BlackBerry Goes Down, BlackBerry Goes Up

As if they didn't have enough stress in their lives, millions of BlackBerry users suddenly found their email nonfunctional last night and this morning when RIM's messaging service abruptly went dark. Those itching for an email fix in the middle of the night had to put away the smart phones and bust out their laptops. The service was restored this morning around 7 a.m.

The scary thing about the outage isn't just that the service was offline for 12-plus hours but that RIM still doesn't know what caused it. That means it could happen pretty much any time—and not just to BlackBerrys but to any wireless device like them. And BlackBerrys are supposed to be the reliable ones, historically known for their "rock solid" service, as PC World notes.

So what's the lesson here? Don't put all your techie eggs in one basket, and always have an alternate means of getting access to critical information like your email.

RIM says that nearly all BlackBerry users should have their service back by now, but if not, ABC News is reporting you should take these steps to fix it:

  • From the main screen, use the track wheel to select the radio tower icon (turn wireless off).
  • Click the track wheel to turn the radio off.
  • Wait five seconds.
  • Click the track wheel to turn the radio back on (turn wireless on).
  • You will need to wait a minute for the network to sync up. You should see all capital letters in the top right corner of your screen.
  • NOTE: Test whether the BlackBerry can send and receive. If not, please continue.
  • Remove the battery from the BlackBerry. Wait a minute. Put it back in.
  • Once the device boots up, validate your radio tower is on.
  • You will need to wait a minute for the network to sync up. You should see all capital letters in the top right corner of your screen.

Here is the real scoop, There are still some Black Beeriies out there without the tracking chip used when calling 911. These are basically illegal, terrorist use them. They tried to down load a new program in order to locate these phones. Paranoia is thehighest state of awareness.

My roomate has a Blackberry and she was in the middle of a heated argument with her boyfriend when hers went out. I know this, not just because of the yelling, but because when it went black, she chucked it against the wall and it broke, so it doesn't matter if the service was restored at 7 a.m. or not to her.

my friend has a black berry. that must really suck because the black berry is sopossed to be "wirerless" meaning not having to use your laptop or computer. And just because the have black berries does't mean they are nerds, doggystyle98. what kind of phone do you have, a fire fly?

I'm still having periodic interruptions with my blackberry. Messages sent earlier today have been delayed in arriving on my device. I was about to lambaste Cingular for continued problems with their service but I'll have to hold off until next time.

i don't have a blackberry & couldn't afford one at the moment (if i did want one). but i won't talk s*** about the "rich" people who do b/c there are so many people who spend as much $$ or just too much of their income in general on the lease for the car they drive, their apparel & accessories, drugs, eating out too often, their newly remodeled kitchen, their new deluxe king-size bed, car parts b/c they're obsessed with building autos and working on them, vacations they can't afford, gambling, purebred animals, big ol' plasma screen t.v.'s, etc. i'd fall into the apparel & restaurant category, or at least i would have until a couple of years ago. cheers.
