Some of this is old news, but much of it bears repeating. The idea is to focus on security at every stage where you could possibly lose your computer or where data could fall into the wrong hands.
To wit, it breaks down a little like this:
Deter thieves from trying by using a cable lock or other locking or alarm mechanism. Out of sight is best, and laptop bags scream "steal me."
Use LoJack or another tracking mechanism so you'll know when your machine has been stolen and where it has gone to.
Keep data secured from over-the-network thieves by running antivirus, anti-spyware, and firewall software.
Back up your data regularly so you're never at risk of data loss.
If a thief does get your laptop, make sure critical files are encrypted, making them impossible for a thief to read. (Not mentioned in the story: Password-protect your laptop!)
Software that automatically wipes your hard drive if your laptop is stolen is another good option for preventing data from falling into the wrong hands.
Have a plan for all of this and follow it diligently.
A plan like this gives you a series of contingencies: It helps keep the laptop from being stolen to being with, but if it is stolen it helps you find it; if you can't find it, it help you keep data out of thieve's hands; and if thieves do get the data, it helps delete that data and ensure you have a copy of your own. That's smart!
Our team is on it and we should have everything back to normal shortly. Please come back soon.
