9 Ways to Save Money on Your Cell Phone Bill

When's the last time you took a good, hard look at your mobile phone bill? Kind of shocking, isn't it? Most people are now paying more for their cell phone than for a tricked-out land line. And for what? Some games you never play and a ringtone from "In Da Club"? Here's how to attack your cell phone bill and cut it down to size.

  1. Right-size your minutes. If you have a substantial number of minutes leftover every month, cut back as much as possible. Most plans let you carry over minutes from a prior month, so don't worry if you're a few minutes over once in awhile, provided you have a few dozen minutes in reserve. (Just be careful not to use them all up: Overage is crazy expensive.)
  2. Check for services you don't use. Cingular signed me up for a $3 a month emergency roadside assistance plan which I never asked for. One call got the service removed.
  3. Get rid of old games and ringtones. Though less common now than a few years ago, some of this stuff still comes with recurring billing, which can really add up. Third-party providers are the worst of the bunch, often using misleading tactics to trick you into subscribing for useless services. That dumb fishing game isn't worth $60 a year. Rather than spend $2.50 on a ringtone, make your own out of the MP3 you already own, for free.
  4. Take advantage of in-network and friends & family plans. Many carriers offer free calls to certain numbers or other phones on their wireless network. Ask your most frequent callees what carrier they're on and follow suit.
  5. Consider pay-as-you-go. If you make only a few calls a month, smaller carriers like Virgin, Boost, and STI let you pay by the minute. Cingular, Verizon, and T-Mobile also offer prepaid plans if you ask, but be warned, smaller carriers often suffer from poor coverage and prepaid phones are usually very basic and unsexy (though T-Mobile offers a prepaid Sidekick).
  6. Axe data services. Do you really need mobile email? Text messaging? High-speed web browsing? If you can't live without it, keep the services, but at $15 to $50 extra a month, you could be facing an extra $600 in expense each year for something you never use. The worst offenders: Entertainment packages, which let you watch TV clips and hear a few songs for a ridiculous $20 a month. Even if you have a music-capable phone you don't have to subscribe to the media plan. Just load it up with your own MP3s and listen to your music for free.
  7. Stop it with all the texting. If you're paying by the message, that's about 15 cents for each "Hey what u doin????" Just call the person instead. And I hate to break it to you, but your votes for Jordin on American Idol just aren't going to matter.
  8. Don't be afraid to dispute inaccurate charges. Watch your bill closely for third-party charges which you may not have authorized. The key is to identify where the charges are coming from, as soon as possible. (Two great stories can be found here.) Be forceful when you call. Cell phone companies will often cave if you demand satisfaction and threaten to leave for another carrier, and third-party companies can often be coerced into refunding several months of unauthorized billing.
  9. Report lost or stolen cell phones immediately. Thieves can quickly run up multi-thousand dollar bills and, if you don't report the loss, you're liable for the damage. The web is littered with reports of people stuck with bills for 10 grand or more after innocently misplacing their phone.

it actually depends on what company you are with.if you are sent a text that u dont want its maybe for something you filled out with your mobile number. with my company all of my incoming texting is free and i only pay for my outgoing messages. the one minute that you lower your minutes would be the time that you actually needed them.

Sprint can block all incoming and outgoing text messages. You can also go on-line & access your Sprint account and block certain people/numbers from sending text messages to you. You can also block outgoing text messages to certain people/numbers.

Heth365- I agree with you, I could save on my t-mobile plan, but my husband and I would loose some features that they no longer offer! We don't use all of our minutes each month, but the amount of minutes that we have in our plan, we would have to pay a higher price, because t-mobile no longer offers at the same price.

I used to work for Sprint for 5 years. I believe they are a GOOD wireless company all of the major companies have their own faults and I have had Cingular, AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. If you have had a problem with your phone shutting off then try paying your bill. I will give you some insight.... If you are near the end of your contract there are killer plans called retention plans. These plans are loaded.. nights starting at 7 for free, 500 min for $40 with nation wide roaming. Sprint will do a lot to keep you and put you in another contract. Also they can take money off your plan if you renew your contract. Just ask

Alltel will let you put a block on sending and\or receiving text for free. However, it then blocks all.

Hey you hit the nail on the head about all the extras, but also watch AT&Ts billing as I had Cingular and did fine untill AT&T bought them out,all of a sudden I wa----- with every kind of extra charge on earth and had to fight with them monthly about the billing, finally I did the smart thing and just switched to a trusted carrier that my family uses and am back as happy as a lark again,so don't let them cheat you out of your money for no reason.

