Daily Techno-Babble offers a breathless "three reasons why Windows Vista is sinking like a rock," and while the story has a point, I don't really think that "limits on how Vista can be used under virtualization" is really the thing about Vista that is scaring away that many would-be users, nor are Microsoft's DRM provisions on high-definition video much of a big deal yet, as few users care about high-def on their PC right now. Don't get me wrong: I think all of these are factors that make Vista a poor OS, but they aren't the primary reason that it's "sinking like a rock."
Given that Vista sales seem lackluster at best, what's the hang-up? I think it's something far more simple than the reasons that DTB offers up.
So what's turning people off of Vista? Here's my take, in order of importance:
1) Price. There's no way around this one. Upgrading to Vista doesn't just mean spending up to $400 on software, but also cash on RAM and video card upgrades, or buying a new PC altogether. If Vista was a $100 upgrade that anyone could use, it'd be a top seller, I'm sure.
2) Nothing new to see here. Love the visual style, but does photo tagging and 3-D window flipping really merit an upgrade?
3) It's annoying. I don't know any Vista user who hasn't turned off User Account Control, which nags you with an "Are you sure????" prompt every time you try to do anything beyond run the calculator. Yet UAC is the linchpin of Vista's vaunted new security system. Without it, it's really no different than XP.
4) Tons of stuff is incompatible with Vista. An acquaintance of mine got a new PC with Vista preinstalled. Neither her scanner nor her printer had Vista drivers ready. Both peripherals cost several hundred bucks, and now they're essentially paperweights (though the printer, at some unforseeable time in the future, may work again). Lots of software won't run on Vista, either, but it's the hardware incompatibilities that are daunting. (Update: Looks like the scanner driver's finally ready.)
5) It's confusing. Everything that XP could do, Vista can do... only it's buried under a different menu and it has a new name. While average users probably never use many of these settings, power users have found themselves starting from scratch to relearn Windows.
6) It's busted. Try connecting to a printer on your network that's hooked up to an XP machine. Or try downloading a file with a third-party application and then accessing it via another PC on the network. I won't go into a list of the endless bugs and flaws with the design of Vista, because I don't really have to: Vista needs a Service Pack already.
That's my take, but I'd love to hear your reasons for being hesitant: Why aren't you jumping whole hog into the Vistaverse?

I agree with motelmann444's comment on NOT being able to find a MS computer WITHOUT the vista O/S preinstalled on it. Just from reviews I'm not excited about the Vista. That's not why I am buying a new computer, it has NOTHING to do with the operating system. I need a computer, now! I'm looking for a dual core, for video editing. But then again rogueist commented that the Vista O/S downgrades ALL video performances. I currently use XP PRO, love it. But our computer is 5 years old, some hardware,on the monitor and tower, pieces are broken. I also would like a flat panel WS monitor. That is why I want to buy a whole new computer bundle. Will they ever sell dual core computer bundles again?
vista sucks
I actually want to go back to XP media center because Vista slows my computer down, my graphics card fan keeps whining, my printer doesn't work, and my hard drive makes strange noises. The only thing about Vista that I like is that the graphics are pretty nice but I would trade the graphics to get performance back.
If I am going to upgrade it is going to be to another computer....and MacBookPro...otherwise I have everything I need and more on XP!!
THIS is why Apple is superior. Buy a Mac.
not to mention it's an inferior model of osx. i mean, could it be anymore of a copy-off? but guess that's what pcs have always been... inferior copies...
If you plug your apple Ipod into a vista system the ipod's hardware is scrambled and can never be used again.
My reason for not getting Vista...because I have been using a superior version of "Vista" for years now on my Mac G5...it's call OSX....PC=waste of time and money. Just buck up and get a Mac.
The thing that's upsetting to me is that I cannot hot sink my PDA (Sony Clie) to it. When I notified Sony they stated that since they no longer make that PDA, there is no intention on providing an update that would allow it to be compatible with Vista. Now my PDA is an Island Unto Itself.
Its so easy folks. Buy a MAC and be done with it.
Poor Gaming Several websites have done tests that have shown a dramatic frame rate drop with vista. Essentially the graphics drivers aren't ready yet. Essentially everyone who's using windows vista right now is beta testing. Have fun! I'll wait until at least service pack one comes out. Maybe even SP2.
Vista is like starbucks. It's bulls%it.
So why aren't people switching to Macs? Almost all of the old incompatibilities are gone, the risk of picking up a virus are nearly nonexistent, and its much, much, easier to use I'll never understand why people remain so loyal to Windows.
I am very happy with XP dont change a thing. Vista is for all the people on the left coast that have to have all the new tec stuff. Even though that they have no idea how to work the stuff or use it.
Hey I have a Pc with XP on it. My nephews have MAC's. They don't have the trouble with security issues that my copmuter has. I should have invested in a MAC. Now I suppose in a couple of years Microsoft wont support XP. Which figures, since I have so much invested already. Why not keep us forced to upgrade every two years? More money for AMD, Intel, Microsoft, Sun Systems, Adobe, etc etc.
I love Vista!
i have the new vista i like it , it has a few things to get used to but like all new things it comes around.
i just got my new computer with windows vista honestly if you know XP well enough you can figure out Vista, the changes are not that vast I just turned off the gadget bar ont he right hand side. I also enjoy being able to scroll over the toolbar when I have rpgrams shrunk and getting preview of whats happening on those screens.
I probably use 3% of the capacity of XP and I have a to work in foreign countries and need a wide compability. No upgrade in the near future for me.

Vista won't work with my V1 Media Center Extenders.. I don't think I'll be upgrading for awhile.. Here's to hoping Vista SP2 will support for V1 Media Extenders And no DRM..
