Hands On Review: LG Chocolate VX8500

If people love anything more than gadgets, it's candy, so naming a cell phone "Chocolate" seems like a wise thing to do. And while this cell phone from LG is certainly compelling and unique, it's got a long way to go before it succeeds at what it's trying to do: Replace both your existing phone and your MP3 player.

The Good: Cell Phone Meets iPod

Let's start with the good: The LG Chocolate concept is flat-out cool. The phone is a slider model. Just flip the front of the handset up and the screen slides toward the top of the device, revealing the standard 12-key keypad down below. But the top of the phone is where the magic happens: Instead of the usual bunch of cell phone buttons there's a wheel that's uncannily similar to the one on the Apple iPod. Additional buttons surround the wheel at each corner. Although none of these are actual buttons: Rather, they're actually touch-sensitive parts of the phone itself. Just glide your hand over the appropriate corner to activate that function. The wheel is also not like the iPod's, despite its iPod look: You don't drag your finger around it but rather just hit one of the four labelled segments of the wheel as if they were regular buttons to push.

Touch Sensitive Gets Tricky

Unfortunately, the numeric keypad design and standard soft buttons of the cell phone world have long been well understood by millions of users of these devices. Muck with the interface and it starts to get confusing. How confusing? The Chocolate borders on baffling any time you try to do anything more complicated than making a simple phone call. (And even that can be tricky, since the "end call" button is tiny and placed on the side of the unit. I found it easier just to physically slide the phone shut to end a call.)

Having all these touch-sensitive buttons is also problematic if you, say, ever want to touch your phone without it going haywire. Yes, the phone automatically locks itself after a short period of idling, but even while you're actively using the phone to browse for new music, take a photo, or perform other tasks, it's far too easy to brush against one of the touch-sensitive areas, causing a random button press. (You can change the sensitivity level to your liking, though this doesn't help if your palm jams up against one of the buttons on the phone.) Fundamentally, touch sensitivity just doesn't work on a device like this, and a return to old-fashioned buttons that require firmer buttons pushes with tactile feedback just makes better sense.

Other complaints: It doesn't help that the software interface is confusing and needs a lot of work. You can also expect long delays while you wait for menus to load, though this is partly Verizon's fault, too. And here's a final point: The Chocolate is one of few phones I've ever actually had freeze on me during use. While connecting to the VCast music service, the Chocolate siezed up completely, and I had to remove and replace the battery to get it back to operating condition.

The Music's Not Bad

Now let's not forget that the Chocolate is intended as a music phone, so how well does it play music? About as well as any other phone, unfortunately. I actually greatly prefer the music abilities of LG's own FUSIC handset, and it's far less confusing to actually use. The Motorola SLVR, while imperfect, also works better in this regard thanks to the iTunes interface. On the plus side, audio sounds crisp and clear, and once you get the hang of the interface, browsing the Verizon site for new songs is fairly simple, though at $2 a pop, I don't know how much people will be buying. There's 68MB of usable memory on the phone for you to store songs on; MP3 and WMA files are accepted along with downloaded V Cast tunes. Not bad, but most users will want to use a microSD card for additional storage. The phone accepts cards up to 2GB in size. (No card is included, however.)

Other features are hit and miss. The camera (a 1.3-megapixel model) is average, and the Chocolate has no speakerphone, which is baffling because it has a very large speaker. (Contrary to some user comments, the Chocolate categorically does not include a speakerphone.)

Bluetooth is included, but the three hours of talk time (based on my tests) is very weak.

Good Thing It's Cheap

There is one kicker, however: After rebates you can get this phone for a mere $75, much cheaper than the SLVR. At this price, it might be worth checking out to see if you can live with its interface flaws. Though, to be honest, I doubt I would ever be able to. (UPDATE: For those looking for the $75 price for the phone, it appears to no longer be available. Click here to see the LG's product listing (which still says $74.99), then click on the Wirefly logo. It will take you to the Wirefly page, where the current price has been updated to $99.99. Sorry about that, but pricing can change at any moment.)

