Wii Conspiracy Roundup

The Nintendo Wii was released on November 19, 2006, nearly four months ago. Got one yet? Of course you don't. And don't go looking for one, either. Unless you've got an insider at a gaming store or the tenacity to call one every day to inquire about their next shipment, you're not going to get one soon.

Yet the Wii is a gaming phenomenon and, unlike the Playstation 3, includes no technology of note that hasn't been around for many years.

So why aren't we soaking in Wiis? Have a look at some of the conspiracy theories on the Internet, strictly for your amusement:

First there's the obvious, that Nintendo is artificially keeping supply low in order to keep demand high throughout 2007. That would make sense if Nintendo was charging higher prices now. But it isn't, and so it's losing out on millions every week by failing to fulfill demand and possibly losing sales to other consoles.

Also popular: Big box retailers are hoarding them for big sale days. The idea is that if they advertise Wiis on the weekend, they'll get big traffic on those days and sell lots of paper towels and Pokemon junk (specifically mentioned are Target and Toys R Us). I can't speak to this, but it sounds plausible at least.

On the more absurd side: A variety of lawsuits have stopped Nintendo from producing more consoles. Ok, except it is still producing consoles, just not enough for everyone.

A game store employee offered this to one Yahoo! Tech shopper: "Nintendo is at the end of its fiscal year so they aren't sending them out." Well, he said "physical year," but we know what he meant. And unfortunately, that argument is inane. When companies get near the end of a fiscal year, they invariably try to sell more, not less, as it makes the numbers look better.

And of course, A-list NBA players have all the consoles. Even B-list players can't get them.

And here's an interesting twist: Independent Wii developers can't even get hardware, as Wii publishers have taken all the consoles.

What's the truth? Well, it should be obvious, if you've ever bought a game console in the past: Gaming companies are notorious for mismanaging their launches by not having enough product on hand for release, and being unable to fulfill demand for months at a time. The Xbox 360 was tough to get for close to a year, if you'll recall, and like the Wii it doesn't feature any outrageously next-gen technology.

What can you do to get one? Be patient. Shop on eBay or Craigslist if you're desperate. And make friends with someone at a store that sells Wii hardware so you can get in line early the day they come in. Or just do what I do: Enjoy your PS2 and 360 for the time being.

Sorry for the earlier "17 million by March" error: That referred to software titles, not hardware. Actually, Nintendo has said it plans to have 6 million hardware units sold by the end of March.

I work for Target, and all the stores are required to hold all Wii's shipped until they appear in a weekend ad. We always sell the entire stock at 8am on Sunday morning, when the ad is mailed out.

How about the fact that no matter how many Nintendo had made, boxed up, ready to be shipped out, every one of them had to be opened and repackaged with a new Wii Remote when people started the law suits because they can't hold a Remote. The fact of the matter is Nintendo had to make new Remotes for everyone who asked for one, as well as delay shipments on all consoles until the recalls were complete. For more proof, look at the Wii Play. It was shipped out weeks after its original ship date because every Wii Play came with a Wii Remote. This, combined with the unbelievable post-release demand (which is mostly parents who think their kids will "exercise" with the Wii, instead of sending their kids out to a baseball team or a ballet class) is the reason no one can find a console right now. And for all of you out there thinking of paying double on EBay, trust me, don't. Before the end of the summer they will be overstocked at every EB and Gamestop, just like the 360 was, and just like the PS3 is right now. But if you're just trying to find one so your kids will get off the couch, remember, it's still a video game console. Do yourselves a favor and get your kid a basketball hoop, at least then they can't break a $250 electronic device, and they might get some real exercise.

I work at a game store. I'm going to leave the name out simply because I don't want people calling my store more for WII's than they already have. It's a headache. My question is: Has anyone even thought about the fact that its launch time of the WII's for Europe, and that possibly they're holding them for that? Even with a shortage of them, they needed to save SOME for Europe. Juuuuust wondering, or maybe its just me rambling in the early hours of the morning.

The big name brand stores such as target and toys r us HAVE to hoard them for weeks when they have the item featured in the add. The reason for this is that its false advertising if they advertise it and dont have it on the day the add starts. They cant give rain checks becaue thatd be impossible.... My mom is a Target Big Shot..... Heres the best advice... Check the adds on saturday night... if target has the Wii in the add.... they probally have about 10-40 of them.... get in line at 6 or 630.... they hand out line tickets at 7

I think that Nintendo are not selling enough wii's, is because they are trying to make it seem that people must really like this system so the people will try harder to buy the conssole if you know what i mean.

I live in the Dominican Republic and in December of last year I went to Miami, Fl on a bussiness trip and tried to get a couple of wii for mi kid and my boss's son, but it was impossible. Two days after I got back from Miami, I found about 50 units in a local hardware store, but the price was about 17,000.00 dominican pesos (the equivalent of US$ 515.00 at the actual exchange rate os about RD$33 to US$ 1) I even got the unit at a lower price (About US$501.15) since my company is an utilities contractos and we have our contractor's discount. Bottom Line on the wii conspiracy theory: Speculation. That means getting rich on other peoples need for stuff. Some one in the supply chain for this consoles is speculating with the units they get by re routing them to other markets were they are always available, and selling them over the internet through store fronts in order to cloak the operation, but with a higher price and there fore, more profits. You can find those store fronts in places like ebay, amazon, etc., and they have always had units available to seel, but of course about twice the cost. You can easily find units a Amazon Marketplace, but at around US$400, or combos that go for US$600.00, so forget the US$250 around price tag. Get ready to pay more to make another guy richer because of your craving need for the coolets game console yet. Sorry guys, that's capitalism over the internet. And is not unlawfull to get rich this way. No price control, only the market decides the price. Were is the failure? Nintendo or someone should investigate were the Supply Chain breaks and HOW those market place folks get their hands on the units they sell over the net.

t my former store we have had shipments of 50-80 wii's sitting in the stockroom for more than a week, meanwhile we tell the "guests" on the floor that we are "sold out". Target is full of such lies, thus I no longer work there...but no worries, I already have my Wii!

I love my wii it is so fun. Oh and of course ebay has plenty. I have seen several retailers with them online like Sears, gamestop and K&B toys. You can also check out Wiitracker.com.

Well for anyone who lives around New York city... The Nintendo World Store in rockefeller center sells Wii's every morning, and they actually manage to sell a pretty big amount. Be prepeared for a bit of a line before they open though at 9am. This past Tuesday to Thursday they almost had enough to last them until they closed at 8pm!

Any one wants a Wii or PS3 or 360, they have lots of them, in these small poor rural areas, like I live in. I have been to all three walmarts in the area and all of them still have a good lot, of all three systems. If not some of the same ones from when they first got them in stalk. (360's with dust on them) My GF has a Wii, she got it for X-mas. Truth is, most people are to poor in areas such as this, so the stores, hold them for years at a time. So if you really want one of these game systems, find a poor town. Go there and buy it. You may spend about $50 in gas to get to a place like this, if you live far away, but in the long run, its alot cheaper then going to eBay. Peace out!
