We've got a bona-fide heat wave here in San Francisco (and no one has A/C in S.F.), which reminded me of this amusing/interesting story I read last week.
1Up Editor John Davison's PS3, quite literally, killed his Xbox 360. How? By accidentally running both together in a glass-enclosed entertainment cabinet. Those little fans in both the PS3 and 360 may be grindingly loud, but that doesn't mean they're up to the task of handling the heat of two game machines running full bore without ventilation. The 360 is notoriously prone to dying from heat exposure, and that's exactly what happened here.
The days of glass cabinets being appropriate for your A/V rack are long since behind us, alas. Even modest A/V components require substantial ventilation: I've even seen racks with regular fans blowing fresh air on them to keep overheating at bay. And when electronic components succumb to heatstroke, they don't slowly melt away; they shut off like a light switch, suddenly and without warning.

Actually, It's pretty clear the 360 killed itself out of sheer embarassment. It's puny 8-gig DVD drive constantly being put to shame by the PS3's massive 50-gig Blu-ray drive. It must have got a glimpse of Resistance's 30+ gorgeous HD levels and realized that HD games on 360 are going to have to be limited to, say, six levels a la Gears of War. If his 360 was a Core version (with no hard drive) well, the poor little guy never stood a chance. As Rockstar -- the developer of the Grand Theft Auto series -- recently stated, the lack of a guaranteed hard drive in every console severely limits their ability to develop for the 360. Yes, I think we're going to see more and more 360 consoles flinging themselves out windows and gassing themselves in the garage with the car running and the door closed. It must be humiliating for them to be so blatantly unprepared for any future outside of another year or two.
Do you actually believe the crap that comes out of your mouth? O.o If I remember right, Gears is more critically acclaimed than Resistence. Guess size doesn't make a better game, huh? Care to bring up the fact that most multi-plats look and play better on the 360?
Kolanda44 I couldn't agree with you more. Everything you said is 100% correct. Again, why would you have the two running together anyways? By the way, I own a first gen launch 360, and nothing has ever happened other than a freeze up every once and a while. The whole "360's overheat" thing is blown way out of proportion.
Buy a Wii. It doesnt normally get hot itself. Just put a good heat sink on the power brick, and you are set.
