First iPhone Reviews Arrive, And They're Aglow With Praise

You've gotta be someone special to get an iPhone early. How special? You have to either be Walt Mossberg or David Pogue, of the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, respectively. So while the rest of us writers wait like baby birds for mommy to come back to the nest with a little bit of pre-chewed worm in the form of a reviewable iPhone, we get to see what the big guns have to say about the thing, officially and on the record. The verdict: These guys love it. What else did you expect?

Mossberg is the more enthusiastic of the two. He calls it a "beautiful and breakthrough handheld computer" (note: not a phone), "sets a new bar," and has a whole thesaurus full of superlatives for the phone's various features, all of which he says are the best he's ever tested, etc. etc.

Mossberg initially had a lot of trouble, as I expect many people will, with the virtual keyboard. After three days he says he was ready to "throw it out the window," but after five days he had grown to love it. Did Steve Jobs visit on day four, I wonder? His only "real drawback" is that it's an AT&T-only device. It's locked so that you can't even put in your own GSM SIM card. And AT&T's EDGE service, he complains (and as I have pointed out repeatedly), is just too slow for hard-core use.

Pogue is a tiny bit more critical, but has many of the same points as Mossberg, only amplified. The glass screen doesn't scratch as has been feared, and it's fast and beautiful and he wants it to bear his children. He loves the voice mail system, but complains that doing simple things like making a call still require a lot of button presses. Like Mossberg, he adores the web browser, but Pogue complains that battery life isn't as great as Apple has promised, especially with video. He also complains about the lack of voice dialing, instant messaging, and a memory card slot (which is odd, because no Apple product, ever, has had a memory card slot).

Pogue notes, interestingly, that when you buy a 4GB or 8GB iPhone, remember that 700MB of that will be consumed with the iPhone's operating system. Funny, I never thought about that... And like Mossberg, his big complaint is the keyboard, only magnified: "The BlackBerry won't be going away anytime soon," he says. And apparently Pogue absolutely hates the AT&T wireless network.

So there you have it. Oh, and if you want the full review with fewer long words, you can see what USA Today has to say.

No big surprises in any of this, to be honest. Looks like the two big sticking points will be the things that have worried people all along: The pokey AT&T network and that next-gen keyboard. Either you're going to get the hang of it, or you're not. But give it a week before you give up on the thing. The impatient may be better off waiting for iPhone 2.0.

And yes, I'm still waiting for mine to review... stay tuned.

I've had Cingular/new at&t for years..never had a problem and pay WAY less than my Verizon-cult-member friends. I'll still wait for Gen2 on the iPhone, but WOO HOO! It's here. PS It IS a phone...not a super-computer, not an office of workers...let's not forget that, folks.

Sounds like a great product... I want one bad... Unfortunately its only available for ATT customers and their network is NON-EXISTANT here...

I agree with the above. Mac's don't get virus', their opperating system just doesn't allow it. I think it will be more reliable than other devices of the same out there.

The real drawback for me is the fact that it only works with at&t. I have verizon and probably will never switch, even if that means that i wont get a chance to buy an iphone. Id say give it a month and the flaws or problems will show. Ifd i were ever to get one i would wait for the 2nd or 3rd gen. or if they allow other carriers to sell it (which would be in apples best intrest down the road).

Escape the trendy panic factor and fanboi gotta have it. Helio makes a great phone called the Ocean that has a better all unlimited plan, faster network and great tech support. I bailed on AT&T during our 30 day trial period and went with Helio. As for the IPhone, it's the new pet rock and as stated above, has so many expectations it'f failure is guarenteed.

What a bunch of sour grapes. Apple is introducing new technology. The first iPods were not that great either... but you have to start somewhere. Do you guys think Vista is flawless? How about the Zune? And in both of those cases, Microsoft is really just copying Apple. While I will agree that the iPhone is far from perfect... what is perfect? And perfect for what user? Getting real, the iPhone introduces new technology that will change the cell phone business, just as the iPod and iTunes changed music distribution. That is exciting. And I'm willing to cut Apple a little slack while they work on solving the various issues that will arise as they strive to create something truly new and innovative. Othewise... we'd all still be on DOS.

The only thing I don't like about the phone is is exclusivity with ATT Wireless. I don't like ATT's brand name on anything I deal with. Even when they became Cingular...it was still ATT to me. I'm wondering also what kind of security will it have with only 8gb of memory. It has the internet, does it come with AV installed. I'm just really curious about it more than anything

I am realy excited bout iphone. I have been waiting since january. I dont know if its as bad or as good as people are describing it, but i am getting it friday anyways cause it looks great. And u cant judge a thing from others people opinion. u will never know unless u try. So people need to quit winning and complaing and just look forward to it. And if u r not one of those who want to get it then just wait till people comments in a month or two and u will know. there is nothing to complain bout. U WILL EITHER LOVE IT OR HATE IT. CANT WAIT TILL FRIDAY.

...I already have a 'toy-phone'. I'll stick to my sidekick. I was considering getting this but the AT&T only service is more then enough to drive me away.

I agree with angelsnairwaves3. This is not a cheap product. Apple does their home work before they put out a product. I think we can all agree that the price tag does seem a bit high though. Another product for rich kids and yuppies. Oh well, what else is new.

Considering AT&T is a huge supporter of of Bush's initiatives to strip away our rights to privacy in support of the war on terror and are campaign contributors (as long as he passes legislation in their favor), I find it highly suspect when any independent company seeks to boost AT&T's promotion of anything. BOYCOTT!!!!

"making a call still require a lot of button presses" Make the same test on your phone! On my Nokia I had to make 10 button presses.
