File under barely-substantiated rumor: Apple may be working already on a cheaper version of the iPhone, addressing the #1 complaint that users considering purchasing the device have voiced so far.
At $499 to $599 (plus service fees), the iPhone isn't cheap. American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu says that Apple recognizes this and is reacting to the market, just as it did when it rolled out the iPod Mini/Nano and iPod Shuffle products, filling a need for consumers who don't need all the bells and whistles of the full-blown iPhone.
On the other hand, bells and whistles are what the iPhone is all about. Do consumers really want a phone with a fancy interface that doesn't do all the cool stuff the first-generation iPhone is designed to do? Say, strip out web browsing, cut storage space down to 1GB, and remove the camera? Trimming out many of the other elements of the iPhone's operating system (like, say, its voice mail system) won't really reduce the cost of the phone, since Apple developed and already owns those components. It just doesn't save money by eliminating them.
The more I think about it, the more I have trouble finding things in iPhone that Apple could easily cut. In fact, the market on the whole has already been clamoring for Apple to address iPhone's shortcomings (lack of 3G service and instant messaging and an non-replaceable battery, namely) and add more features, not less. Will people really thrill over a bare-bones iPhone that still costs $399? What Apple needs to do is just cut the price across the board if it really wants to get people slobbering over the thing, instead of just the tech elite.
What's the magic price point for iPhone as far as you're concerned?Â

leave it alone .You get what you pay for. I really want and can not wait to buy one .It does just about everything you want or need. If some one some thing cheaper go some place else. Volkswagen or Rolls
memory slot? whats the point? keep at LEAST a 4 gig drive in it... the battery is a problem however...., but the Razr has crappy battery life too.... people will still buy, (my mom is one of them) but i abuse my cell phone, so i have a strippy model nokia, a 5th g 30 gig i pod, and a nice digital camera.... and i surf the web at home.... and i am happy with that
My wife and I bought Blackjacks ($72 at Sam's Club with contract extension) last week upon final release of the ridiculous $500-600 iPhone price tag. I am interested in the phone, but give it a year and prices will fall just as they did on iPod. The "brick" 1st gen iPod was $499, and my newest nano was $149 (same memory size too.) All of us know someone who bought the Xbox 360 or PS3 on Ebay for $1000, but the majority will wait for sane prices.
Why should I pay a dime of $149.99? And with NO memory slot and no user replaceable battery? Surely you jest.
What is the big deal about the Iphone. I've been using a Sony Ericcson p800 since about '01 or '02. It's a touch screen, pda, mp3 player (when there was no ipods, etc.) camera, and totally programable and uses memory sticks. I now use a p990i which is the same phone but on "steroids." Much more powerful and functional. Check them out. P800's can be had on ebay for less than 200. Granted the software isn't as hip on the sony as the iphone but it is touch screen and has been around for a long time. And the newer one, the p990i does more and it costs about 500.
Pshhhhh it's still a deal at the OG price. People have been paying more for less for years...
i would go around 250-300 max when it comes out then after a while lower it down to like 150 or 200
It will go down.
NO WAY! I wouldnt pay over 100 for the thing. But then again i just see the iphone as a glorified blackberry(which i think is a useless brick anyway). I like how they try to put all features in one but at that price. My razr is fine for what i need, mp3s, videos, video/photo camera and a phone. Not to mention the sharing with bluetooth what else could you ask for. I'm not quite sure why apple is always making things so expensive for no reason. If the prices on their products were half of what they are now i know probably about 100+ people that would buy them. I cant see spending that much money on their electronics.
memory slot, user replacable battery, built-in WiFi. $200 - that's what I paid for my Treo
i will just stick with my blackberry
iphones are great for music lovers because having an Ipod and cellular phone in one is much easier to be brought anywhere at the same time...but the price is to high as if i am buying a new set of audio component system.
I wondered what the advertised hype was all about the Iphone, and how some people went crazy over it. I am glad for reading the comments and reviews on this subject. By reading this subject gives me and idea of what the Iphone can or can't do.
ill personally stick with my nokia N800 seeing as how i can get a wifi signal just about anywhere and make free calls on skype. EFF THE IPHONE!!!!!!!
Needs to be Under $250 expansion slot removable battery able to use with ANY thing besides itunes works with rhapsody oh wait thats my creative zen and nokia 770 internet tablet. thanks anyway apple.
Way to expensive, solitary source, built in spyware - don't want it at all.

I could care less about the price. Unless they release a SDK for it that allows me to write a program that can use Bluetooth, or release a Java JVM that uses JSR-82 that people can publicly write programs for, the iPhone is nothing but an expensive brick. I also wouldnt buy it if they stripped out what makes the iPhone the iPhone. It wouldnt be the same. The iPhone as it is has the bare minimum of what I would want in a cellphone.
