We're mere days away from the government's oh-so-wise-let's-do-it-three-weeks-early switch to Daylight Saving Time, and if you haven't heard yet, it's causing havoc with various computer systems, mobile phones, and calendar entries that people created months ago and only now are starting to realize that they may soon be incorrect when DST hits.
On your PC, adjusting for Daylight Saving (or Savings) Time means more than just tweaking your clock ahead an hour. The problem is with third-party applications and with devices that you attach to your PC and which sync with it. If one of your programs or devices doesn't know about the early switch to DST, that could throw a major wrench into things when you try to synchronize data. At worst you might be an hour late for a meeting or two over the next three weeks, but there's no reason to subject yourself to such a headache. Patch your gear now and avoid frustration come March 12.
Here's what to do, broken down by gadget.
Windows PCs. If you're running Windows XP or Vista, running the regular Windows Update patches will ensure your system is up to speed. But you'll also need patches for Outlook, if you use the program. The best place to start is Windows' DST center. Just click the link and step through the options, indicating which OS and Outlook version you use. If you have an older version of Windows (2000, 98, 95, or NT), I have a post here on patching your older PC for DST. You'll also have to patch Outlook separately. Here's the download and instructions for doing that.
Macintosh Computers. You may need more than one patch to handle DST, depending on which apps you run, but start with patching OS X to at least 10.4.8. Other updates (you will have to search for "Daylight Saving Time" to find them all) are available for earlier OSes and other programs. All patches are here. (As of November 2007, most Macs should be fully patched.)
Smart Phones. This is the real trouble, where most of the headaches will arise for people due to the aforementioned out-of-sync issues. For best results, patch your smart phone immediately after patching your computer. Still, I've read reports that even with a patch, some appointments made in the past may not be properly timed, so spot-check your phone's calendar after you run the patch to see if appointments are correct. Remember also that if you use push email from your company, it's critical that it patches the email server as well. Bug your IT guy and make sure this has been done, which any decent-sized IT department will have already completed. Here are links for the most important devices: RIM BlackBerry, Palm Treo, Windows Mobile devices.
Everything Else. TiVos have already been patched via an automatic download. Sunbird is patched in the latest release. I can't think of any other devices or programs that might require special patching (most will simply sync with your PC or via the network), but if you have an obscure calendar or PDA, try searching for the model name plus "DST," and you should turn up any available patches. Note that older gear that is no longer supported will probably not have a patch available, so you may have to set the clock forward manually this weekend then adjust accordingly in the first week of April. Don't panic.

I saw the video of why he thinks it such a good idea for day light savings time. I wish people would leave things alone. He was just a kid back when we had the farm life and people did very well. This is a real waist of our comfort. He thinks day light early makes people smile. Well I have news for him. He doesn't sound like hes thought this thru enough. Because people like the was it is being able to sleep a little longer and not change anything.
Energy Savings... that's a little hard to believe. Maybe a little on lighting but most people don't have enough natural lighting capability in rooms used that early in the morning... and the heat is on whether or not the sun is out... so I tend to agree... what EXACTLY will we be saving?
What about our VCR and DVD Disc recorder with the automatic time change to daylight saving time feature. Will the clock change automaticly or will we have to do it manually?
The thing is, is that Im sure we are all thinking globally and know saving engergy would be a good thing, but they are trying to sell it off to most people by saying how much money will be saved. When they say things like that, people expect that they will save a lot of money, which in fact the money saved will be very little for each individual but large as a whole. They should have left it at it will cut energy consumption and will be good for the earth and not brought up the money issue to get people to support it off of that basis. If there is extra money saved, some tax or something will be raised to get that savings back out of our pocket and into theirs.
I believe daylight savings time should be eliminated all together...
Answering for question posted by wongwongwong... Some newer VCR and DVD recorders MAY adjust correctly. Ones that are connected to the World Wide Web such as some of the newer TIVOs should be pushed updates automatically. But for the most part, don't count on your shows getting recorded as expected. Double check everything. Oh, and don't count on your digital watches either. They will most likely be wrong too. Congress had no business making this change. Any money they saved will be more than overcome by expenses to clean up the mess they created.
Oh come on. Let's look at the daylight savings time thing rationally. It was instituted over a century ago to increase the productivity in a work day for farmers. It would have made more sense for people to just start their day an hour earlier than to have everyone change their clocks needlessly. I would love to see this practice done away with permanently as it's simply worn out whatever usefullness that it may have had at one time.
Presumably the IRS will grant some kind of tax releif next year for the extra pain (& expense) we'll have to go through to fix a problem the government has created.
You are not bringing a smile to my face...I love another hour of day light but this is not needed for the reasons mentioned by this MAN
Daylight Savings Time is an absurd concept. If you want more daylight, get up earlier. I hate it when it is still light at 2130. Whatever is added at the end of a day is taken away at the start.
According to what I heard on the radio yesterday, Australia did this, and monitored energy useage. The result was... Nothing! No significant energy changes. Probaly since people burn light significantly outside of normal daylight hours at both ends, it all cancels out. So despite the theories and hypotheses, the data says no savings.
this might be a stupid question, but i'm confused. Do you turn the clock and hour ahead, or backwards?
I'm moving to Arizona...lol
Spring ahead, fall back... or in this case winter ahead. Set clocks one hour ahead.
Why do they move the clock ahead on our much deserved weekend? I'm all for moving the clock ahead one hour on a Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. No one is going to miss that hour then!
To "Cohaver" in Arizona, the person who posted comment #16. Even though you have no time to waste, you might want to find some time to brush up on your grammar and homophones. "Waist" is the one you put your belt around. The word for not using time wisely is "waste." Also, the correct phrase would be "we have no time", not "we got no time". I'll enjoy the extra hour of daylight, as I'm happy to live in Ohio!
For those of you who blame George Bush for this you might want to check your Constitution. Laws are enacted by the Legislative Branch, not the Executive. Also, if this bill was Bush-driven, why did those two darlings of the Left, John Murtha and Sheila Jackson-Lee vote for it?
LOL What doesn't bush get blamed for jeez
What's the difference if we turn on the lights in the morning or at night?
