iPhone MMS via AT&T to launch Friday, "late morning"

By this time tomorrow, iPhone owners should at long last be zapping photos back and forth via MMS, according to an official announcement from AT&T.

A specific time for the activation of iPhone MMS wasn't given except for "late morning, Pacific Time." An iTunes update will also be required to activate the MMS feature, so be ready to sync up with your computer after lunch tomorrow when the word comes down.

Apple Insider and DSLReports have stated that the upgrade will come in stages, group by group, until everyone's phone is activated. How will you know when yours is all set to go? You'll get a text message from AT&T announcing the activation, presumably with additional instructions.

For its part, AT&T is also said to be "very nervous" about what the MMS activation will do to its already sluggish network, saying that early trials on a small number of handsets led to a surprising flood of additional traffic for which it was ill-prepared. However, AT&T has reportedly spent the summer beefing up its network, and many iPhone users report getting better signal in areas where they used to have weak coverage or none at all.

As for that other big announcement that arrived with iPhone's 3.0 software upgrade, a date for the launch of tethering service (which would let computer users use the iPhone as a modem for their computer) has still not been formally announced, only that it will arrive at a "later date." Many have been expecting this arrival to occur before the end of the year, with $30/month a commonly-rumored price for the add-on feature. At least one source is banking on a $10/month tethering plan, though that may be a hefty case of wishful thinking.

Aurgh! We wouldn't have the problem of increased traffic if the traffic was spread over more carriers! I can't say that I think AT&T deserves to have the iPhone all to itself. I'd be singing a different tune if they were able to really let the hardware do it's thing, but they have been slowing things down at every turn. I wish Apple could void it's contract with AT&T due to "not fulfilling service requirements" or something.

MMS is not a priority for me. Any news on tethering?? Carrying around two phones is a nuisance...

MMS pic messaging be d*med! How about fixing the dropped calls, no voice mail, and being kicked off the network 2-3 times a day! THANKS ATT! I am one more dropped call from kicking them to the curb and they can sue me for the cancelation fee for all i care. The phone is great but ATT SUCKS ARSE!

AT&T blows. Their service sucks and they drop calls like Redskin's drop passes. Too bad Apple blew this partnership. I would already own an iPhone except that it's not with Verizon. AT&T's greed with nickel and diming users smacks of desperation. I hope they tank once Apple gets to use other carriers.

Find it very amusing to hear people crying over this or that "issue" which all are basicly "flea ----- on a lamp shade" in the overall scope. If you really think verizon is any better go. You will be posting the same ----- about them in a few months. Ultimately we are too darn spoiled. These companies opperate like they do because we let them. Whether its phone companies, cable, banks you name it they all suck the same. Stop crying!!!!
