Windows Vista Not Selling So Well

I'm shocked! Shocked, I say! Windows Vista, Microsoft's second-worst operating system ever (Windows Millennium is the all time cellar dweller) isn't exactly flying off the shelves. The numbers are positively grim: Compared to Windows XP's original release, Vista sold 59 percent fewer copies in its first week. (Because Vista is so ungodly expensive, sales in dollar volume is only 32 percent lower.)

That isn't just interesting, it's shocking. Not only would those be catastrophic numbers in a normal comparison, but XP was released six years ago. Think about how many more computers (and computer users) there are on the market today. There may be a bright side for Microsoft: New PC sales are up over 2006, reflecting the well-known truism that Vista doesn't run well on older hardware. However, Microsoft earns far less for OEM copies of Windows than it does for shrinkwrapped copies.

Still, Vista is selling better today than XP was last year, which is good news for the company: Its brand-new product is outselling an ancient one that everyone already owns. Analysts are also noting that businesses seem to be buying more copies of Vista than expected, and that Vista's high price should offset the lower unit sales to consumers. Great for Microsoft. Bad for you and me.

Oh, and if you're still wondering why people aren't lining up to get their paws on Vista, check out PC World's "Most Annoying Things" about it. It's pretty much dead-on with its analysis of what's broken... and I can think of a few things I'd like to add to that list myself.

Why is anyone surprised about Vista ? Microsoft has a record of never having a product right when they first put it on the market, it takes them at least a year to ever get most of the bugs out. Microsoft has only one goal to make Bill Gates even more money. I personally won't be using Vista 1. because I'm not going to spend a few hundred dollars to upgrade my computer, and 2. I don't want to go through constant patches and hot fixes they find after the system is compromised by all the hackers. Better idea, save your money and buy a Mac, might be more expensive, but everyone I know who has one says they never have the problems PC does.

I am still running Windows 98 with great success. It does everything I NEED it to do and most of the things I WANT it to do. Windows Vista? Yeah, I remember reading about MicoSoft's "Longhorn" OS about 3 years ago. I think people just got tired of waiting and waiting for the new OS to come-out. Furthermore, as any real computer geek will tell you (or ask you), do you really want to be the one that beta tests MicroSoft's new operating system? I'll wait a yearr until Vista version 1.5.1 comes-out with all the problems solved. Nick http://www.CreditManagementWorld.com

Im glad to see that Vista did not make it. I am a beta tester and it is worse than any os I have ever seen. Dont throw your money away on a horrible operating system like Windows Vista. Everyone I talk to about it they get told not to buy it. It will force you to buy a new pc or reinstall windows xp back on it. Don't beleive me do a google search on windows vista sucks. And for you Yahoo chatters if you get vista foreget about voice chat,Yahoo messenger will not support voice chat on vista.

One of the bigger problems from what I understand is that if you do want a new machine and don't want a mac. You will have no choice but to be stuck with Billy Boys Vista junk as new machinbes will be crammed with it whether you like it or not. The alternative is to build your own if you can. Some older machines cannot be upgraded enough to use Billy Boys latest nightmare. So soon you will either buy knew new or go mac.

Buying a MAC isn't without it's problems as well... trust me I've been using that OS for a long time. What M$ hasn't figured on is they have trained the public to not buy any new OS until the first patch level comes out to fix all the bugs we will find... What is a shock (not really) that M$ has had years and years of development on this OS and I'm sure they have quality control to look over everything but still we find problems with structure (ease of use) and the underlining code. That just kills me. Vista is just priced way to high when you can run a MAC with just about all of M$ software now and with Linux being free. Yes I know nothing is really free but I've got 4 computers here at home running linux without any problems. XP SP2 and Win2003 are now stable OS's that run fine (most of the time) so I see no need to upgrade (pay more money) until Vista does something great. M$ needs to focus more on web based apps and stop overdeveloping the OS. 90% of the users that use Windows don't use 90% of the OS capabilities anyway. Google is building apps that you use on the web like all Office software so one day the OS isn't going to matter what you use just a browser and a web link.

Why mess with a good thing? I love Windows XP and don't want to switch over. Are there really that many benefits to Vista? I'm trying to buy a laptop with XP and they all come with Vista now.

