For a mere $500 you can now have the tip top of the Treo line, the 700wx.
The 700wx is an upgrade to the 700w, the Windows Mobile-based version of the Treo. And let's cut to the chase about why you might prefer it to the standard 700w. Here's what's new or upgraded:
Watch that last step; it's a doozy. Despite early hopes, there's no GPS, no major RAM upgrade, and not even a screen resolution upgrade on the 700wx. $200 for dial-up networking and a little faster response time? That's frightening.
Also, don't expect much service difference between Verizon and Sprint. Since both Verizon and Sprint networks use CDMA/EV-DO service, there's no real difference in the type and quality of calls. If you're already using a Treo on Verizon, the experience will probably be about the same on Sprint.
My recommendation? If you're a Sprint user, this is the only way to get a Windows Mobile Treo, and it's only $100 more than the 700p, which Sprint also offers. If the OS is worth that much to you, go for the new one. But if you're on a different network and already have the 700w, you definitely won't want to break your current contract so you can get what amounts to a modest upgrade at best. I'd expect prices to fall rapidly over the next six months, too, so hang in there.
UPDATE: I finally got my hands on a Treo 700wx to do some hands-on testing and it does indeed respond faster than the 700w, but there's a catch: I got about 4 hours, 45 minutes of talk time until the battery died with the 700wx, vs. 5 hours, 30 minutes with the 700w. Not a huge difference, but one worth noting if you're considering the switch.

I've had a treo 650 for about 18 months now. I cannot begin to enumerate the ways in which this product sucks. I must say I admire, however, the way in which it seems to innovate new ways to suck on a nearly daily basis, despite being practically ancient for a handheld tech device. It powers off randomly, drops calls, fails to boot, reboots, soft boots, loses files, won't synch, can't synch, requires a propietary cable, ineffective/nonfunctional bluetooth, wont hold a charge, has miserable battery life... my god, the only thing it does _well_ is pull my belt down where it's brick-like mass is anchored to my waist. Sometimes I think that it awakens at night to download new ways to suck from diabolical centeral Palm server. Tellingly, not one of my vast legion of techno-nerd friends, some of whom were Palm loyalists just a few short years ago, can stand their various Treos (Trei?) either. It's unanimous, they SUCK! Palm devices are all flash. No Wi-Fi? In a device of this size, with this much internal room? A half day battery life in a _new_ device (assuming bluetooth)? Crazy. Get a Blackberry.
Poorly written review. Instead of listing the price of the phones with carrier activation bonus (ie, you need to sign a NEW 2 year agreement) why not just list the MSRP to make it less confusing. In that case the price difference is only $29.00. $620.00 for VZ and $649.00 for Sprint.
I have the 600 and loved it until I really started to use it for what I bought it for. The access to the web is cruddy (can't download anything because it says it's too large) so I basically use it for text messages, phone and instant messaging. I was REALLY disappointed in Sprint when I moved and found out that this device is useless in my area (internet access is not possible while roaming). I have toyed with buying the new "upgraded" ones because I love new gadgets but each time I see the price, I hit cancel on the order page. Just not worth it.
LISTEN TO ME BEFORE BUYING A TREO 700!!! I know 3 people that have one and we are ALL on our 2nd or 3rd. Treo (verizon 700W) is NOT ready for market. This is level 1 support: "Sir, please soft reset"... This is level 2 support: "Sir, please send the phone in for a complete replacement...". I couldn't begin to name all of the little quirks (oh, sorry BUGS) with this thing. Well here is a start - freezing up of window and the need to perform soft reset often, CRAZY call management - if you put one party on hold and answer a call and hang up it hangs up both calls, alarm funkiness - (this from a friend) - alarm wants to go off an hour earlier then set!?!?!, the wonderful message about the sim card being inserted "do you want to update your library" over and over and over, the "VOICEMAIL" title when there is NO VOICEMAIL, and on and on and on... REally, this gadget WHEN IT WORKS, is awesome and a great BETA, I just think they needed to work on the firmware a bit more before release. Another KUDO is the thing is rock solid durable. It can be dropped and not have anything wrong with it (... and that's NOT why me or my friends are having issues with ours). So it's definately rugged. That is my 2 cents. Be warned...
The treo is amaizing...I had the 600, the 650, and about to get the new 700. Cant wait and never had a problem with verizon
when can i get for altell
Yes I think the treo is worth every penny.
Wow, I just want to thank all of the people who posted the 'real deal' about their Treos. My husband and I started a small online business and deal with freelancers internationally, so email is a huge part of the day. I've been pondering getting a portable device for email and phone for a year now, and when I do get one I think it'll be a Blackberry. Our budget's really tight so a loss of even 400 bucks would hurt. I will not be buying a Treo. Thanks again!
