Every day I'm besieged by people asking what computer, TV, or cell phone to buy... but rarely does anyone ask where they should buy the thing.
But the retailer you choose does matter. Return policies, restocking fees, service and support, and the general sales experience really do count. And of course, there's that not-so-little issue of the price you pay, which can vary widely from one store to the next.
Consumer Reports took a good look at 26 online and offline retailers in its December issue, and the results are in: Most stores, online and off, get reasonably good marks from customers. But a few outlets did rise to the top.
For general (non-manufacturer) websites, the numbers were all generally pretty good, with Amazon, Newegg, and PC Connection/MacConnection the top three outlets examined. Newegg was cited for having the best prices, while both Newegg and Amazon had high marks for selection and service. At the bottom? Best Buy (online), which scored mediocre marks on all three categories.
Apple earned Consumer Reports' highest rating and its only recommendation among six vendor-specific e-commerce websites. Despite performing badly on the price metric, it received the only above average service rating and was cited for a good selection, too. The cellar dweller: Dell, with merely average prices and service.
For walk-in stores, three rose to the top: Apple, Costco, and Micro Center. Apple got out-of-the-park scores for selection and service, and despite a rock-bottom price rating it still earned the top spot. Costco similarly got a big goose-egg for selection and service, but its aggressive prices made up for those failings. Micro Center did fairly well all around, with a top service score, good selection, and average prices. At the bottom of the list: CompUSA and Walmart.

Apple and Amazon rule!
Apple? What? I have read nothing except how bad their returns department is with your ipods! and selection? There aren't that many laptops or computers to choose from and even fewer customizable options on their computers. The only thing with good selection is their ipods. I think the only reason that apple came out on top is because it's "Apple" which just mean's it's amazing for no other reason than it's Apple! That last sentence was sarcasm. No I am not trying to bash apple just consumer reports! newegg is much better for customer service and selection than apple is!
I had just purchased a Macbook Pro at an Apple store. Because of spending that kind of money, I wanted to actually talk to someone. So I purchased it at an Apple store. I was thoroughly satisfied with their customer service, and knowledge. They did ot try to over sell me whatsoever. Even though the store is over two hours away from where I live I do attend their workshops and one to one classes. Well worth the drive.
We do not understand Costco getting a "goose egg" for service, Sure you have to carry the stuff yourself BUT if you ever have to return anything to a Costco warehouse, the returns are accepted without question and generally cheerfully. In general Costco employees, although limited in number are helpful and pleasant (and I have no working, financial or familial relations with Costco).

Amazon is always a great shopping experience. Apple online or instore is great too and the staff know their stuff. Yet I love to walk into a Best Buy rather than shop online (don't know why). As for Walmart I love going there too only when it is empty and quiet yet I find that when it comes to buying things like computers there the staff at Apple or Best Buy tend to be more informed about that kind of stuff.
