The blasted Nintendo Wii has been the "it" gadget since the day it was introduced... but is the party finally over?
Based on Nintendo's latest financial numbers, the Wii could be hitting its sunset years: Sales of the console are down 43 percent in the most recent six months vs. the same period last year, and Nintendo's outlook for sales for the rest of the year had to be cut 20 percent.
Profits are down about the same amount. In other words: Catastrophe.
Why aren't Wiis selling any more? The age-old complaint about the Wii rears its ugly head again: There are simply no good games for the console.
Recent months have been especially tough for the console: The best-selling games for the Wii remain the Wii Sports series and Wii Fit, both of which came out many months ago. The only major, Wii-centric title in the pipeline that has gamers excited is a new Wii version of Super Mario Bros. (pictured), due out next month.
The Wii isn't dead, of course, but the honeymoon certainly seems to be over for the once highly-coveted device. The recent price cut is likely to spur some demand through the holiday season, but the lines, squabbles, and hair-tearing over the console are undoubtedly over.
How about you: Is the Wii still on your holiday shopping radar? Or does everyone who wants a Wii already have one? And do they actually use it any more?
Our team is on it and we should have everything back to normal shortly. Please come back soon.
