We're mere days away from the government's oh-so-wise-let's-do-it-three-weeks-early switch to Daylight Saving Time, and if you haven't heard yet, it's causing havoc with various computer systems, mobile phones, and calendar entries that people created months ago and only now are starting to realize that they may soon be incorrect when DST hits.
On your PC, adjusting for Daylight Saving (or Savings) Time means more than just tweaking your clock ahead an hour. The problem is with third-party applications and with devices that you attach to your PC and which sync with it. If one of your programs or devices doesn't know about the early switch to DST, that could throw a major wrench into things when you try to synchronize data. At worst you might be an hour late for a meeting or two over the next three weeks, but there's no reason to subject yourself to such a headache. Patch your gear now and avoid frustration come March 12.
Here's what to do, broken down by gadget.
Windows PCs. If you're running Windows XP or Vista, running the regular Windows Update patches will ensure your system is up to speed. But you'll also need patches for Outlook, if you use the program. The best place to start is Windows' DST center. Just click the link and step through the options, indicating which OS and Outlook version you use. If you have an older version of Windows (2000, 98, 95, or NT), I have a post here on patching your older PC for DST. You'll also have to patch Outlook separately. Here's the download and instructions for doing that.
Macintosh Computers. You may need more than one patch to handle DST, depending on which apps you run, but start with patching OS X to at least 10.4.8. Other updates (you will have to search for "Daylight Saving Time" to find them all) are available for earlier OSes and other programs. All patches are here. (As of November 2007, most Macs should be fully patched.)
Smart Phones. This is the real trouble, where most of the headaches will arise for people due to the aforementioned out-of-sync issues. For best results, patch your smart phone immediately after patching your computer. Still, I've read reports that even with a patch, some appointments made in the past may not be properly timed, so spot-check your phone's calendar after you run the patch to see if appointments are correct. Remember also that if you use push email from your company, it's critical that it patches the email server as well. Bug your IT guy and make sure this has been done, which any decent-sized IT department will have already completed. Here are links for the most important devices: RIM BlackBerry, Palm Treo, Windows Mobile devices.
Everything Else. TiVos have already been patched via an automatic download. Sunbird is patched in the latest release. I can't think of any other devices or programs that might require special patching (most will simply sync with your PC or via the network), but if you have an obscure calendar or PDA, try searching for the model name plus "DST," and you should turn up any available patches. Note that older gear that is no longer supported will probably not have a patch available, so you may have to set the clock forward manually this weekend then adjust accordingly in the first week of April. Don't panic.

please!!lets save time, don't worry about the "warm"up of the atmosphere. Get real! Get serious about weening us off of oil, coal, and other things warming up the atmosphere. Save people and energy, not day light.
I don't remember voting on this time change, guess I missed that election. Now I just hope I can figure out how to adjust everything without messing up too bad. I am old, but I will figure all this out and not miss a beat, just like the panic of 2000. This had to go thru channels, so it is not just a Bush decision, lets just say,Big Brother is messing with us again!!!
The only thing I can see changing the time does is. We all have to spend more time on Sunday changing all of our time pieces in the house and car and place of business. Give me a break.
Daylight savings time is about production. The earlier you come to work, the more work you put out. Therefore the more the company makes. The wealthier the CEO's become. The bottom line is MONEY!!
Hey, gruec (#76). Are you aware that smoking funny cigarettes is hazardous to your health? There are valid arguments on both sides of this issue. Personally I think the change is a mistake but I also believe that all of those who voted on this issue, for or against, thought they were doing the right thing for the country. And that's not something I'd say about most of their votes.
I think it's funny how much time people have on their hands to complain about something so insignificant as DST. Most provinces up here in Canada followed the US in this venture, but that is no big suprise since we follow you almost anywhere. If we diddn't, there would be alot of problems with the trade between our two countries. There are more important things to complain about than changing the clocks on all of the gagets that we use.
I'll go on this Daylight savings time as schedualed on the 1st Sunday in April which is April 1st this year and not before. This is rubbish!
It makes absolutely no sense to me that people would or could save lots of money because of the earlier time changes. We are changing our clocks, not the rotation of the Earth itself. The temperature will still be cold during the day until the Earth shifts back to summer. Our clocks have no effect on energy savings unless you are fortunate enough to own a home with an energy star rated heating system and completely updated insulation. Which I am not fortunate enough to have so I will be saving no money thank you.
The "Comment #1" person is very appropriately named, Sillygal. The modified DST is in fact an energy saver. Just look at the lights "On" lights "Off" situation versus the DST clock. I invite phamp000 of Comment #5 to get out the grade school math book and do the arithmetic. Perhaps phamp000 can answer his or her own question on what he or she is missing.
Perhaps the easiest solution to this time change issue is perhaps a recalculation of the suns position at the prime meridian on the longest day of the year. Once an exact mid measurement of that day is calculated, set the clocks at 12 noon. Time changes worldwide according to established time zones can then be set and then just leave it at that, no more spring forward or fall back. As far as energy savings go, this will always be up to the people that use it, whether it be gas, oil, hydro or any other source. Energy conservations can also be achieved through the use of photo-sensitive lighting by all establishments including the home.
yo wat up??
hello out there
did anybody hear that Hawaii, Arizona and a bunch others are not on this "spring-forward" program!!
I Myself feel that beachbum has a point. This early one created havoc with My computer all day yesterday but today everything is working even better
That's just like are goverment, doing something before they really check into it. Does any one know when the real daylight savings time is?
Daylight savings time sucks and should be discontinued! The clocks should be left alone. Only a few states do it and why oh why does ours??
My Nextel Motorola i560 didn't revert back an hour at 2am like my cable tv and computer any ideas why?
There are noe real energy "savings" this incompetent administration is trying to say it is saving energy in the wake of extreme spikes in the cost of energy, but it is a null benefit. Staying lighter longer means they extra hour or so of daylight where people don't use as much light is voided after they run light for an extra hour in the morning when it is dark. What idiotic group came up with this??? Oh what, the Bu$h administration, nevermind......
Whats the reason we have it none other than big business of course, they want more profit & its easier to achieve in natural lighting.

Isn't this great. I don't have to turn my lights on as early in the evening. Now I have to turn them on in the morning to get dressed. So know instead of just a living room light I have the Kitchen light on while I fix my coffee and pack a lunch, my bedroom light on while I get dressed and the Bathroom light on while I shower. # light instead of 1. Makes sense to me.
