Why Major Flight Delays Are Getting Worse

Last week, a little ice in the air caused a few JetBlue planes to sit on the runway without taking off. By the end of the day, at least one of them had sat on the runway at Kennedy Airport for 10 hours with, and I hesitate to describe this, "toilets overflowing."

Wait a sec. This is 2007! Are we still supposed to be having issues with airplanes sitting on runways for half a day? While you might think technology would have offered up more options for communication between airplanes and airports, the opposite is actually true: The FAA discourages planes from heading back to the jetway, which causes airlines to avoid contacting anyone for help. The Wall Street Journal (by way of AZ Central) has the story. (You'll have to offer a zip code to get to the piece, but it beats paying for the WSJ's website.)

In JetBlue's case, the story of last Wednesday reads like a Shakespearean tragedy. It starts with JetBlue, which waited until 3pm to ask for help from anyone. JetBlue had managed to sneak a few planes off the ground in bad weather in previous years, and it figured it could do the same this time. No dice. Instead, planes full of passengers piled up on the tarmac, none headed anywhere. By the time the jig was up, JetBlue waited for hours to get passengers off the planes, despite the presence of empty gates at JFK.

Why are things getting so bad? I don't want to spoil all the fun of the article (there's plenty of finger-pointing), but the bottom line is that airlines have no incentive to coordinate with ground crews, and no penalty for stranding people on jets for the better part of a day. But with most airlines in or near bankruptcy (even JetBlue is fading from its glory days), who's going to push for reforms?

Still, the best solution (in my opinion) would be to require better coordination between planes and the ground, enact some basic rules (nothing insane, just some common sense) about how long a plane can sit on the runway without taking off, and develop a response for getting people off planes even if there are no gates available. Alas, change requires a lot of incentive (usually financial), and the airlines (like most big industries) have major support from the government to keep them up and running: Perhaps the best we can hope for is an open apology, like JetBlue sent to just about everyone who'd ever flown the airline.

There's some good news. Fortunately, a few airports seem to be developing responses for airline strandings, and there's even talk of legislation to prevent such atrocities from happening again (though such rules have never gotten far in the past). JetBlue seems to be taking this incident especially seriously. What would you suggest as fair rules against stranding passengers this way?

Then again, Mother Nature is never going to be cooperative no matter what we puny humans decide to do. A friend of mine spent three days in Denver's airport when it became snowed in. And you thought having to turn off your cell phone was an inconvenience...

Let me tell you my Airline Troubles.. and why i have a hard time flying American Airlines... I was flying from DFW to Denver with a connecting flight to Cheyenne Wy. my flight from DFW was late because the luggage thing was unlocked? Okay why wasnt this checked before they left the gate? We had to pull into Delta, of course If anyone has ever been to DFW you know how big that airport is..well that took awhile to get someone from American to come allll the way over there.. Finnaly was it was fixed.. we were on our way to Denver. Got to Denver, Missed my flight to Cheyenne.. Thankfully the nice people at the connecting flight were nice enough to put me on the next flight... all the while not telling my party in Cheyenne that i will be on the next flight? What if something happened to me? It was worse on my way home.. my flight from Cheyenne was 4 hours late..The plane was 4 hours late!! I understood it was the weather related.. I also realized that i had missed my flight back to Dallas... When i finally got to Denver....my A'A flight from Dallas.. LONG GONE.. another flight was sitting there at the gate.. The Snotty gate agent wouldnt even put me on the list... she basically blamed ME for the lateness! I was tired, cranky upset.. i just wanted to go home!! She basically told me the next flight was the next day and i was stuck in Denver with No hotel Vouchers or meal Vouchers!!! i had money, but not enough for a hotel room! nor could i rent a car.. like i would drive all the way from Denver to Dallas? Its not like Colorado is next door.. I went to United Airlines.. They had one flight left to Dallas..I told them the whole story and the guy took my ticket and put me on the last flight. He even walked me to the gate and made sure i was checked in. He then gave me 20 bucks, told me that Taco Bell was still opened for another hour. This is something he didnt have to do.. but he did it..American didnt even offer any help. My luggage had gone on to Dallas.. on the american airlines flight that the snotty gate agent woulnt put me on... When i landed on UNITED Airlines, i couldnt find my luggage.. a day later they found my luggage in the American gate.. but i had to come get it? they would deliver it, but there would be a charge? ( i lived 1 mile away from DFW!!) So i finally convinced them not to charge me.. I still have a hard time trusting American Airlines..If the gate agent cared enough..she wouldve done what she could to get me on the plane.. Would she like it if her own daughter had to spend the night in a strange airport with no money or food? i doubt it...

