Commentary about whether violent video games trigger violent behavior in the real world never seems to die down, but lately it's hitting a fever pitch. A new study suggests that the issue might be more complex than previously thought: Specifically that violent games can increase aggression without increasing anger.
If the study is correct, that's a subtle but important distinction. Aggression is something that everyone experiences, all the time, when faced with a hostile environment: Watching a violent TV show or playing a video game both seem to increase aggression, as does the stress of sitting in a hot room. Think about sitting in traffic on the way to work. You may drive a little more aggressively afterward, but does it make you more likely to go on a gun rampage?
The study suggests that, for psychologically stable people, violent video games are no different than any other stressful stimulus, causing only a slight rise in aggression levels after they're played. It's when you deal with unstable personalities (what the research calls angry personalities) that games can cause a problem: Substantially increased aggression levels that could, over time, raise long-term anger levels. That's a problem.
The solution outlined in the research: Identify and intervene with dangerous personalities without restricting or banning content outright. The vast majority of people are simply unaffected by violent games in any significant way, but for those with emotional issues, you're adding fuel to the fire.

Isn't it about time that the truth is told? People who constantly play violent video games are losers. Video games in general have become the boob tube of days gone by. And violent video games are played by people who can't seem to get a grip on "real life". Sure people will say it is only a game...but they have to say something or risk being exposed to the losers that they really are. The brains of Pac Man and the backbones of a jelly fish.
All these studies are laughable to me.I have played every violent video game known to man, including all the grand theft auto series.Theres no anger its the opposite i laugh and get a kick out of it cause some of the stuff you can do is so outrageous. Its this simple people,if you are a normal person you play the video games for fun and it don't make you aggresive, you shut it off and go about your day.If someone's kid does flip out it has nothing to do with a video game and everything to do with that kid having mental issues.I am so tired of parents blaming video games for their kids actions.Maybe thats the better thing to point the finger at then having to admit bad genetics is probably more to blame for the kids behavior.
people who play violent video games are losers hfrank? LOL thats the dumbest comment i ever heard a person make.Becuase you don't like a hobby of playing video games call people who do losers? Man I think you are the one who needs a grip on reality. You probably logged off here and went and grabbed your playboy collection fantasizing about women you can never have but we don't have touch with reality LOL.I think the real problem is Hfrank is that you tried video games and sucked at them so you call everyone else a loser who is good at them and enjoys them.Brains of Pac Man? Hmmm I play video games and i probably still make more money on accident then you make on purpose. So if i have brains of Pac Man where does that leave you? Somewhere under that level.
I have to agree that It is only used by people as a cop out to dealing with the responsibility of their actions. There will always be people out there that point at an external source and blame It, never willing to accept responsibility for their own actions or feelings. It will always be something or someone else's fault. If they do It as kids and It works they continue their habit into adulthood where there is no room for those childish blame games. And that is when It falls apart they snap when they no longer can hold It all together. Which is eventual without the unbreakable structural base of truth and love. I believe alot of It lies with the parents refusal to allow their children to face responsibility for their actions they are only delaying the inevitable and when it does happen It is way worse than it had to be because It built up for so long and they are no longer there to protect their children from themselves. How many times have you heard parents blindly defending their hooligan children in refusal and denial to see what they have created. All I can say Is If you really love your kids than don't build the habit in them of always looking for an external source to point the finger at when things don't work out look within and all answers will be found, And don't make them fear mistakes or inability. The pressure that puts onto children is immense. Don't make them fear failure because the lessons learned with that failure will guarantee success in another.

Interstingly enough, most FOREIGN tests in this arena show that playing violent video games are great for the health, reduce stress levels, and also can serve as a tool for preparing people to deal with crisis situations calmly, rather than freaking out. It is only here in the US that people try to pin the blame on violence on video games, when in reality the people who actually do most of the violent crimes in the US (a) have never seen a video game, (b) have never played a video game and (c) consider video games to be stupid. It is only because of two or three (yes, only 2 or 3) very high profile cases that get media attention every year, versus the 1.5 MILLION other violent crimes that happen in the US every year, that people are all of a sudden "up in arms" about violent video games. Society needs a reality check. Many of them. And soon. The nonsense is getting out of hand with trying to pin the blame on things that done reflect reality.
