There's a lot of skepticism on the net over whether Silverbrook's claim is true or if this is all an elaborate hoax, but allegedly, this obscure company has developed technology that can print text at a rate of 60 pages per minute or photos at about half that rate. Considering most photo printers today take several minutes to do one page, that could be a major breakthrough. Texyt has videos of the printer in action, but there's always the possibility that this thing has been completely staged. In other words: Don't invest in the company (or anything) just because you saw this story... but definitely keep an eye on this space for further details.

If it's true, this is phenomenal. And the company says this isn't ultra-expensive technology; printers could ultimately cost $200 or less and arrive by the end of 2007. Sounds good so far. What's the catch? Silverbrook wants to license the technology to someone else, not make its own printers. And who knows if HP or Canon would really commercialize it. Such industry-busting technologies have a strange habit of being buried from time to time. Still, I probably wouldn't invest in a new inkjet printer today, in the hopes that it does pan out.

Of course, I thought this was impressive until I read this story about a printer capable of spewing out 1,000 pages per minute or more. Now that's fast!

I would be very interested in a product that would produce these results at a price under $200 provided this is the rate for color.
