The Nintendo Wii was released on November 19, 2006, nearly four months ago. Got one yet? Of course you don't. And don't go looking for one, either. Unless you've got an insider at a gaming store or the tenacity to call one every day to inquire about their next shipment, you're not going to get one soon.
Yet the Wii is a gaming phenomenon and, unlike the Playstation 3, includes no technology of note that hasn't been around for many years.
So why aren't we soaking in Wiis? Have a look at some of the conspiracy theories on the Internet, strictly for your amusement:
First there's the obvious, that Nintendo is artificially keeping supply low in order to keep demand high throughout 2007. That would make sense if Nintendo was charging higher prices now. But it isn't, and so it's losing out on millions every week by failing to fulfill demand and possibly losing sales to other consoles.
Also popular: Big box retailers are hoarding them for big sale days. The idea is that if they advertise Wiis on the weekend, they'll get big traffic on those days and sell lots of paper towels and Pokemon junk (specifically mentioned are Target and Toys R Us). I can't speak to this, but it sounds plausible at least.
On the more absurd side: A variety of lawsuits have stopped Nintendo from producing more consoles. Ok, except it is still producing consoles, just not enough for everyone.
A game store employee offered this to one Yahoo! Tech shopper: "Nintendo is at the end of its fiscal year so they aren't sending them out." Well, he said "physical year," but we know what he meant. And unfortunately, that argument is inane. When companies get near the end of a fiscal year, they invariably try to sell more, not less, as it makes the numbers look better.
And of course, A-list NBA players have all the consoles. Even B-list players can't get them.
And here's an interesting twist: Independent Wii developers can't even get hardware, as Wii publishers have taken all the consoles.
What's the truth? Well, it should be obvious, if you've ever bought a game console in the past: Gaming companies are notorious for mismanaging their launches by not having enough product on hand for release, and being unable to fulfill demand for months at a time. The Xbox 360 was tough to get for close to a year, if you'll recall, and like the Wii it doesn't feature any outrageously next-gen technology.
What can you do to get one? Be patient. Shop on eBay or Craigslist if you're desperate. And make friends with someone at a store that sells Wii hardware so you can get in line early the day they come in. Or just do what I do: Enjoy your PS2 and 360 for the time being.
Sorry for the earlier "17 million by March" error: That referred to software titles, not hardware. Actually, Nintendo has said it plans to have 6 million hardware units sold by the end of March.

Firstly, although perhaps I'm simply misinterpreting the tone, I find the credibility of an article in question when the writer assumes a generalization to be absolute. I must be the exception to the rule, as I had zero trouble getting one. I was in and out of Toys R Us in about an hour, and that was about two weeks after launch day. Furthermore Electronics Boutique had at least three out on the floor for sale today in our mall, and there was at least one left when I left for home six hours later. And that was simply what I could see from the sales floor. So at least two other consumers have also become exceptions to the rule. Looking at the conspiracy theories here and on message boards, etc., I think it's getting just a little out of hand, and some of these responses are sadly not well founded. For example, the comments about being sued for "False Advertising." I work in retail for a department store, and we have plenty of items that are in our circular that we don't specifically carry in our store (and thusly can't sell it) and we can't get sued for false advertising because of one little line in the fine print of the advertisement: "Availability may vary by store." And that's in the Wal-Mart and Target and every other legally intelligent store's circulars too in their own special wording. That's why that part of the conspiracy holds little clout. What might, however, is holding onto a couple dozen for big sales to attract customers. That's a good business tactic (albeit a little dirty, if you will) and it just may be true. It's sneaky, but it's naive to assume no one does it. hugemcseamus' comments hold some merit. A number of packages that held the alleged faulty Wiimotes had to be recalled and repackaged with the newer, stronger cords in response to their, again, alleged frail nature (whether or not the breaking of the cords is related to players' inability to control themselves is up for debate). It may not be solely responsible for the shortage, but it does play a part in delays.
I work in the target electronics department and know for a fact that they send the wii's to us on tuesday or wednesday but we're not allowed to sell them until sunday when the new ad comes out. i still average at least 10 calls a night from people checking to see when were getting them in and its usually differnet people. our store hasnt gotten any since mid-Febuary so who knows whats going on, we were getting them every other week for a while.
i work for target as well and we do tend to save our shipments of wiis for sunday ad. we do tell people we do expect them on sunday...
or if you cant get that coveted WII and are starting to have or WII-morse about the whole thing, just get a game cube & start playing super smash brothers, paper mario or legend of zelda collectors edition- you will forget all about that danged WII, or XBox or PS whatever.Game Cube disks will play on the WII,WHENEVER the mere mortals can lay their hands on one. Of course theres the DS with Metroid pinball, Izuna unempoyed ninja, plus the DS plays GBA carts, and theres thousands of GBA carts.NEED I SAY MORE??? And by the way, please let Nintendo know that they need not discontinue the Game Cube before WE(WII?) ALL have a fair crack at their much vaunted, never available WII.thus spake the old hippie chick
Here's a useful site to help trackdown wii http://wiitracker.com/. There are numerous sites that also offer similar service (wii.yahoo.com).
