You've gotta be someone special to get an iPhone early. How special? You have to either be Walt Mossberg or David Pogue, of the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, respectively. So while the rest of us writers wait like baby birds for mommy to come back to the nest with a little bit of pre-chewed worm in the form of a reviewable iPhone, we get to see what the big guns have to say about the thing, officially and on the record. The verdict: These guys love it. What else did you expect?
Mossberg is the more enthusiastic of the two. He calls it a "beautiful and breakthrough handheld computer" (note: not a phone), "sets a new bar," and has a whole thesaurus full of superlatives for the phone's various features, all of which he says are the best he's ever tested, etc. etc.
Mossberg initially had a lot of trouble, as I expect many people will, with the virtual keyboard. After three days he says he was ready to "throw it out the window," but after five days he had grown to love it. Did Steve Jobs visit on day four, I wonder? His only "real drawback" is that it's an AT&T-only device. It's locked so that you can't even put in your own GSM SIM card. And AT&T's EDGE service, he complains (and as I have pointed out repeatedly), is just too slow for hard-core use.
Pogue is a tiny bit more critical, but has many of the same points as Mossberg, only amplified. The glass screen doesn't scratch as has been feared, and it's fast and beautiful and he wants it to bear his children. He loves the voice mail system, but complains that doing simple things like making a call still require a lot of button presses. Like Mossberg, he adores the web browser, but Pogue complains that battery life isn't as great as Apple has promised, especially with video. He also complains about the lack of voice dialing, instant messaging, and a memory card slot (which is odd, because no Apple product, ever, has had a memory card slot).
Pogue notes, interestingly, that when you buy a 4GB or 8GB iPhone, remember that 700MB of that will be consumed with the iPhone's operating system. Funny, I never thought about that... And like Mossberg, his big complaint is the keyboard, only magnified: "The BlackBerry won't be going away anytime soon," he says. And apparently Pogue absolutely hates the AT&T wireless network.
So there you have it. Oh, and if you want the full review with fewer long words, you can see what USA Today has to say.
No big surprises in any of this, to be honest. Looks like the two big sticking points will be the things that have worried people all along: The pokey AT&T network and that next-gen keyboard. Either you're going to get the hang of it, or you're not. But give it a week before you give up on the thing. The impatient may be better off waiting for iPhone 2.0.
And yes, I'm still waiting for mine to review... stay tuned.

I have some issues with the iphone. I have never owned an ipod but my brother does. When all the hype started I just said alright it's nice, but these last two weeks have been preatty anoying but at the same time fun. It was annoying because all news were about the iphone and fun because I enjoyed watching the launch at youtube and other websites, how people went crazy about it. I would like to own one but first, I won't pay that much, I would need more space and finally and most important they have to come out with a CDMA version for verizon wireless otherwise don't hope that I will change company just for the phone. See ya' folks
The iPhone, all i can think of is why? I think phone is the wrong term for it as it may be used as a phone. it sounds though as if though the phone part is a secondary part of the whole package. You sure this is not a tiny computer with fancy and portable features? If i remember correctly a phone is something you communicate with vocally. My cell phone receives and sends verbal communications as well as text which i do not use. It does what i want from a phone. The internet and phone features are nice, but impractical for a phone. if i want to access the internet i will use a computer with a keyboard, and to take pictures of course a camera with high resolution, quality, and features. Apple is selling you a lot of marketing and trying to create a new market, and has done so, but it will fade especially when security issues become more and more of a problem. i do not look for this product to be as valuable as it initially seems. Besides this product being overpriced, so is the service, being exclusively offered by AT&T. randy
Do you people even know what you are talking about? AT&T isn't the same company that they were 3 or 4 years ago. Here is a little education. Southwestern Bell who already owned 51% of Cingular bought AT&T. Southwestern Bell decided to keep the AT&T name because it was a better known world wide name. Southwestern Bell/The NEW AT&T then bought Bell South who owned the other 49% of Cingular. Then Southwestern Bell/The NEW AT&T decided to put everything under the same name. Apple partnered with the largest cellular provider in the USA The NEW AT&T. The NEW AT&T will give you great service. This is NOT the old AT&T!!! The Iphone is a great product and The NEW AT&T will provide you the best sevice in the business hands down!!!! Verizon and T-Mobile are just the red headed step brother that wishes they could keep up!!
