As the technology fades, plasma TVs see huge discounts

The exodus toward flat-screen TVs continues, and that's been driving prices down across the board.

But if you're looking for the real deals, plasma is where it's at for now, according to a story in the Wall Street Journal.

What's going on? Put simply, plasma is a technology on its way out. Pioneer and Vizio have already announced this year that they're exiting the market, as manufacturers continue to pour their resources into LCD technology. LCD, used widely across the consumer electronics industry in not just televisions but also computer monitors, laptops, and even cameras and cell phones, has boundless momentum. Plasma, with its higher power requirements, larger size and weight, and finicky reliability, has remained TV-centric since its invention, despite some key benefits that have given the technology something of a cult following.

Meanwhile, there are still plenty of plasmas on the market, and not just close-out models. And diligent shoppers can find exceptional deals on plasma sets: Roughly 20 percent cheaper vs. LCD sets of the same size.

The WSJ story linked above note that a 50-inch LCD will run you $1,500 on average, while a 50-inch plasma runs about $1,200. Although prices vary widely from brand to brand and depend a lot on the features you select, in general the trend follows across the industry. Drop into any big-box electronics store and you're sure to see big discounts on all the plasma sets for sale.

Naturally there's a catch: As plasma vanishes from the market, you'll have an increasing amount of trouble finding someone who can service the set if it breaks. You'll also be stuck buying a very large set if you want a plasma: The technology starts at 42 inches diagonally, and you'll probably need a friend to help you move the thing, too.

Not everyone's giving up on plasma, though: Panasonic, which has long been the extreme market share leader in the plasma category, continues to invest in the technology and just constructed a new $3 billion plant to build the screens. What, didn't they get the memo?

We spent a GREAT deal of time deliberating over plasma and LCD when my husband and I decided to make a purchase. Since we didn't expect to have to sit right in front of the television and wanted something with TRUE black, and wanted to enjoy movies in the dark as well as in the light we went with PLASMA.... Oh and we didn't need to break it in for 200+hrs.....it has built in BURN protection....and weighs less then 100lbs.... (which is impressive for the 50 inches of beast that is mounted on the wall) AND we purchased the EXTENDED warranty....and ALL of this...for UNDER $1,000 6 months later....still working as GREAT as the day we purchased it...

jaymie.johnson—How did he defame journalism? Was he saying that journalism was ... what? A whore? And consumerism? I missed the part where he said consumerism cheated in math. I'm not sure you know what defamation means. Aside from that, I think you missed what he was saying in the article. He wasn't trying to say electronic retailers aren't SELLING them. He's saying the manufacturers are ceasing to MAKE them. Big difference, chief.

For what it is, I enjoy having my Vizio 42" Plasma. Features are plenty and color is magnificent. Of course, I'd like to get one or more HDTVs to replace my other standard TVs in the house. Whether it's Plasma or LCD, pricing and features will matter when the time comes.

I just bought a 42" panasonic plasma yesterday.. the guy at best buy said that plasma has been getting a bad rep for really no reason... they are cheaper and have a better picture than lcd. I looked at a model right above the one i got on display and it was a 42" lcd samsung it was $1500.00 my panny was $700. same size and everything and mine had a better picture by far... you do the math

I can see why plasma is going out. Plasma has the best picture, plasma is better for watching fast scenes in moivies, plasma has better color contrast, plasma is cheaper per square inch of picture, plasma has has the best color accuracy, plasma has better angled viewing, and plasma doesn't glare reflections half as bad as LCD. LCD has better anti-burn. Americans are stupid as a people, so they pick the one that makes NO SENSE. That's the only thing I can think of...LCDs suck.

Plasma lovers and LCD bashers: Would you buy another plasma TV now?

I love my Panasonic. Plasmas last just as long, if not longer, than LCD's. Also, burn in is no longer an issue with newer Plasmas. Plasmas get a bad rep from people who are not informed.

LCD starts to look like crap if you get anything larger than a 46" set. If you wanna go big then go plasma. I sell tv's and I look at them all day long. Plasma is the way to go.

LCDs are trash! What is is with consumers demanding garbage? I am so sick of people wanting cheap and low quality items. Plasma blows away LCD every time! Get a clue people!

panasonic has techs from pioneer working for them and they will be cornering the plasma market. good idea panasonic. i will be investing in panasonic soon. my buddy has a 4 year old pioneer, nothing to date even comes close to the beauty of this picture.

lemme see, I can buy a plasma for $300-$500 less than a comparable LCD and people are worried about how much energy plasmas use...idiotic LCDs will be replaced by LEDs in less than a year, and plasmas will still be produced...

  • 65 Posted by nopenguinnomayo on Wed Jul 8, 2009 10:32AM EDT Report Abuse

I still cant understand how people are so against the beauty of a well designed plasma. Pioneer didnt exactly give up, from what i understand Pioneer USA did amazing but the exchange to Pioneer Japan lost money so they gave up. Panasonic still has such amazing tvs and i will never buy LCD or LED for movies, no question!! PS why would it matter that the plasma is heavier? Who carries their tv arround all the time? Put it on a stand or the wall, they make things for both no matter the weight. BUY PLASMA!
