Microsoft originally announced over a year ago that Windows XP would be going off the market in
January 2008. XP was later given a brief stay of execution, to June 30, 2008. That deadline is
fast approaching, which has led to much
panicking from people who aren't quite sure what XP's "going off
market" means, exactly.
People are still as confused as ever. So let's take a stab at clarifying, once again, what's going to happen by answering some frequently asked questions about XP's imminent disappearance.
Will Windows XP really no longer be on sale after June 30? Sorry for the double negative, but no. All this means is that Microsoft will stop selling the OS. Finding a computer with XP preinstalled will likely be very difficult, as well. However, you'll still be able to find copies for the foreseeable future, and likely the unforeseeable one, too. See for yourself: You can find copies of just about any Microsoft product, including ancient versions of Windows and even MS-DOS, by simply searching online. But hang on to your current copy of Windows XP. You may need it down the road if you don't want to move to Vista.
Will I be forced to upgrade to Vista soon? No. But it will get harder and harder not to, especially since new software and peripherals are likely to stop working with XP. That could take years.
Will my XP machine stop working in June? No, but Microsoft will stop releasing non-security software updates to the masses on April 14, 2009. But let's be clear: XP will continue to "work" even after this point.
Will Microsoft shut off product activation for XP after June? No, that would be crazy. While no one has said this will happen, it's conceivable that Windows could shut down product activation for XP at some point. But that would only happen after XP reaches its end-of-support term (when all support plans expire). The good news for you: That happens on April 8, 2014, which should be plenty of time to get the kinks worked out of Vista-or switch to a Mac, Linux, or anything else. Bottom line: Your copy of XP will work, totally legally, for at least six more years.
What about this exception for Windows XP Home Edition I hear about? Doesn't apply to you. Microsoft will continue to sell XP to makers of ultra-cheap laptops like the Asus Eee PC until 2010 because they just can't run Vista. But it is not going to make XP Home Edition available as installable software to end-users.
What about after 2014? Well, that's unclear. But it's possible XP will stop being installable at that point. Microsoft's official policy is that these dates have "no affect [sic] on how long you can use a product," which may imply product activation will work forever. However, two things come to mind:
1) Even the most die-hard XP enthusiast will probably be ready to upgrade at that point (as XP will be nearly 15 years old, and your PC will be dead by then, I'm sure).
2) Even if Microsoft shuts off product activation, the hacker community will certainly make dozens of tools to let you continue using XP with abandon. Fret not.
Can I install XP on a PC that has Vista already on it? Yes. You can delete any partition with any OS on it (and reformat it) during the installation of XP. If you're feeling brave, you can even run both OSes at the same time by setting up a dual-boot machine.
Whew! Does that clear everything up? Feel free to continue sending your queries and adding your comments below.

I have to say one thing, XP certainly is a little gem that would be missed. I suppose I'm going to have to buy a few licenses of the OS before it goes away.
by 2014 it will be time for vista to be where XP is now. linux and mac may be alternatives but theres nothing like good old windows. even 95 is pretty sweet!
Chris, After 20+ years, I'm thinking of switching over to Mac (I dread the thought of Vista and am scared of Windows 7. Is the Mac world experiencing any of the same problems/future for its operating system(s)?
Rogueist, You can buy windows xp at Staples and MicroCenter, as well as on the 'net. Windows xp AIN'T goin' away - even after it goes away.
I consider this a mistake xp should stay side by side with vista. Why the choice of one? What's next? Is Microsoft trying to lose customers.
Everybody I know is switching to Mac anyway. Less hassle apparently.
I am about fed up with the MS monopoly and crummy OS. Might be time for me to join the Linux revolution and kiss MS goodbye for good.
I am a Vista user that switched back to XP. Vista is too much of a system hog. My older pc just could not handle it, but it is a good pc. I do not want to update until a good OS (better than vista) comes out. Kev
Maybe a switch to a MAC wouldn't be a bad idea afterall, they are said to work better than PC anyway...
Will I be able to operate files created in XP with Vista?
windows vista should be taken off from the shelves not xp. All the people i know that had or still have vista complain about its many deficiencies.
Rogueist? I just bought a computer with XP (and there were many). You can buy XP on Amazon.
If they keep this up I will definitely be going to a MAC.
Sorry, but most pc's that come with VISTA installed will not have drivers that are compatible with any xp version. Mike McD. IT Pro.
I love XP. Im an bit apprehensive about purchasing Vista but I need a new computer. I think I will make the apple switch too.
is vista better
Wake Up cry-babies! If you don't like what Windows (Microsoft) is doing with XP, try another OS. If the number of Vista purchases don't increase-and they start losing $$$ then either return XP or they will lose $$ what do you think they'll do???
good joke.....ha.ha..ha. ;)
I have nothing against growing with the times. Every time Microsoft puts out a new OS, they have problems and bugs. You would think that with all the Expertise they have and dough, they could put some thing out that doesn't cause issues. This is not a 1st year model vehicle MS is producing. OS is their name. I am sticking with XP Pro until I can't anymore. I am sick of giving my money to MS just so they can create some thing else again. Improve on XP but NOOO.. they have to make more money. I am pretty tired of MS Monopoly. They should just make a board game called "Gates You Again".

I have Windows XP on one of my computers and I have Windows Vista on my new notebook computer. The XP system I've had not one problem with XP. I have Windows XP since the first day Staples put it on display, That is a long time to have no problems with an OP System. Vista so far I've had a few problems with. I love all the new features Vista has and I am so happy that Microsoft is fixng the main problems with Vista. The main problem will soon be in my windows update window or my control panel SP1 is the download to look for. Thank You Microsft because Vista is worth the wait. All the new features in Vista are great and worth waiting for. Joe R.