If more people knew what is involved in actually running an airline despite ATC delays, ATC reroutes, weather, maintenance, crew issues, passenger connections, runway closures,...etc - I think you would all be impressed with just how well the airlines actually do. But I guess it is a lot easier to just complain and assume that the airlines are just rude and ineffective. Especially for those of you who think they should get 5 star service for $100 ticket! Do the math. Also there was a lot more fiction than fact in that article!

After reading some of these complaints and posting one of my own, i realized how spoiled we are as a society. We expect service RIGHT NOW, never mind it might harm us. What would yall do if the decided to let that plane take off in that weather? What if the plane crashed? Yeh my idea of sitting on a plane for 10 hours is not fun. but i would be alive.. The pilots dont control the weather. The ATC doesnt control the weather, Airports with heavy traffic, What do you expect them to do? just the plane around like its a car? they leave the gate, another plane pulls in.. I attended a travel Academy for a certain Airline, and i have more respect for them. they have to make choices everyday. Tough Choices that will affect not only THIER careers, but the lives of thousands and billions of people everyday. Yes maybe the customer service may suck..but what do you expect? Imagine yourself sitting in a cubicle listening to people like YOU complain about the dumbest things that the C.A. can not change!!!! GROW UP!!

brucster_99 is correct! The goverment used to have a handle on the airlines. There used to be rules and regulations about all of the things that are being discussed here. But, a little thing called deregulation that happened about 25+ years ago put a stop to that. The airlines really have no one to answer to when it comes to these types of complaints, they can do whatever they want and customers will continue to pay the price. I say, regulate the airlines again and get some streamlining done so customers can again expect to be treated with dignity and respect while traveling via air.

The airport delays that the public don't know is the FAA has a shortage in air traffic systems specialists as the our union PASS points it out. Also jobs on airport improvements our contracted out our not do a good job, like FTI and PARSONS companies, lost communication at ATC centers and cable frozen to improper installation at 36L LOC wasn't put in right. Radar rotator joint at CVG out at same time that was replaced. We had to the worst situation to separate planes was necessary for safety of the public.

Can we wonder why most airlines are bankrupt? It's called customer service!!! It's time to re-regulate them. They do what they want, when they want. There is no one to hold them accountable. We are their captive audience. Literally. I hate to use this term in this day and age, but it's air piracy in reverse. Kidnapping!!!!

In my experience, not all the airline are bad. JAL(JAPAN AIRLINE). Their service is amazing good ! Also, DELTA airline is not bad.

You're all getting what you paid for. There's a reason those airlines are considered "low-cost". Since this industry downgraded itself to where any redneck with a food stamp can fly from NYC to LAX, things have gotten rediculous. Personally, I don't feel sorry for a single person stuck out on that tarmac...I feel bad for the crews that had to deal with them.

This is just a comment to number 16's comment: I can't drive or take a bus to where it is that I fly. Private airplanes cost an arm and a leg. Are you going to treat me??? I have to fly to Australia...what's your solution for that??? Want me to put my swimmies on and start paddling? You're a jerk. I hope you get stuck on the tarmac with a bad case of diarrhea.

And by the way sharky...number 746, I don't fly on low cost airlines. If you have to fly to Australia from the States it is never low cost. Also, last time I checked the airlines were not honoring food stamps.

If a plane must sit on the tarmac or runway combined, for any longer than 45 minutes, for inclement weather or otherwise, there should be legislation passed allowing the crew to have full authority to return the aircraft to the gate and allow the passengers to return to the terminal. No questions asked. It is the airlines responsibility to service their paying customers appropriately. If it weren't for paying airline customers, an airline couldn't get off the ground.

Interesting article, but you never gave the reason why arlines are getting worse.

  • 679 Posted by az78945 on Thu Sep 3, 2009 3:00PM EDT Report Abuse

It's all about money. As a retired airline employee, I can tell you that the airlines hate delays as much as their customers do. Cost cutting in all areas is the norm. For instance, you may have noticed that rules for carry-on bags have been much relaxed. This is because, the more luggage you carry on board, fewer low paid baggage handlers are required. Know what happens when the overhead storage compartments accidentally pop open when a bad air pocket is encountered? Think about it.

I will avoid flying on United. (At all costs) Not so much about delays and cancellations,...but rather their rudeness to the customer in general. Even when you call them up to find out what is going on, ie find out when to go pick up grandma at the airport,... They lie! Plus their treatment of people with disabilities is anything but good.

Easy way to get the plane back to the jetway after hours just sitting there......create a disturbance on the plane!
