For a mere $500 you can now have the tip top of the Treo line, the 700wx.
The 700wx is an upgrade to the 700w, the Windows Mobile-based version of the Treo. And let's cut to the chase about why you might prefer it to the standard 700w. Here's what's new or upgraded:
Watch that last step; it's a doozy. Despite early hopes, there's no GPS, no major RAM upgrade, and not even a screen resolution upgrade on the 700wx. $200 for dial-up networking and a little faster response time? That's frightening.
Also, don't expect much service difference between Verizon and Sprint. Since both Verizon and Sprint networks use CDMA/EV-DO service, there's no real difference in the type and quality of calls. If you're already using a Treo on Verizon, the experience will probably be about the same on Sprint.
My recommendation? If you're a Sprint user, this is the only way to get a Windows Mobile Treo, and it's only $100 more than the 700p, which Sprint also offers. If the OS is worth that much to you, go for the new one. But if you're on a different network and already have the 700w, you definitely won't want to break your current contract so you can get what amounts to a modest upgrade at best. I'd expect prices to fall rapidly over the next six months, too, so hang in there.
UPDATE: I finally got my hands on a Treo 700wx to do some hands-on testing and it does indeed respond faster than the 700w, but there's a catch: I got about 4 hours, 45 minutes of talk time until the battery died with the 700wx, vs. 5 hours, 30 minutes with the 700w. Not a huge difference, but one worth noting if you're considering the switch.

as a user who has had both sprint and verizon the network covereage is different. In many rural areas Verizon has service and sprint doesn't.
I've read too many complaints from people stating that their Treo didn't work. I've had a 650 since they came out almost two years ago and it's worked fine. Sometimes you'll install a program that doesn't work well with the OS on your phone or causes reboots, you need to delete it. If you're going to get into high tech, cutting edge gadgets you should expect that there will be some trial and error, and use a little more common sense. I've also had Treos that go bad, that's what the insurance is for. If you buy a $400 phone and don't get the $5 per month insurance than you really have nobody else to blame besides yourself when something goes wrong, this is true for anything this expensive, and delicate. In conclusion, if you complain that a treo (or other mainstream electronic device) doesn't work, most likely the problem is user error.
I Have A Treo 650 For 6 Months Now And I Have Dropped It 2 times And It Still Works Fine, I Love The 650. With Its Palm OS PDA, Email, Phone It Has Never Let Me Down. The Treos Are A Good Choice, I Won't Give Mine Up.
good phone very effective to keep you organize in school
from my observation, its a machine for everyone who cares.
I have a Sprint PPC6700 instead of a Treo 700W. The deciding factor was the WI/FI. I am surprised an upgrade to the 700WX would not have WI/FI capabilities.
Is there a site where you can hear the good and bad about a phone? peter mysabel3@hotmail.com
stay away from the treo700w,700wx ... go with the treo700p because the treo700p screen has twice the resolution...yes TWICE! that means twice as much sms & email text on the screen, twice as much webpage content, twice as sharp pics and videos...twice as much EVERYTHING on the screen. think about why u want a smartphone in the first place.
I think that the treo's are great phones and that when it comes to cell phones it is hard to find one that is perfect. But I love the treo and a side of the small nitches I think it is still a great phone to have the old and the new ones

This article is incorrect. Both Treos are the same price with Sprint. Also I know that Sprint has an expanded coverage of data, especially the EVDO. They also allow Data roaming which means if you are in an area that does not get Sprint service but say there is the Verizon evdo coverage most phones can pick up on this coverage. In addition to all this, Sprint is getting ready to launch an even faster version of EVDO. And the prices normally do not fall. The PPC-6700 has been out for almost a year now and has only declined $50 in price. I haven't seen anyone with this treo yet, but I do know that those who have the 700p with Sprint are pleased. Also I am not sure what the data plans with Verizon are, but with sprint they are $15 for basic usage, $20 for picture and video mail, $25 for added tv channels, and then there is the phone as a modem plan which is $39.99 which includes all the normal vision services. That is pretty good considering the freedom of being able to use high speed internet just about anywhere you wish.