LOL parfive743, you still haven't given one solid reason to pay $600.00, but thanks for the history lesson. AT & T still nickel and dime you to death on 2 year basis. CYA at the AT & T booth in what ever mall you work dude...
i think the iphone is stupid. everyone already seems to have averything that is already on the phone.
I couldn't love my iPhone more if I'd designed it myself. Apple definitely has redefined the industry. No big surprise there, as Apple is always forging the way with creative designs. The iPhone is everything I'd hoped it would be and more. I am a small business owner and am always on the go. The iPhone enables me to keep in touch in different ways with my clients while I'm on the road. The iPhone is by far one of the coolest things I've seen in a long time. Way to go, Apple. You've got yet another feather to add to your cap. Excuse me while I go watch (on my iPhone) my Apple stock go up.
angelsnairwaves3, I'm afraid you might be mistaken, because sooner or later, SOMEONE WILL figure out a way to create a virus. It's inevitable. You're going to tell me that just because it's a "holier than thou" MAC supported device that it's not vulnerable? Just wait. Apple has a whole team of tech support peeps who are probably biting their nails hoping it doesn't happen, but somewhere out there is someone smart enough to create mass Iphone hysteria.
Dear Steve Jobs, Thank you so much! It has been widely rumored for months, and now it finally arrived, I am thrilled with my new IPHONE! We have to admit it’s quite lovely, the sleek, minimalist design it is overwhelming, the vivid display looks amazing, fun interface for navigating multimedia, terrific Web browser, syncs well, the functions flow seamlessly into each other. Overall, in despite of the high price, as predicted the IPhone is a revolutionary success, and I was not reluctant for a second to cancel my contract with T-Mobile. I am pleased, and no regrets for jumping out off the fence and get the IPHONE. I feel terribly sorry, for the ones that can’t afford it, and chooses to speculate posting undesirable reviews. Might I Add that I love my Phone... and before I got the Iphone I never owned anything from apple, so I'm no apple groupie.... The keyboard is fantastic if you ask me I can type faster with 1 hand than I can with to, not to mention you could use to hands on it....so I don't get many of your concerns because most of you that complain has never even used one. I admit it's not for everyone, but what phone is... You got Sidekick lovers but I hate it because it’s too big and heavy...but I would never diss anyone for wanting a sidekick, what works for you may not work for me and that is a good thing. That is why we have options. my phone is worth all the money I spent on it, I don’t even have complaints because u can access your Im's through the safari.....I can make my own ring tones, and my outlook express works wonderful on it.... yeah edge may be slow but no slower than some folks cheap versions of DSL. But the phone is good at picking up available WiFi spots so 8 times out of 10 you will be on wifi more than you will be on edge. So there is your objective review.......
well i love mine cant put it down my friends and family hate me for it as iphone is taking up most of my time love surfing the webb for new things was great during a recent trip to paris to stay in touch via email i turned on tje wi fi in the hotel free and just entered edge when i needed to view email then back out to save on charges.yes the battery life is poor it spoilt the experience when i had not got back home and the phone went dead so i am now on net looking at belt solar battery charger has anyone bought it so far comments please angel
p.s has anyone also tried the touch pen that helps with typing especially you girls out there with long nails the magnifyer can be hid and can be difficult still love it though especially taking pics from eiffle tower on new years night and sending to my buddy in australia in real time from the tower and this morning while uk snow hit the ground sending to warm oz in real time what better way to keep a friendship going. The apple mac team are really helpful when problems occur. would like a fancy case for mine any ideas please thanks for sharing.

Wow a $600.00 that really doesn't do much but make Apple and At&t rich! This thing runs on EDGE, that would mean that every page you visit would take like 30 sec. to load. The touch screen keyboard takes to long to text because you can only type on it with ONE finger.. it's no blackberry. Reception on the phone is full on CRAP. You have to sign up for 2 years with at&t in order to use it.. even as an IPOD. The cheapest plan they can offer is $60 a month plus activation and other fees. Those who bought the phone is already feeling the burn, they can't even use the darn thing. It makes a great paper weight I heard..lol!