Note: This review has been updated to clarify several points. My complaints regarding the end button have been reworded, and my complaint about accidental button presses has been expanded and clarified. I have also removed my original complaint about the back button not working; I've been unable to replicate this problem, which was likely due to a button sensitivity setting. The pricing for the phone has been updated in greater detail (and has changed since the review was originally written). I have also added new comments about the phone crashing and its available memory. Thanks to all the commenters (at least the non-profane ones) for helping to improve the coverage of this product.

glad i read this review...i had wanted the sliver at first, but of course when I saw the chocolate (and being female, the name alone attracted me to the phone!), i wanted that one...looks like im sold on the sliver again:-)

I was going to get the sliver as well But saw the ad for the chocolate. First off it plays MY MP3s which means I don't have to download any crap songs from the Verizon site. I've got plenty of my dance music on my comp that I would not need to buy the kiddy pop crap that's on every radio and mtv station. With 2gb expandable memory I can have all the songs or videos that I want to have on the phone. As far as the touch sensitive screen well there's a back button on it. you can use that at anytime. Further you can either end the call by sliding the phone or hitting the "END" button on the side of the phone. The picture and video quality is fantastic. I don't have any complaints on this phone. And lets not forget it's on the Verizon network. I was a AT&T/Cingular customer, Thank God I switch to Verizon and thank God they have the Chocolate, though I prefer the European name: The Black Label Series instead. Overall a great phone once you get use to the touch sensitivity of the face!

as posted by astrohacking I have also have a sony walkman the W600I. and let me tell you it has 256mb on the phone. Very sweet. I run opera mini on it to seurf the net and see all web pages in full. But alas I now have a the nokia 6682 also sweet but I still love my W600I. As for Lg's in general they have the worst products out of all the cell phone companies.... they should just stop putting out faulty junk.

Personally I think the Samsung version of this phone (SGH-T809 or something to that effect) is amazing. I've had it for 9 months and I love it. It has many of the same features as the chocolate without the problems (including 1.3M pixel cam and mp3 player). The design looks almost identical to me. I think it may be a little steeper when it comes to price but it's worth it. I've only had cell phones that were unreliable and there just to call people and send text messages. This phone, however, is the best phone ever. But I've never been a big fan of chocolate...

I like my cell phones a little simpler. I recently purchased the LGVX8300 and I love it. You can also get it for free if you go to MuchoGeek.com. The phone is worth looking into if only to compare it with what ever you were interested in buying.

Blah, blah, blah, hardline phones 'home phones', 'pay phones', and cd/radio players 'portable or not' still beat all that crap. Plus you can be left alone once in a while...you remember, disconnect? Honestly, how many of you actually need to be that portable, for that long a time? Most of you, and myself included, go from home, to your car, to work, and back again. Now for the cross country walkers, I can see where they may be interested. I think we all need to take a deep breath and actually let it out every once in a while. Peace... Glo

i have a chocolate and i like it, a lot, its not nearly what this article makes it out to be theres an "end" button to end a call and a "back" button to go back, i dont know what this person is talking about, the touch sensitive maybe weird at first but very easy to get used to

Anyone who thinks negative of this phone is stupid. Including the moron who wrote this post. Hes negative about everything. Its a phone. Who cares what it does. They make computers and Ipods for music and the internet. Jeeez. Get a palm pilot. I buy phones for looks and status not for what they can do.

I bought it & returned it the next day. I only looks cool but it not nearly as good as Samsung A950 or A990. Compare: LG Chocolate - No speakerphone, No camera flash, 1 music speaker, easily scratchable screen, annoying buttons Samsung A950 - speakerphone, 2 speakers, flash camera (same price as LG Chocolate) Samsung A990 - 3.2 megapixel camera, 2 speakers, speakerphone (about $200 more expensive)

The phone is great! I love it. yet a little tricky on the touch buttons and battery doesn't last very long, but if you have a few chargers handy....... well you get the point.

I have a Chocolate and I love it! It's a great phone, and you CAN end a call by simply pressing the "end" button on the side, even if you have to slide the phone - what's the big deal with that? It is a slider afterall. I find the menu to be very easy to use and I haven't had any problems with the touch sensitivity, which can also be adjusted in the easy-to-navigate menu. I haven't tried it as an mp3 player yet so I can't comment on that. You have access to excellent ringtones, wallpapers, and applications. I was with another carrier and they didn't have nearly the options that Verizon has. Overall I love this phone, I haven't found anyone that doesn't love it. I'm so glad I made the switch from my bulky Sidekick to the much sleeker Chocolate.

You might want to double check the chocolate before you say it doesnt have an"end" button. I just got it today and i found that it has it on the right side of the phone under the "music" button. I should be the writing the review on the chocolate dont you think. lol

i love this cell phone how can i get it i need to buy it for my own use.

My thing is battery life. As long as you don't go nuts on FLIX (video) mode, you'll be good. Only had it for a week so far and my only problem is the touch sensitive pad. You can't punch fast on this thing or else it goes haywire.

  • 25 Posted by motownking on Thu Sep 3, 2009 7:26PM EDT Report Abuse

I purchased the phone and I have no complaints. The sound is quality and the camera is a lot clearer than the last LG phone I had so it gets nothing but positive reviews from me. Even uploading your own music is easy and I would rather do that, than download at 2 bucks a pop.
