The exodus toward flat-screen TVs continues, and that's been driving prices down across the board.
But if you're looking for the real deals, plasma is where it's at for now, according to a story in the Wall Street Journal.
What's going on? Put simply, plasma is a technology on its way out. Pioneer and Vizio have already announced this year that they're exiting the market, as manufacturers continue to pour their resources into LCD technology. LCD, used widely across the consumer electronics industry in not just televisions but also computer monitors, laptops, and even cameras and cell phones, has boundless momentum. Plasma, with its higher power requirements, larger size and weight, and finicky reliability, has remained TV-centric since its invention, despite some key benefits that have given the technology something of a cult following.
Meanwhile, there are still plenty of plasmas on the market, and not just close-out models. And diligent shoppers can find exceptional deals on plasma sets: Roughly 20 percent cheaper vs. LCD sets of the same size.
The WSJ story linked above note that a 50-inch LCD will run you $1,500 on average, while a 50-inch plasma runs about $1,200. Although prices vary widely from brand to brand and depend a lot on the features you select, in general the trend follows across the industry. Drop into any big-box electronics store and you're sure to see big discounts on all the plasma sets for sale.
Naturally there's a catch: As plasma vanishes from the market, you'll have an increasing amount of trouble finding someone who can service the set if it breaks. You'll also be stuck buying a very large set if you want a plasma: The technology starts at 42 inches diagonally, and you'll probably need a friend to help you move the thing, too.
Not everyone's giving up on plasma, though: Panasonic, which has long been the extreme market share leader in the plasma category, continues to invest in the technology and just constructed a new $3 billion plant to build the screens. What, didn't they get the memo?

Have 3 Plasma's - 50" Phillip's a 42" Toshiba and a 42" LG the Phillip's is the best viewed TV I have ever owned. My 6 year old Toshiba gets a better picture than my 32" Sharp LCD in both formats HD or normal digital. I agree why pay more for less my LG was purchased at FRY's for $599 plus tax last week. What a deal for perfect clarity.
OLED will end the debate.
plasma sucks, stop living in the past -_-
I like how some people are saying that they would never buy and LCD and are waiting for LED's to come down in price. Do they realize that LED's ARE LCD's? It's an LED backlit LCD. Yes you will get more vivid colors and deeper black levels, but you are still going to get motion blur and ghosting. Plasma's give you the best all around performance hands down.
1,000,000, to 1 contrast ratio, nuff said
plamsa have a 100,000 hour life.. If you replacing it every 6 months your an idiot
LCD will never render black properly.. Breaks the laws of physics, you can't make dark from light... 3,000,000 :1 contrast ration 0.00001 ms response time and blacks as black as deep space.. Plasma owns LCD.
we have a 40" sony bravia, lcd, and it's the greatest thing ever! love the back lighting and it fits anywhere in the great-room. we avoided plasma because my brother in law has one and the picture froze and now there's a ghost on the screen...why would i ever want that???
Panasonic has always built a solid, deep contrast and very reliable product. Ever heard of Tecnics or Quasar? Look at your cheap Korean junk lcd's (Samsung, LG etc) after 3-4 years. There are what look like clouds thru the screen. Also, ever whatched any program with fast movement? There is a smear image and delay with lcd. Anyone that thinks a Korean or Chinese product is high-end really needs to get a grip. How do I know these things? I repaired them for 20 years until we sold ourselves out with all the cheap crap. Zenith, RCA, Sony, Mitsubishi, Toshiba, Panasonic, Pioneer & Hitachi is where it's at. If you want a great value, look at Sanyo or Sharp.
I upgraded from the dinosaur directly to the LED and L-O-V-E IT! The pic quality is so fantastic it almost looks fake. Out of this world.
Another article by someone who did little or no research. Plasmas don't "burn out" quickly. Plasmas handle fast motion better tha even a high end lcd. Pioneer is leaving because of the world economy- they didn't make low end units for the WalMart market. Their "elite" series plasmas are the standard that all are judged against. Weight? who cares- none of these tv's are portables lcd or otherwise
i've had my 42" Panasonic Plasma for over 4 years now... everyone that sees my Plasma says it's the best picture they've seen..i also have a 32" sony bravia... no comparison.. i'll take a plasma any day
I don't care what anybody says i picked up my first flat screen this year. and yes it is a 50" samsung PLASMA and it looks amazing. and to top it off I picked it up at Conn's for $899.00 you just can't beat.
Plasmas provide better picture quality! HANDS DOWN! Just because an LCD can provide a brighter picture, people believe it is better. Sooo mislead!
A TV is more user friendly? Who is replacing their plasma every 6 months? Please think before you speak, these comments are idiotic.
I've had my plasma (37" Sony Wega) for 6+ years with absolutely no problems. I love it! The picture quality is amazing and you can view the screen from any angle without losing quality. My husband and I recently purchased another plasma (58" Samsung). The picture is awesome and can be viewed perfectly from any angle.
Our T.V. is on for too long, so we will look at LCD's, and DLP just isn't up to par with the other formats, unless we are talking projectors. I dont need the overhead of my tv having burnt in images, plus the screen burning out, just because i fell asleep watching tv.(and no, i dont want to set a sleep timer on my tv). What about when I play my Xbox 360. Time flies when you are gaming, and that cant be good on a plasma, as one of my friends found out th hard way. Plasma looks good, but LCD looks good too. In my opinion, HD is HD, and you need to have the right programming to really enjoy your choice of Plasma, DLP, or LCD. All of the HD formats look like crap if you are not watching an HD station. Plus, how much more realistic can you get with out the tv being 3-d? A good quality product will always look good when used the right way, so why all the hype for all these different HD formats. HD is Still just HD. Can you believe how people are being charged for something that should be free? Wake up people, you are going crazy over TV's, that show the same picture as older tvs. You are going crazy, and making the ENT. business rich, because now they know they can charge you for what they call High Definition, which should be standard by the way. HD has always been here. They are just reducing the look of it and calling it standard definition. Thats crap. But in the end, they say it is about bandwith, which is sort of believable, but with all the extra channels on tv that no one watches, its hard to believe they cant just give us hd.
Just bought the new 42" Panny plasma and couldn't be happier! 899 from Best Buy!

They are both okay for bed room technology. For a real viewing experience you need a DLP front projection system with at least 120 inches diagonal.