I have had T mobile now for a little over three years with 3 lines on it. We have unlimited text for only $10 FOR ALL 3 LINES, 1000 mins which we end up using only about 500.. and we pay less then $100 a month....I will stick with them for a long time because I have never had a problems what so ever...and espeically because I have 2 teenagers.

first of all for all the ppl that say cell phone co's are ripping you off its not true. your just not educated enough to know that browsing on internet with your phone without a data package can coast alot. . Just trying to look up the weather can coast you $20. educate yourself pay attention to what the sales rep tells you most of the ppl here that are bad mouthing cell phone co's are just oldder ppl that dont realize that the world is changing. technology is the future. and as far as the in network that verizon has is bull. the only way you can be in the in network is if your signal from your cell phone reaches a verizon tower. if it doesnt then your not considered as being IN. No one knows the chances of you hitting one of your cell phone providers towers. honestly cingular is thee best for what it charges. First of all,Cingular BOUGHT AT&T wireless. The only reason Cingular is useing the AT&t logo is because its more marketable. Cingular as of now has the best coverages due to all the towers they acuired from the perchuse. they also have unlimited mobil to mobile to cingular phone and AT&t land lines. they have the most costumer of all the cell phone co's. They charge just a little more then everyone else because they offer more. bigger network and better quality. i know because i've worked for them verizon and sprint.

I have Cellular phone service 800 nationwide anytime minutes, and I have nights and weekends free starting at 7Pm which is another $5.95 a month. I have free incoming calls, and my total bill per month is $56 and that is a great deal, and for all you phone users, I have never had a droped call in the two years that I have been with them. I like them very much, because I have never had to call them for any complaints so far. I have read all the 77 posted coments before mine and am supprised that know one else uses Cellular. Why not try Cellular? Please let me know if anyone has had any problems with Cellular Service. You also get to receive all text messing free, you only pay for out going text messing which is $0.15 per text. Also with the 800 Nationwide anytime minutes there is no roaming charges. Signed, Hgg

I have t-mobile and have had nothing but good experiences with them. My house burnt down and took my phone with it. I didn't have the insurance but the gave me more than half off the price of the new one(i didn't yet qualify for the upgrade discount) then they gave me 200 extra minutes for free just so i could get things taken care of and never gave me a moments grief. I was very impressed by this great customer service because i used to have sprint and it was like pulling teeth just talking to them.

I and about 7 members of my family have had Sprint for several years! They have been fantastic with us. Whenever we have had any type of problem whether it was one of the kids accidentally dropping their phone in the toilet or going over on minutes when another family member was dying and not being in a place to immediately pay a bill that was past due - they have always worked with us and kept things going, given new phones, you name it. They turn phones temporarily on and off no problem for our service members when they are out of the country. All you have to do is act like a human when you call and speak to customer service or go into one of their stores and it's never been a problem. The only place that service has been difficult is in highly wooded more remote areas and a few times in more hilly terrain. The rest of the time their reception and usability is great. I mean if you buy a crappy phone I don't care who your are with you will get crappy reception. Come on buying a $49 wonder isn't going to get you good reception. Buy something decent, upgrade when its technologically worth upgrading or you have had your phone for a couple years - this isn't rocket science. Sprint is a good carrier and from what I've heard from friends and how many friends I've sent to Sprint who are now happy - I'd say they are one of the better ones going!

I have a #10 for you, though it should actually be #1! Just don't have a cell phone at all, there's a novel thought. I mean what happened to the good old days when the only people who had these things were criminals and spies? I had an easier time applying for a mortgage than trying to convince my 10-year-old he has no need for a cell phone!! What's this world coming to?

I have been with Sprint since they first started, my coberage has been great from the binging, I have been able to use my phone in any state I have been in as well as Canada. Their proces are very resonable and when I have had to deal with customer service it has been a good experience. I even had an agent tell me that I should change my coverage to a lesser plan since I never reached my maximum coverage, so I did and have saved considerable money in a years time. I heartily recommend Sprint.

Sprint to Sprint is free if you pay $5 per month for that feature. I have it with my daughter, SIL, and 2 grandkids. I have grandkids on my plan. It's usually about 71 per month.the 2nd phone is 20 per month the 3 phone is 10 per month. So for 30 dollars per month my 2 grandkids have cell phones. I don't get them much in the way of Christmas/birthday gifts. Prefer to get them cell phones. They are 19 and 14 yrs old. I believe it is a different, unsafe world and they need phones out there. Many times I've said, Thank God for cell phones.
