Dear Mr. Gates, Mr. Ballmer, and the many good folks at Microsoft Corp.,
It's time to sober up on Windows Vista. This just isn't working out, and your users are getting frustrated to the point where they're souring on Windows altogether. In case you haven't seen some of the more noteworthy blog posts on this topic, I refer you to Chris Pirillo, Scot's Newsletter, or Spend Matters. Or check out the recent bug reports regarding product activation and security flaws. This is all stuff I managed to dredge up that was written yesterday.
People are unhappy with Vista. Really unhappy. And though I know Microsoft has its own form of Steve Jobs' reality distortion field, it certainly can't keep you from seeing at least some of the sobering sales figures and the crush of disappointing reviews of Vista. I don't want to dredge up all the reasons people are unhappy with Vista in this letter. I want to talk about what you ought to do stop a mass migration to Linux and the Mac.
You've actually been in this situation before, and not long ago. The OS was Windows Millennium Edition, which had the same fanfare as Vista and the same DOA response. But Millennium didn't kill Microsoft. In fact, few computer users probably remember it at all. Why? Because you gave them an alternative: Windows 2000, which had come out earlier that year and which you had positioned for higher-end users. (There was only one desktop version of 2000: "Professional.") But within months, every user, whether an IT pro or a home tinkerer, was running Win2K.
This time you don't have an escape clause: You can get a new PC with Vista Home Basic, Vista Home Premium, Vista Business, or Vista Ultimate. But it's all Vista, and it's all got the same problems. Only some versions have more of them.
So here's the solution. Reintroduce Windows XP.
Think of it as what happened with New Coke. When that tanked, Coca-Cola Classic hit the shelves and it became bigger than ever. Maybe you could freshen up XP with some of Vista's visuals, but leave intact its menus and control panels, its functional networking, and its broad hardware and software support. You know, the things that people actually need to get their work done. Call it "Windows XP Reloaded" or something clever like that, and tack on $30 to the price tag for your trouble. And more importantly: Allow OEMs to install XP instead of Vista, giving new PC buyers a choice. XP is easy to come by as shrinkwrapped software, but getting it preloaded on a PC is tough. (Update: Actually I just heard from a manufacturer that they are still allowed to preinstall XP, but it seems many vendors shy away from it for fear of looking outdated... I guess encouraging them to use XP is too much to ask?)
Still, I do have some hope for Vista. It's running on one machine on my network, and I really like that Flip3D business. But its shocking lack of hardware support and aggravating bugs mean I could never use it in a production setting. Then again, by the time it's ready, you'll probably be on to the next OS. And maybe that's for the best.
Good luck.

I've come up with a solution; I'm buying a Mac.
Amen, Microsoft please listen for once!
i am waiting for the sp1 version before i upgrade
I really hope that you sent this "open letter" to Microsoft.
I agree, I think the people who buy a new computer should have a choice, XP or Vista. I'm glad I bought a new computer right before Vistas release, because I would not want to buy one if Vista was my only choice.
I got a Mac long ago and have never been happier. I feel sort of sorry for the people that are stuck on Windows.
Totally agree.. I bought a dell inspiron spending 1200 bucks and was eagerly looking for the new features of Vista.. As said it is just a mess up of menus and i need to learn windows menus all over again.. Each time I open an application, the dialog box opens up asking allow ?, sure?.. so on.. like some virus scan programs trouble you each day with popups !! I was so excited to have Vista, but now want to go back to XP..Still love it Explorer Tabs !!! but see, you get that with out Vista too..
To All The Reasonable People At Microsoft: I like Windows XP. It does everything I want/need it to do, and when something goes wrong, it's easy to get help. After reading and hearing so much about what's wrong with Vista, you couldn't get me to use it even by giving me a free copy (in hope of which I am not holding my breath). So please pay attention to what everyone here is saying: do your share in the national struggle against morbid obesity (in OS's at least) by letting Vista die a quiet death. Otherwise? Well, we're told that XP will have three more years of support; after that, to paraphrase Tom Lehrer: " '...in XP oder Macintosh, I know how to load-down, und I'm learning Lin-ese!', said Wernher von Braun."
I am just an ave. home user. I recently purchased a new PC, I like to dabble in photo things, was talked into XP MEDIA . I hate it!! I am going back to XP PRO where i never encounterd one prob. My thoughts, if it works, don't fix it.
the best reason that i see why microsoft released vista is probably because its an os that no one as yet has hacked into...plus it requires every one to do major upgrades to use it,thus more bucks in their pockets... microsoft is too stupid to realise that what they have been trying to do for years is just like makeing drugs and liquere prohibited...the more you try to prevent others from haveing access to stuff, the more they try to get it...thus the hacking/stealing of copyright... if they are smart they would make all products cheaper and more accessable so no one would have reason to do harm...
I have a friend that just recently purchased a Dell w/Vista and she hates it. She has asked me if I could help her take it off and re-install XP, however, I try to stay away from the DIY computer deals...so, needless to say, she's very unhappy, indeed.
Microsoft should have gotten out of the OS biz after Win2K and just moved to MAC X OS.Their just not very good at OS systems, not since day one. Keep the other stuff MS has assimilated and now call their own, but dump the OS it sure would save allot of uses from ID theft, many viruses, spyware, etc. This would save a heck of allot of time since thats where its all going to end up anyway..
I am absolutely not interested in messing with another OS. XP does everything I want. Some of my online services (multiple listing service) specifically and clearly stated they do NOT work with Vista. Plus I'd have to do hardware upgrades on everything I own -- for what? We are so glad XP has good networking skills. We know where to find all our tasks. There is no motivation to change anything!! Remember: if it ain't broke: don't fix it. XP really ain't broke. Oh, sure, there's security holes, but we've got lots of help to fix them -- patches, firewalls, virus scanners, and the like. We've really learned to live with that. It isn't weighing on our minds daily. XP's good enough for me. Let's leave well enough alone. Geoff Hazel Bellevue WA
Ditto!! Written on a MAC..
I telecommute for my job right now, and I know some of my students will buy nice, shiny, new computers with Vista preloaded. Since we do not teach them how to use a computer, I see trouble in my future...UNLESS you re-release XP. As for Vista...this may finally be the reason I go Mac. I hope we can all say, "hasta la", Vista.
Hi all at Microsoft I am a complete beginner to the hi tech world of computers and so decided to buy a PC with windows XP installed. It has been so easy and simple to use and understand as I use it for Emailing and Wordprocessing. I have seen Vista and although it looks great I have heard that you are having a few probs with it. I think that you should re launch XP with a few of the Vista features I mean a few! I have had very few probs with XP so I will continue to use it. Mandy Richardson, Buxton Derbyshire United Kingdom.
I do not see a point in re releasing windowsXp again when vista rocks. People there at microsoft are working over the bugs report and they normally strive to produce a better product for their customers. I would say if you are not satisfied with vista, use WindowsXp and then when microsoft releases their service pack for it, upgrade to vista. I am not saying vista does not have bugs at all, but normally you cannot produce a product which is entirely bug free. Regards Vinoth
So true! OS X ALL THE WAY!!!!! vista suxs, it's barely worth of running as a second operating sytem on my 24" imac.
Absolutely! A better, more up-to-date version of Windows XP would be more appreciated than the current Windows Vista offerings. I certainly would purchase an improved XP over a buggy Vista anyday.

Vista is trash. I have never been more frustrated trying to operate a PC, and I'm an IT professional who has seen the worst of the worst. Do not bother with this piece of junk!
