An Open Letter to Microsoft: Re-Release Windows XP

Dear Mr. Gates, Mr. Ballmer, and the many good folks at Microsoft Corp.,

It's time to sober up on Windows Vista. This just isn't working out, and your users are getting frustrated to the point where they're souring on Windows altogether. In case you haven't seen some of the more noteworthy blog posts on this topic, I refer you to Chris Pirillo, Scot's Newsletter, or Spend Matters. Or check out the recent bug reports regarding product activation and security flaws. This is all stuff I managed to dredge up that was written yesterday.

People are unhappy with Vista. Really unhappy. And though I know Microsoft has its own form of Steve Jobs' reality distortion field, it certainly can't keep you from seeing at least some of the sobering sales figures and the crush of disappointing reviews of Vista. I don't want to dredge up all the reasons people are unhappy with Vista in this letter. I want to talk about what you ought to do stop a mass migration to Linux and the Mac.

You've actually been in this situation before, and not long ago. The OS was Windows Millennium Edition, which had the same fanfare as Vista and the same DOA response. But Millennium didn't kill Microsoft. In fact, few computer users probably remember it at all. Why? Because you gave them an alternative:  Windows 2000, which had come out earlier that year and which you had positioned for higher-end users. (There was only one desktop version of 2000: "Professional.") But within months, every user, whether an IT pro or a home tinkerer, was running Win2K.

This time you don't have an escape clause: You can get a new PC with Vista Home Basic, Vista Home Premium, Vista Business, or Vista Ultimate. But it's all Vista, and it's all got the same problems. Only some versions have more of them.

So here's the solution. Reintroduce Windows XP.

Think of it as what happened with New Coke. When that tanked, Coca-Cola Classic hit the shelves and it became bigger than ever. Maybe you could freshen up XP with some of Vista's visuals, but leave intact its menus and control panels, its functional networking, and its broad hardware and software support. You know, the things that people actually need to get their work done. Call it "Windows XP Reloaded" or something clever like that, and tack on $30 to the price tag for your trouble. And more importantly: Allow OEMs to install XP instead of Vista, giving new PC buyers a choice. XP is easy to come by as shrinkwrapped software, but getting it preloaded on a PC is tough. (Update: Actually I just heard from a manufacturer that they are still allowed to preinstall XP, but it seems many vendors shy away from it for fear of looking outdated... I guess encouraging them to use XP is too much to ask?)

Still, I do have some hope for Vista. It's running on one machine on my network, and I really like that Flip3D business. But its shocking lack of hardware support and aggravating bugs mean I could never use it in a production setting. Then again, by the time it's ready, you'll probably be on to the next OS. And maybe that's for the best.

Good luck.

Your running the same gam as IBM did with their 330x systems. I have worked on mainframes for 20 years and I have never seen anything like this...Remember ControlData Corporation, they fell like a rock when they did not listen to Seymor...same with Amdahl. I worked with both but politics got in the way. The reason CDC folded is Seymore wanted to improve on his 7600..He did. only 2 7700's were made but his engineers wanted to build STAR..it never ran correctly and that was 'cold war' nuclear design stuff. IF IT WORKS...LEAVE IT ALONE.

I used to run IT support for a company with a few thousand desktop systems. When I left, they were about 60% Mac and 40% XP. Why? We had survey data and budget data going back three years that said that it cost us 12 times as much to support a Windows seat as it did to support a Mac seat, AND, our Mac users were, on average, 30% more productive than our Windows usees. Fast forward a couple of years... Chatted with their IT manager last week; he was talking about the pilot programs they'd run with Vista and Office 2007. The "old" numbers - 12x and 30% more productive - are no longer valid with Vista. The new numbers, based on the pilots, are 18x and 55%. It's going to be *very* hard for even the most devoted fanboi manager to get Vista seats. Vista is going down the same path blazed by OS/2 3.0, and we all remember how gloriously successful *that* was, yes?

I was planning on buying myself a new laptop for Christmas this year, but because everything I looked at was pre-loaded with Vista, decided to postpone a new purchase. I have heard mostly bad about Vista, and I am very comfortable with Windows XP, so will sacrifice a little speed and memory.

Your letter was right on and should also post to all OEM manufacturers. Please re-release XP with a recovery disk to completely rescue us from Vista. Microsoft has not listened to users. But the OEMs are about to loose big as well. I am ready to buy a Mac after 20 years as a PC user. I must have configured a dream new Mac online 10 times by now- just not hit the purchase icon until I had some cash. But boy am I drooling and wishing as I suffer on in Vista purgatory.

as a computer tech with my own business I have not sold 1 Vista yet. Everybody that has vista has aked me to change them back to XP pro after a few months of the frustration of all the popups and trying to find their way around Vista. Microsoft person even admitted to me they are still selling more XP than vista and it is worrying them. I hope they don't do the stupid thing and stop XP altogether as they will be committing corporate suicide as some of my customers have told me they will change to Mac or linux before using Vista ever again. Weel must go as I have 3 to convert tonight again and it is making good business for me and I feel sorry for the poor customers that are buying Dell, Hp Compaq and other brands telling lies like XP is finished. I have 200 copies in stock still buying them as well so they are getting a bad name as well by telling lies to customers

further to my comment I had 2 lenovo laptops on my bench the other day brand new with no added programs and identical memory and cpu when I hit the go button on both together Vist took 15 mins longer to load that xp so if you are after faster system use XP. Vist reminds me of the old days of ME (many errors) and should go the same way as it did. Buried in the deepest hole possible

Please, please, please bring back Windows XP for laptops IN STORES. Our workplace programs are only compatible with Windows XP and I am dying to get another laptop but cannot get one in stores...XP will bring more money to you...you can keep Vista out there if you must, but bring back XP in stores so the public has a chance at being happy and you get more money in your pocket. Please listen!
