Daily Techno-Babble offers a breathless "three reasons why Windows Vista is sinking like a rock," and while the story has a point, I don't really think that "limits on how Vista can be used under virtualization" is really the thing about Vista that is scaring away that many would-be users, nor are Microsoft's DRM provisions on high-definition video much of a big deal yet, as few users care about high-def on their PC right now. Don't get me wrong: I think all of these are factors that make Vista a poor OS, but they aren't the primary reason that it's "sinking like a rock."
Given that Vista sales seem lackluster at best, what's the hang-up? I think it's something far more simple than the reasons that DTB offers up.
So what's turning people off of Vista? Here's my take, in order of importance:
1) Price. There's no way around this one. Upgrading to Vista doesn't just mean spending up to $400 on software, but also cash on RAM and video card upgrades, or buying a new PC altogether. If Vista was a $100 upgrade that anyone could use, it'd be a top seller, I'm sure.
2) Nothing new to see here. Love the visual style, but does photo tagging and 3-D window flipping really merit an upgrade?
3) It's annoying. I don't know any Vista user who hasn't turned off User Account Control, which nags you with an "Are you sure????" prompt every time you try to do anything beyond run the calculator. Yet UAC is the linchpin of Vista's vaunted new security system. Without it, it's really no different than XP.
4) Tons of stuff is incompatible with Vista. An acquaintance of mine got a new PC with Vista preinstalled. Neither her scanner nor her printer had Vista drivers ready. Both peripherals cost several hundred bucks, and now they're essentially paperweights (though the printer, at some unforseeable time in the future, may work again). Lots of software won't run on Vista, either, but it's the hardware incompatibilities that are daunting. (Update: Looks like the scanner driver's finally ready.)
5) It's confusing. Everything that XP could do, Vista can do... only it's buried under a different menu and it has a new name. While average users probably never use many of these settings, power users have found themselves starting from scratch to relearn Windows.
6) It's busted. Try connecting to a printer on your network that's hooked up to an XP machine. Or try downloading a file with a third-party application and then accessing it via another PC on the network. I won't go into a list of the endless bugs and flaws with the design of Vista, because I don't really have to: Vista needs a Service Pack already.
That's my take, but I'd love to hear your reasons for being hesitant: Why aren't you jumping whole hog into the Vistaverse?

I have a 1 1/2 Dell PC and none of my perfs will work without an upgrade or never at all!! NICE How can Mocrosoft (sp) have a $400 dollar upgrade and sock me for over $400 for new stuff. My next computer will be an Apple....
Vista is everything an at home Mac user hates about PC's. Despite the beta testing etc. MS has yet to bring a new OS to market that wasn't flawed. Mac may have the occasional misfires (iPod battery issues etc.) but when they put out a new OS, it's awesome. In the case of XP I feel lucky that it got better and now everything's caught up. I wouldn't 'upgrade' from XP unless it made coffee and gave you a backrub.
Seems to me that all they did was try to challenge the MAC on its visual affects. Also, it's not compatible with anything on Earth. I attend Mississippi State and I can't log on to wireless, ON Campus email acconts, Web CT. This means I can't do any homework, check accounts, or even get on the internet. The only plus to it is the ability to use any external memory as RAM, I agree Vista needs a major overhaul by next school year.
It took 5 years before XP was useful. XP is like a Fiero...they sucked at first and by the time it was working ok, they ended it. Microsoft wants to play to the dumbest player, but it looks like even that is failing miserably. Good luck with it...whoever intalls it...suckers. Keep your RAM and current PC and let this one go for a few years before converting by force...as MS is so famous for.
When you all think about all the bugs, fixes and SP versions that Windows XP came with, it makes you realize that XP is actually better than Vista. We all want our old XP Back!!! Micro$oft hope your taking notes this time.
Its pointless, xp works wonders Dont fix whats broken they are not about making your computer better they are about making the bigs guy's pockets even fatter.. If i was forced to buy a vista computer id run a whole new system n never come back to this compabt again
I am an employee of a HSI Company. The calls are flooding in on Troubleshooting Vista. We did not even get the troubleshooting guidelines, but a few days before the release. It has been terrible.
VISTA IS GREAT. I HAVE NEVER SEEN VISTA CRASH... EVER BUY IT NOW...
It is a problem.I just got a new pc and it came preinstalled.I'm ready to return it.I will give it a couple of days to see what happens
Let's be totally honest here. Home computers are for games and looking at pics of naked women. Anything more than that, and you can use the computer at work. Therefore, let your company's IT worry about it. All this "reliance" on home PC's (banking, taxes, home business, whatever) only makes us more vulnerable.
Microsoft's slogan "We don't care. We don't have to." And it's true. Whine, cry, complain all you want... there is really no incentive for Microsoft to respond.
hmmm sound dumb.
2 words Re-Boot! Linux rocks!
it's a dud, pure and simple
Why stay with an antiquanted system like windows? Fly free and go to an Apple. Windows is an 1980's Apple.
why am i not interested in vista? cause Mac OS X is cheaper and better. Almost every major reviewer agrees that Mac OS X Tiger still trumps even windows Vista.
I installed Vista Ultimate on my laptop and it kept getting error messages. Something about a COM file failed and needed to close. Also downloaded the latest drivers from HP but they didn't work well. Mouse would be all over the place without even touching it. Finally got so frustrated that I reinstalled XP back on it.
I have an MCSE in XP, and I'm so lost with Vista. It's not user friendly, and like the article said, you have to re-learn windows. It takes forever to do ANYTHING, and you have to keep asking the program how to do simple tasks. Last time I try something as soon as it's released.
There is no way I am downloading Vista. Even if the thought of revamping my complete hardware collection seemed in the least amount desirable, what if I don't like Vista. I can't go back with out going through online debates with customer service to revert back to XP. I bought a new laptop, Vista ready with a free Vista upgrade. No OS came with it. I have to go through restore or MS to re-configure my hard drive. It's not worth the hassle.
