that was doomed from the outset!

wakistler01- are you a real person or just an apple fanbot? Doomed OS you ask? explain why....please.... Something enlightening hopefully- discuss technically- doomed IPv6? doomed IPSEC? doomed remote app? Do these terms mean anything to you? prolly not- so your uneducated opinion is seen as a foolish comment. And when fools have money - there money will be soon taken from them and given to Steve Jobs...

Microsoft is always been a company that says a whole lot of things, how much of it is useful and true for the customer is always a question.

Gee can you say "Loss leader"? Sucker them in with a ridiculous price then hit them hard when you have them trapped! We have been converting our existing machines to Linux/Ubuntu for several months now. The biggest surprise is how well the old machines run under Linux! For example I have a P4 RAMBUS machine with "only" 748Mb that runs five apps at once under Ubuntu. We have converted 6 of our 8 machines and the problems get fewer as the WIndows population on our LAN decreases! A lot of stuff that wouldn't run under Vista runs just fine with Ubuntu/WIne! Now what to do with all the money we are saving on hardware and software ... LOL

So aa4mw- you are a 65 year old person who converts windows machines to linux machines. You are excited that a linux machine can run five applications? I can 50 easily on Vista and thirty each on three different virtualized operating systems. My question is- are you for real? Or are you just some bot. My guess is you are a bot like the rest.