This thing is a real letdown. Already outdated technology in a fancy mouthy used car sales type offering.Wait a few months for the models with ALL the goodies like GPS, MP3, AND 3+MP COMBINED to start hitting for the same money.
I like the Treo, but one simple fact has revealed why I will never again by the Treo: the darn thing restarts / reboots constantly. This is annoying, and absolutely inexcusable for such a high-priced product. Check the message boards out there to hear of the many restart / reboot problems happening to customers. Reliability is a must; Treos don't have that.
Why bother pass the buck and tweak the bugs out and pass it on to the consumer it sounds like the gas companies...excuses exxxxx
I've had my treo 650 for 15 months now. Like everyone else, my treo (cingular) has some horrible habits: 1. reboots randomly at least 2 times a day, hangs up when trying to swap calls, inconsistently connects to bluetooth, and mysteriously deletes files. I've had to get volumecare (3rd party software) to boost the volume so I can actually hear conversations. But, I'm so reliant on my palm pda i've been hesitant to switch. As a phone, it has poor reception and poor volume. As a pda, when it isn't spazzing out, it's great. Based on the 650, I'm hesitant to buy a 700. I'm thinking pda separately from a good plain old cell phone.
TECHheads chill and get a life
Wow I really am surprised that it doesn't appear to have fixed the synch issues with files and such.... at least that is what it sounds like so far. The W and WX I don't think are ready for prime time. maybe the wz model will fix those sync issues.
I love my Treo 650, but it's hard to get excited when there's still no Blackberry support for Sprint. If this new phone had it, i'd probably pay $600 for it.
Christopher, You missed an opportunity to answer the one fundamental question, "Why would ANYONE want to move to Windows Mobile 5"? WM5, as it is usually abbreviated, is packed with typical Microsoft quality products that do not interoperate. For instance: 1) Contact information can not be linked into the calendar, making it necessary to memorize phone numbers (call John at 10AM at - what's his number?) and/or addresses (Dinner at John's at 7PM at - what's his address?), in order to make appointments beyond Meet in Conference Room A. 2) And of course if the phone number is in the calendar, you can not dial that number by taping on it. If a person with an entry in contacts calls, the phone number can not be added to the existing entry. Here, at least, is one of those cases where copy/paste DOES afford some level of interoperability. 3) But dont bet on Copy/Paste. The venerable Cut/Copy Paste will often as not let you can copy from one application, while Paste just not available in the receiving application. 4) Text messaging is separated from email messaging. I suppose Microsoft cant figure out that email addresses contain an embeded "@" followed by text followed by a period followed by more text, while phone numbers are, well, basically numbers (with dashes or periods, and possibly parenthesis). 5) And the Voice Signal product, used for voice command activation, is next to worthless in anything more noisy than a library. Unfortunately, I do have a WM5 machine. I also have a Palm T5. Dollar per function, the T5 running Palm OS performs better, has applications that afford better integration, and is more reliable. Yes, dear friends, occassional reboot of WM5 when all else fails, is a fact of life. Marc Krigel
If you bother actually looking at how much Verizon's data plans costs versus Sprint's data plan, you'll make up the price difference between phones within 2 months. The price difference between plans is such that you can buy Sprint's phone many times over, depending on which of Verizons plans you choose. DO SOME RESEARCH before writing articles such as this!
TREO SIMPLY PUT IS OVERRATED!!! I had the 650 for about a week traded in for the 700w thinking it was a better choice. Had to get that replaced twice. Got tired of the windows freezing, daily soft resets, not being able to end calls, not being able to make calls. 1 perk, I could play bubble breaker, but who wants to pay $400 for a game boy. Resolution sucks and forget about the speaker phone, what good is it if the other party can't hear you. You know you got a bum phone when you go to the Verizon store and 3 other people are in line for the same reasons. I ended up getting the 6700 which has the same features and had no problems since.
OK. I read through a bunch of these comments and just had to post something. Anybody trying to decide on a Treo, reading forums and reviews are great, but do not base your decision on this. You need to go to a store and actually play with one. People use them for so many different things that it is not possible to say this is great for everybody because everybody uses it different. I have the Treo 700p and will probably switch to this for a couple basic reasons. 1. It supports the Palm Wi-Fi Card which I would use to access a VPN wireless. 2. It now supports Direct-Push e-mail, the technology that made blackberry very popular. So for what I use it for, this makes sense. I am not even going to get into service plan price. Right now I pay $30 for 3000 anytime minutes, unlimited text message, unlimited data transfer, dial-up internet through EV-DO, and unlimited Power Vision, so in Sprint has taken care of me. But I just wanted to put this out there, that people really try to over-analyze these things, because they are not going to make everybody happy, that is never possible, but for what some people need, they are the perfect combination.