Just download Ubuntu for free. Install it one the same hardware, for free - no upgrade needed. Use Synaptic to install programs, for free. Have access to a powerful command line interface and easy to use desktop UI, for free. Get support on the Web, for free. Why anybody bothers with Windows is beyond me (unless you must play your games on it, but you can just buy a PS2 and used games).

Forget Winblows, forget Macs, get Linux.

swimmer2010 I agree that Bill and Microsoft are evil, and I agree Linux or Red Hat is the way to go, but unless you enjoy veggin out on the pc in your parents basement, you gotta deal with Microsoft in the business world to make any money. It sucks but it is true. Oh yeah, my wife beta tested Vista and said she has never seen such a memory hog, it hardly ran on a 60 gig virtual pc.

i think windows xp is the best so far. I have not used Windows vista yet my new laptop has the new CPU dure core 2. By reading the comments i do not think i should get Windows Vista. I think i will stick with Windows XP it gives me what i need and it runs with out no problems. And another think is the new PC and laptops are developed with news CPU"s and more momory so that we get the newest Windows software with the computers. If XP runs good and you could use it for your work and for home i think just stick with XP if Vista really do suck.

I work for a software development company. We haven't even talked about 'upgrading' to Vista: it isn't even an option worthy of discussion. I use a Mac at work and a Mac at home - Microsoft failed me too many times and Vista is a great example.

We have four computers in our home and they all work quite well. Why in the world would I even think of upgrading? I think BG may be seeing the end to his never - ending - upward spiraling - constantly - upgrading, revenue stream. There were many good reasons to migrate to XP but I have not found a compelling reason to go to Vista. I mean come on...how much more muscle does a home computer need? My XP machines do a very good job of streaming online videos, cruising the web, keeping my books, writing my letters, etc. Do you see my point? Will the office or home user really care that they may or may not save some nanoseconds? I think not. I did notice that all the new computers sitting on the shelves all present Vista on the screens and is a reason I wouldn't be buying one of them.

daihap MS windows are pieces of shxt, if you only use it to surf the web , emails, or write documents, you may not have run into problems like I did. I am a programmer and do tons of technicial work, where complex applications like VBA, C++ software are used, it follows that all kinds of problems came up, even for window XP SP2, my pcs stalls crash, refuse to shutdown, not responding, windows error message, you name it. MS has screwed me quite badly. If in the future I have no choice to switch to window VISTA, may be because of most of the program not compatible with XP anymore, I will buy a privated copy from Hong Kong or CHina, just to make sure MS doesn't make a dime from me, and I hope they will ran out of business in 5-7 years, just for the sake of all PC users, not to be rip off and screwed by MS again.

windows vista is the worst os ever to be released by any computer manufacturer ever, ive owned a vista pc for about a month and i would rather be using a windows 95,just to start off you cant open up anything(unless its paint or something)without the computer asking for permission.i had to do this project for school when i open up Microsoft word it reads YOUR TRIAL HAS EXPIRED,so no powerpoint no word no excel.another thing try to install a printer or any other output.it will say windows vista does not soppurt driver or some bullsh!t like dat.alsoit has millions of bugs i did a virus scan and found 56 viruses in the first week.so my advice is get an xp

I build my own computers. Many times I load multiple operating systems.I have loaded xp,vista, and linux. When using my xp/ vista machine,I usually end up booting back into XP.Xp runs faster with less memeory use.Vista is a real disappointment. If you buy it do not upgrade, get a second full copy and run it as a dual boot you will be going back to xp.

Vista forces you to run 4 GB of RAM on it to make the Vista work correctly. Yet the 32 bit operating system of which VISTA is on can only see ~3GB of RAM anyway. Microsoft is given computer users a black eye with this OS. I don't want to buy expensive RAM just to run my OS. Starting seriously to thinka bout getting a MAC & adding it to my WISP network..

If it were me I would avoid Vista like the plague for about a year. Microsoft has a history of releasing their newest and greatest op systems before the major bugs are worked out. Give them some time to come out with version 2. That is what it took with every single Windows based op system they have put out since Windows 95. The first releases were a holy nightmare. Stick with XP for now...and use XP Pro. I won't even bring up what the op Sys needs to run itself.
