As if they didn't have enough stress in their lives, millions of BlackBerry users suddenly found their email nonfunctional last night and this morning when RIM's messaging service abruptly went dark. Those itching for an email fix in the middle of the night had to put away the smart phones and bust out their laptops. The service was restored this morning around 7 a.m.
The scary thing about the outage isn't just that the service was offline for 12-plus hours but that RIM still doesn't know what caused it. That means it could happen pretty much any time—and not just to BlackBerrys but to any wireless device like them. And BlackBerrys are supposed to be the reliable ones, historically known for their "rock solid" service, as PC World notes.
So what's the lesson here? Don't put all your techie eggs in one basket, and always have an alternate means of getting access to critical information like your email.
RIM says that nearly all BlackBerry users should have their service back by now, but if not, ABC News is reporting you should take these steps to fix it:Â

NO wonder my blacberry wasn't working. :(
Does anyone believe that RIM doesn't know what happened? "Yea, they all just quit working and we have no idea why"...here's your sign man! Apparently, we can't handle the truth!
OMGERZ THE BLACKBERRYZ SRS BIZNAZ!
10 bucks says they know what it was but arent saying.
Just cause ppl have blackberrt's doesn't mean their nerds or dorks =.= that's kinda like saying all ppl with comps are nerds or dorks. cause i have a blackberry and i'm not a nerd or dork =/
who the heck needs to check their email at one AM anyways?
2978 charachters left.
Mine quit working, and yes i do need my email at 2 am because i work nights, but it came back up and all my emails came through. all the people that are complaining about people even having blackberrys are just jealous that they can't afford one or the cell phone bill that goes along with it...
What is a BlackBerry? No Friggin Clue here.
It kind of makes you wonder when cell phone service providers refuse to insure ANY Blackberry product. Maybe they know something we dont!
Weird! My aunt called in about her phone and she was pretty mad becasue she pays about 300$$$$ per month!!!
if your life depends on a cell phone then thats terrorism not buying weed from a friend
It was the government, had to be!
I squeezed out a Blackberry last night, it was hard and stinky... and it went all night long. Maybe RIM should take a lesson from my RIM?
i own a blackberry and love it. so frigging what it went out for 12 hours. oh my god, the world is going to end. the world needs to get a grip and quit looking for blood at every turn. our lives continued and no one was killed. cant say the same for those virginia tech students who really faced a tragedy. lighten up america, your precious little blackberry phones will be up and running so you can obsessively check your emails.
lol2u noobs who dont kno how2play bbery lolroflol----- lol
Right on! rebel7205! I always buy my weed from a friend.
