Microsoft originally announced over a year ago that Windows XP would be going off the market in
January 2008. XP was later given a brief stay of execution, to June 30, 2008. That deadline is
fast approaching, which has led to much
panicking from people who aren't quite sure what XP's "going off
market" means, exactly.
People are still as confused as ever. So let's take a stab at clarifying, once again, what's going to happen by answering some frequently asked questions about XP's imminent disappearance.
Will Windows XP really no longer be on sale after June 30? Sorry for the double negative, but no. All this means is that Microsoft will stop selling the OS. Finding a computer with XP preinstalled will likely be very difficult, as well. However, you'll still be able to find copies for the foreseeable future, and likely the unforeseeable one, too. See for yourself: You can find copies of just about any Microsoft product, including ancient versions of Windows and even MS-DOS, by simply searching online. But hang on to your current copy of Windows XP. You may need it down the road if you don't want to move to Vista.
Will I be forced to upgrade to Vista soon? No. But it will get harder and harder not to, especially since new software and peripherals are likely to stop working with XP. That could take years.
Will my XP machine stop working in June? No, but Microsoft will stop releasing non-security software updates to the masses on April 14, 2009. But let's be clear: XP will continue to "work" even after this point.
Will Microsoft shut off product activation for XP after June? No, that would be crazy. While no one has said this will happen, it's conceivable that Windows could shut down product activation for XP at some point. But that would only happen after XP reaches its end-of-support term (when all support plans expire). The good news for you: That happens on April 8, 2014, which should be plenty of time to get the kinks worked out of Vista-or switch to a Mac, Linux, or anything else. Bottom line: Your copy of XP will work, totally legally, for at least six more years.
What about this exception for Windows XP Home Edition I hear about? Doesn't apply to you. Microsoft will continue to sell XP to makers of ultra-cheap laptops like the Asus Eee PC until 2010 because they just can't run Vista. But it is not going to make XP Home Edition available as installable software to end-users.
What about after 2014? Well, that's unclear. But it's possible XP will stop being installable at that point. Microsoft's official policy is that these dates have "no affect [sic] on how long you can use a product," which may imply product activation will work forever. However, two things come to mind:
1) Even the most die-hard XP enthusiast will probably be ready to upgrade at that point (as XP will be nearly 15 years old, and your PC will be dead by then, I'm sure).
2) Even if Microsoft shuts off product activation, the hacker community will certainly make dozens of tools to let you continue using XP with abandon. Fret not.
Can I install XP on a PC that has Vista already on it? Yes. You can delete any partition with any OS on it (and reformat it) during the installation of XP. If you're feeling brave, you can even run both OSes at the same time by setting up a dual-boot machine.
Whew! Does that clear everything up? Feel free to continue sending your queries and adding your comments below.

Windows XP is a proven best. Vista is just another money maker like the worthless Windows Millenium version. Alas, corporate greed...the real root of all evil.
I found Windows XP at some stores not too long ago because of Vist's hefty hardware and sectiry requirements, But don't know if XP has been taken off the shelves since I saw it at the stores I saw it at.
i have tried vista, still have it on my machine.i have noticed lately more and more problems,so i'm going back to xp.they need to leave xp on the market till at least the can work all the bugs out of vista
""Can I install XP on a PC that has Vista already on it? Yes. You can delete any partition with any OS on it (and reformat it) during the installation of XP. If you're feeling brave, you can even run both OSes at the same time by setting up a dual-boot machine."" Poor advice and this should be clarified. Much of the new computer hardware on the market does not have driver support for Windows XP. This is not because the computer manufactures want to force Vista on us but because of limits in the Windows XP OS when it comes to dealing with 64 bit hardware and the core cornel used in Vista which is built on the Windows NT platform. The best bet for diehard XP fans is to have a system built that has support for both XP and Vista. This type of hardware however will not be available much longer. One of the main reasons is Direct X 10. Direct X 10 is a software designed by Microsoft that helps render 3D video; Direct X 10 is not available for Windows XP and never will be. Once again this is a limitation within the operating system itself. Be brave, be bold, and do not fear Vista. The bad rep Vista has received has to do with early Vista compatible hardware that did not have the bugs worked out and companies that built Vista computers without enough RAM memory. After the learning curve you will love Vista. Dan FaJohn PC Medics A+
darkbat069 stated "XP really hasn't been out that long for them to just abandon it and leave everyone who has it helpless." THIS IS SO UNTRUE. Windows XP was released in 2002 making it the longest run of any Microsoft OS. That is a six year life in an industry that sees multiple changes every six months. The computers designed to run XP in the beginning were 750MHz or so compared with the 3GHz and up units now available. XP was designed for old technology. It's time to unlock the power...
I have had the same Install Loop happen to my Dell (1 year old) laptop for about 2 months now. I hate Vista. I have given it a year, and still would rather have XP...
So is it time for the uninitiated to look at linux or do you have to be a hackerbrain to understand that system? \
If Windows Vista Is so Great . why is everyone wanting to keep Xp or dowb grade to it maybe Mircosoft should listen to its Coustomers If Xp is what they want it sort of speaks for its self Just my opinion
I just loaded xp mce and it finds drivers xp pro sp2 didn't since it is xp pro with add on I guess that means it will be phased out as well AM I CORRECT? Also OS LINUX2008 is not compatible with all pc's I am thinking about offering an option to my customers when linux is compatible
wait this means i have to buy another computer with windows vista on it? also can i put a windows vista program and delete my xp program in ma computer!!!ahhhh im comfused i need an clear explanation!
Microsoft provides a non-functional operating system (VISTA) and then is trying to stop making it available to the service industry.. Sounds allot like the atrocities of the railroad monopolies of the 19th century.
XP, i love XP
I dont know how to use vista, where i can find any media to learn from it
Could anyone please tell me whether FreeDOS is compatible with Windows XP ?? I need to know this pretty soon. Regards, John

Finally!!!! I'm so sick of XP. Why is it the worst OS ever is the one they keep the longest? Every single XP I ever saw had problems with it. Heck I even Bought a computer just days before Vista was released...it had XP on it(It came with a free upgrade to Vista). Even within the first week it(XP)locked up on me. I had to take it to a specialist to fix it. Then I switched to Vista and it has been smooth sailing. Heck it runs so good even over a year later I still have the factory wallpaper on it
