I came across Liz Weston's column today, outlining 10 things you should never buy used. Not surprisingly, four of the items (including camcorders, plasma TVs, and DVD players) are high-tech items. At the top of the list is something I hear all the time: Never buy a used laptop.
Is this good advice? I've heard tons of people sheepishly tell me stories of getting a great deal on a laptop from Craigslist, only to have it die one week later. Of course they checked it out in person before paying for it (in cash, natch), but a sudden problem emerged only after the seller had changed his phone number or moved out of town.
But is this the exception or the rule? All things equal, I'd prefer to buy a new laptop instead of a used one, but if the price was good enough I could be convinced to get a secondhand system. Why? Two reasons: First, if the case is not cracked, there's a good chance that it hasn't seen much terrible abuse. All you really need to avoid is a broken LCD or a damaged motherboard. The other components of the laptop, particularly the hard drive, can be easily replaced. And even a faulty LCD can be fixed in about an hour if you're reasonably handy with a screwdriver and have a replacement part. (Many "burnt out" LCDs actually require only minor parts that cost less than $30 to replace.)
Weston also goes on to note that refurbished computers sold with warranties can be a good buy, too. But note that they often cost substantially more than privately sold laptops and those warranties are usually only 90 days long... hardly comforting, and you could probably get a private seller to give you a three-month guarantee on a product, too.
In lieu of any hard data on the reliability of used laptops, I'm throwing the topic open to you readers to get your experiences. Have you bought a used laptop, especially from a private seller (not a refurb unit)? Did you get a good deal, or did you end up with a lemon?

i bought an ibook (macintosh) 4 years ago from ebay. it worked like a champ till i replaced it this year with a new macbook. of course, it is apple. even if you go pc, i think good common sense can carry you far when purchasing from an idividual.
Alwys boughe refurbished laptops about 3 now. No problems. Great buy both from Dell and IBM Sandeep
I have owned 2 laptops that were used. Both were Dell's and the name speaks for itself. The components are easily replaced. When it came time for my son to go to college you know what brand I bought for him.
I sold a used 3 GHz 17" notebook on eBay for $745.00 using PayPal to someone who broke it 20 minutes after he got it. It always worked perfectly for me. He broke the A/C input on the HP Pavilion (they are known to break with improper care.) I sold it As-is and No returns... and even with that, PayPal said he could return it with a full refund. PayPal didn't even ask me for any input! There is a risk to both buyer and seller.
I bought a used laptop on eBay last month and it is a charmer! It is a Dell Latitude, C600, which was purported to be an executive turn-in. They said it needed a power cord and possibly a new battery. I got the computer for $285, a power cord for $15, and a new battery for $50 - all on eBay. I couldn't be happier. It came with a new, still in the box, wireless connection. To those who are afraid to buy used, I say: be bold! I was not let down one little bit. They also offered an extended warranty at a reasonable rate.
Bought one off Ebay in January , Dell C610. Paid $229.00. Disclaimer stated that battery not guaranteed. The seller claims he sold 2000 of them in Dec. Well, got it, no wireless card as promised, battery was truly dead. Also, missing audio drivers, etc. Contacted seller, he mailed me a cd with drivers, took 2 weeks. Installed drivers, bought new battery and wireless card. Come to find out, the bad battery actually wasn't charging because of issue on motherboard. He hasn't returned e-mails, found out illegal copy of Windows 2000 installed and so on. To sum it up, pay the extra $, buy new. Never again and never on Ebay.
I purchased a used laptop on ebay...also purchased a two year warranty that begins after 60 days. So far, so good. Just make sure you check the seller's feedback. The screen flases on and off occasionally and sometimes the computer shuts off for no reason...I'll hold out for the warranty to kick in. Overall..I think I got a good deal.
My first 2 computers were used, from e-bay, and were absolutely great. As a matter of fact, I passed them on to others, that could not afford computers. I believe that the were corporate leased, but in any case for people that just cant afford a new one( although prices have now become so low) it's better to have "used", than none.
I purchased a used dell latatude for $300 from ebay LOVE IT. NO problems and I use it daily.
Its hard to pass up the deal you can find w/ a "factory refurbished" laptop. I recently bought an HP 8305, looked great but quickly ran into problems. By quickly I mean the first hours of ownership. The wireless adapter wasn't working and it the computer would just freeze, often. So it got sent back and the company I ordered from gave me no trouble. I've bought another HP laptop, refurbished and its working fine.
I bought a Dell laptop used, for 100 dollars, a few months later the mouse and keyboard stopped working, the cable was broke - I was able to get a replacement part to fix it for less than 5 dollars off of ebay and it's now working like a champ - have never had another problem with it. I was so happy with the used laptop I bought, that I bought another one recently for about the same price - newer and better performance. It supposedly had minor operating system issues with it, after I got it - I finished installing the op system and it works like a new one. So both of my used laptop experiences have overall been good.
Well I have bought 3 over the years 2 mac and one pc, they have all been great not one issue, the pc was off craigslist, the Ibook from ebay, and the G4 from the Mac guy's (they get either refurbs or trade ins) all been Great for me !!! Also bought at least 5 refurbed Mac desktops and all been great ! Just look at the carefully as being dropped is the most common red flag that I would say next, if they have not been dropped your chances are pretty good !
i bought a toshiba tablet (older model) for less than 500 off ebay. used not referb. works great still.
I recently bought a used HP/Compaq NC6000 from a computer refurbishing company, my first laptop....it was fully equipped with the exception of a wifi card, which I also purchased used, from eBay..Both the used laptop and Wifi card look and perform like new. I am thoroughly pleased with the performance and price, and would highly recommend buying a used laptop, from a reliable source of course...
I have purchased used laptops before and surprisingly has worked allright other then minor glitches like installing correct audio/video/keyboard/mouse etc etc.. driver, which are easily availble from the manufacturers web site. But still when you purchase used laptop make sure you do a thorogh HDD and memory test and make sure the LCD screen is not scratched or has different shades of color after being on for a few minutes.
I have bought four used laptops and never had a problem. I would have had two laptops if I had bought new ones. Each member of my family now has their own laptop to use with our wireless network. I think that is was money well spent. I got 1.4 GHz Processor and 1 GB of RAM for $500 last year. I have never spent more than $600 for a laptop. I say never buy NEW. I save $$.

As a seller of Used Equipment, I find it heartening that the overall tone here is in 'our' favor. Important points though.... Know your seller....at least do SOME checking. Know your product....DONT let a seller be your GUIDE! Know the market....new and used Ask questions. GET ANSWERS. Have faith....you may be shocked. Thanks again Christopher...truly enjoy your Feed.
I have 2 used laptops, an HP and a Dell, both bought on Craigslist. I had the sellers bring them to my job, as my coworkers know a ton about computer specs. Both have been terrific, not one problem. The HP had all accesories still new in shrinkwrap and plastic.

I build and repair PC's as a hobby and someone gave me a "broken" IBM laptop, all it needed was RAM and i've been using it for 2 years with absolutely no problems. and at this point it is about 8 years old, it even runs windows XP flawlessly! If your unsure about a used laptop purchase bring a friend whos in the business i can spot an abused model a mile away
