I tend to make my gadget purchase on the spur of the moment: I have to have a new A/V receiver, so (after researching to figure out what model I want), I fire up Amazon and buy it on the spot. Alas, I'm probably paying more than I ought to. With a little patience and some common sense, I could be making smarter purchases by timing them properly.

I buy tons of gadgets, and there's a lot more to finding the best deal that the price tag. Waiting is definitely important, but timing your gadget buys is even more important than that. But, don't wait until the last minute before you actually need gadgets(i.e. camera for vacation, computer for college, gifts for holidays or birthdays) otherwise you might get stuck with limited selection, lack of stock or outrageous shipping fees. Try to plan your buys, but don't overplan.Your time isn't free!
How about telling me something I don't know.

While I agree that it's wise to comparison shop, trying to buy frugally online can be frustrating, time consuming and, ultimately, more expensive than you think. Amazon, Buy.com and PCConnection are all known and well respected companies. Yes, they mark their pricing up a bit more than they have to. But, you're paying for not only the product, but the reputation of the company and piece of mind knowing the product will arrive and in good condition. When you compare with Froogle, shopping.com or Nextag, you may be able to find a really great price at some podunk mom-and-pop startup... and usually that's what you find. So, you might find the lowest price to be from worldscheapestappliances.com. What satisfaction will you have if that device arrives DOA and you need to get it replaced? When you buy online, you're looking for not only the best price, but a respected company who has a good name for mail order goods, reasonable shipping prices and a good policy for returns. It is most definitely worth paying a little bit more money to get piece of mind knowing you won't have a hassle if you need to return the item (for whatever reason). This is especially true of large and heavy items (like HDTVs) that require freight. Also, make sure you read their return policies very carefully when buying from a mom-and-pop. Many may charge restocking fees or stick you with more shipping fees. Some of these companies may do perfect getting the item to you, but you may not even be able to reach the company on the phone if you wish to return the item for refund. Others may take over a month to ship an item that Amazon would have had to you in a week. So, the cheapest pricing isn't always the best value. You may end up with a lot more headaches just to save an extra few bucks.
