FBI to Battle Zombie Horde

You may not know that your computer is sending spam, being used as a pawn in coordinated internet attacks, hosting illegal files, or otherwise part of the malware-distribution network known as the zombie horde. Some estimates peg the number of email spams sent each day at around 55 billion, the vast majority of which are sent by infected PCs, usually without any knowledge of it by their owner.

It's all part of what's known as a botnet, giant networks of malware-infected PCs that act as slaves to a master controller via the internet. These PCs, called zombies, are perhaps the biggest security threat on the internet today.

And now the FBI wants to do something about it. How? It's directly contacting a million PC owners to let them know what they ought to have known all along: That their computers are infected and are being hijacked for nefarious uses. The goal is to help track down the source of these infections and put the hackers responsible behind bars. "Operation Bot Roast" (love the name) has already led to the arrest of three scammers.

The feds have offered the same general advice that I do to those infected: Protect yourself against malware and viruses by using the appropriate security tools, and take extra precautions if you find your PC running slowly or sending emails you didn't create (check your Sent Items folder!).

So how are we to know if the FBI contacts us that the contact is legit---really from the FBI and not from someone phishing for info? How will the FBI contact people about this problem?

Wow, the FBI knows the phone numbers for the people who own these PCs! Can you spell BIG BROTHER...

man, i had to educate myself about all of this when spyware/malware/adware was new, (new to me anyway). i always ran anti-virus but took steps to eliminate spyware too. it's just a shame that individuals don't pay more attention to their PC's. it's a bit of learning curve for the point and clickers, but not that big of a deal. i know those infected would enjoy their puters more if they made the effort to clean them up. i talk to people all the time who are obviously horribly infected with ad/spy/mal, and they show very little interest, or understanding, of the problem. it really is the individuals responsiblility, i think.

Scary! I do NOT want the FBI calling me for ANY reason, if my computer is infected, it's NONE of their friggin business. I use Spybot Search & Destroy and for antivirus I use "ANTIVIR". I haven't had spyware/malware or any other virus EVER when using these two. My brother has had several, and he wasn't using my one-two punch. FBI? How in the heck do they have your phone number based on a spam? OMG, this country is turning to feces.

Finally, they should have done something like that 10 years ago. We can only hope that authorities in other countries try the same.

Free spyware removing programs are Spybot (my favorite)and Adaware. Find them both at Download.com. They will coexist happily on your machine so run them both periodically. Spyware is much worse then bots. Spyware can allow someone to take over yoiur machine and record everything you do: every site you visit, every keystroke you type in. If that isn't scary I don't know what is.

You know how I avoid being a zombie? Using a mac. No spyware, no viruses, and no anti-virus software.

Learn how to use a computer properly or don't use it at all. There goes more tax $$ spent on the people who are too ignorant to know if they are infected or not. Not sure consult a computer professional...

If you use IE7 or Outlook (any kind) then notice how they get "updates" all the time. Micro$oft does NOT know anything about keeping us (the consumer) safe. I have to spend money on AV/Firewall programs to do it for me. I have an Apple iMac too and it does not have any AV programs. Is it just me or do others think the same, hacks/malware programmers use a MACINTOSH to write the programs running a virtual Micro$soft environment. The mac is UNIX, so it is SECURE. Linux is secure too. Micro$soft just doesn't care about the consumer EXCEPT for getting your's and my MONEY.

Wow! I am so glad you did this article. One day my computer went nuts, all of a sudden pop-ups started appearing and tiling all over my screen. My computer was running slow slow and keeps loading and working without me doing anything. It acts like it has a host but I dont know how to stop it or find out what has happened to it. Help?

One very easy way to determine if your computer is infected would be to connect to the internet, open your usual programs (i.e., Internet Explorer, Outlook, etc.), and leave your computer idle for a couple of hours. Then, open your internet connection activity (you can do this by clicking on the PC icon in the taskbar) and looking to see how many bytes of information were sent from your computer. If you haven't gone to any websites, then the number of sent bytes should be very low, probably less than 1000 bytes. (Keep in mind that an average spam email would probably be 5-10 K Bytes.) This would be a fairly easy way, but, like other users on this forum, I am frustrated that the FBI and the media don't specify what types of programs are in use on an infected machine when the spam emails are being sent. Regarding venomous_bird's question about how the FBI can find out someone's phone number: they can access the log files for the main servers that run the internet and look at which I.P. addresses are sending the most content to the server and what type of content is being sent, based on the structure of the data. The FBI then checks which internet service provider has that address, and then the FBI can get that customer's name and address.

Regarding kbaisley99's comment about the install-base of non-M$: These browsers share a common trait that M$ malware doesnt - they run tighter, more secure code than M$.

How stupid. This is not a MicroSoft problem son. The spammers will simply move over to Safari and Opera.

As if we weren't already tearing our hair out over tech support. I get enough spam weekly to believe this is true.