I work in the stockroom at my local target, during the day. I can tell you all right now, Target hoards their wii shipments purposely so they can put big sellers out for their weekend sales. They did this during christmass with the tickle me Elmos too. We had the most wii's in the district here in california after the initial launch, but we were only allowed to put out 2 a day. I hear toys r us and wallmart do the same. But hey, if anyone wants a uselss ps3......we have tons of those just sitting there! lol
YES I DO HAVE A Wii. I GOT ONE AFTER CHRISTMAS . AND YES I HAD AN INSIDER AT MY LOCAL GAMING STORE. THANKS TO HIM HE HELD ONE FOR ME.DARLA
I had no problum getting a Wii. As a matter of fact I got my Wii around Christmas and still had no problum getting one.
Yeah, you could be patient or make a friend... or you could be lucky like me and just happen to stop by your local videogame store right after they get their Wii shipment in. I've had mine since the end of winter break. :)
I used to call around looking for 2 for my boyfriend and I alot of stores said wait until jan. or feb. So I said okay looks like I have no choice but to wait. But one weekend I went to a walmart in Jersey with my dad and i love the gaming section so i went to peak. A girl walked in front of me and said i want that and that. So i looked down and saw 3 wii boxes and i almost fell over. I ran to get my dad to make sure I wasnt tripping. I wasnt so i brought two. Maybe the company knows what they are doing maybe they dont but you can't FORCE them to ship out a certain amount of consoles. So just be patient even though it may be hard the biggest upset is when you get your hopes up just let one come to you.
I have a WII and love it. I was persistant and kept looking at the local stores. I got mine at Walmart for the standard $250 bucks. After I bought mine I saw them at the mall (Gamestop) and lots displayed for sale at Blockbuster. It is well worth the cash I just wish there were more games available.
I got one at KMART due to a fair list made in order and they called me when it came in and I bought it. the manager gave me until the close of buisness the day it arrived.
The big box stores ARE hoarding them for their flyer sales. I tried to get one for my son from Walmart in early December of 2006. I had gone on wiifinder.com and was shown on a map that our area Walmart had at least six of them in inventory. They were right. After being told by a couple of sales people that they didn't have any, I found a helpful employee who keyed in the product number and did see that they had them in the stockroom. A department manager told the employee that they couldn't sell them - they were for the weekend's flyer sale. I asked to speak to the store manager who told me that his hands were tied and that store would be fined if he sold me one, but that I could get up at 4:30 AM and wait outside on line like everyone else. I live in Maine...it's too cold to wait outside in December...especially knowing that only the first six in line would get them! I told him he lost a customer. The story does have a happy ending...for my son...I spent $450 for one, with Zelda included, on ebay. Wiifinder.com showed me on a map where they were located and I just followed the link to the local ebay auction.
Cuplacaiazzas... Eureka, I do believe you've got it... I total agree; the Japanese are notorious for instilling the family environment into their respective corporate cultures. Historically, being an employee with a company was a life-long commitment from both the employee and EMPLOYER perspective. Admittedly this propensity has began to change of the past 10 - 15 years and the Japanese are starting to change into a more Western business paradigm (unfortunate for them), with employees starting to unionize and business loosening the employee for life thought process, but no doubt old habits are hard to kick, especially with a culture so ingrained in it's historical background. Having said all this, I totally, agree that keeping the production stable is probably more important than making a big hit now. Why nopt the saem issue with the PS3, well, they are after all produced by Sony and likely have the ability to shift work forces to other divisions or shift other division's work to Play Station Division or however they are structures. An the same could be said for the X-Box... It is Microsoft and it is also here in the Good old US of A, where the demigods of the Western corporate executive strata don't have near the loyalty to their employee base as our friends in the Far East Once again, cupacaiazzas - good thought, I probably wouldn't have thunk it up myself if you hadn't mentioned it. Thanks.
I got mine on ebay and it was worth EVERY penny!! We play it every day and my pre-teen daughter actually likes hanging out with mom now lol
From my understanding, Target gets most amount of shipments out of any another retailer. I bought mine from a Target retail store a couple weeks. However, I was pretty lucky. A guy had a ticket on it, but didnt pick it up in time. ..Longest 15min wait of my life :p It was worth it though. The whole family enjoys the console. Thats something I could never say for the others.
Yeah, I work for Target, in the electronics dept., and I know for a fact we horde Wii's. So that they can be a big seller on Sunday. I'm against it.. but I can't do anything
y'know all you playstation fans ever do is rag on other compony's, bug deal, you couldn't get a wii that you wanted, that doesn't mean that you can say it's crap. also, i havn't heard any nintendo fan talk about how much a ps3 is crap, and i dont brag about having a wii, we dont rag on you, so leave us alone.
I don't know why it is so hard for all of you to get Wii's I work at Target and we almost always have at least one or two in stock. I bought mine at a different Target withot calling ahead or anything. I just walked in and walked out with a Wii.
