You've gotta be someone special to get an iPhone early. How special? You have to either be Walt Mossberg or David Pogue, of the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, respectively. So while the rest of us writers wait like baby birds for mommy to come back to the nest with a little bit of pre-chewed worm in the form of a reviewable iPhone, we get to see what the big guns have to say about the thing, officially and on the record. The verdict: These guys love it. What else did you expect?
Mossberg is the more enthusiastic of the two. He calls it a "beautiful and breakthrough handheld computer" (note: not a phone), "sets a new bar," and has a whole thesaurus full of superlatives for the phone's various features, all of which he says are the best he's ever tested, etc. etc.
Mossberg initially had a lot of trouble, as I expect many people will, with the virtual keyboard. After three days he says he was ready to "throw it out the window," but after five days he had grown to love it. Did Steve Jobs visit on day four, I wonder? His only "real drawback" is that it's an AT&T-only device. It's locked so that you can't even put in your own GSM SIM card. And AT&T's EDGE service, he complains (and as I have pointed out repeatedly), is just too slow for hard-core use.
Pogue is a tiny bit more critical, but has many of the same points as Mossberg, only amplified. The glass screen doesn't scratch as has been feared, and it's fast and beautiful and he wants it to bear his children. He loves the voice mail system, but complains that doing simple things like making a call still require a lot of button presses. Like Mossberg, he adores the web browser, but Pogue complains that battery life isn't as great as Apple has promised, especially with video. He also complains about the lack of voice dialing, instant messaging, and a memory card slot (which is odd, because no Apple product, ever, has had a memory card slot).
Pogue notes, interestingly, that when you buy a 4GB or 8GB iPhone, remember that 700MB of that will be consumed with the iPhone's operating system. Funny, I never thought about that... And like Mossberg, his big complaint is the keyboard, only magnified: "The BlackBerry won't be going away anytime soon," he says. And apparently Pogue absolutely hates the AT&T wireless network.
So there you have it. Oh, and if you want the full review with fewer long words, you can see what USA Today has to say.
No big surprises in any of this, to be honest. Looks like the two big sticking points will be the things that have worried people all along: The pokey AT&T network and that next-gen keyboard. Either you're going to get the hang of it, or you're not. But give it a week before you give up on the thing. The impatient may be better off waiting for iPhone 2.0.
And yes, I'm still waiting for mine to review... stay tuned.

Stick with, or get Verizon Wireless. I have never had an issue with them, and I have had AT&T, Nextel, and Cingular(all of which were horrible services) over the years. I NEVER lost service with Verizon. And everytime I have called customer service they have been very helpful. Sometimes even offering me better deals without me even asking.
the article didnt even show up so i know nothing about it
Why is Yahoo! starting with negative headlines? Yesterday it was about high service charges but when you read the article they are only about $10-$15 more than most carriers AND include unlimited online! That's a good deal. Yahoo needs to quit it's obvious anti-Apple campaign and be more even handed in choice of headlines as they don't reflect the tenor of the actual articles they link to.
Macs just don't get viruses. Remember the commercial? It just works.
Yuppies have an expensive phone to not work but look good with. Everything the untalented and over paid wanted in a phone!
"there wont be a virus its made by mac the greatest computer company around today " What do you think all of those updates are for on your mac?
That is why that have a very limited slice of the pie? Because they are the greatest company.....dreamland...Wake up.... The more widely accepted the IPhone is, the more they hit the mass market, the more attention is will get form the hackers wanting to exploit it.
The negative comments obviously come from bozos who use Microsoft Windows/PCs. I've been a MAC user for 20 years and NEVER had a quality issue (unlike my horrifying experiences with DELL, COMPAQ and other PCs at work). This is APPLE !!! The iPhone uses the same operating system as the MAC ... the OS X. And its the best among any operating system in the PC world and about to get better. In short, I can't wait to get an iPhone because I know I will not be disappointed. MAC Systems are the best ... how can the iPhone be other than fabulous!!
$60/month subscription for 2 years, no GPS, no UMTS, phbbbbt. I'll get the next one.
C'mon, the title of the article says "... Aglow With Praise" but when you actually read the article they seemed to have more complaints than praises.
Every reviewer complains about the AT&T network... being pokey and slow... so what networks are fast? Cingular is now AT&T, so TMobile??? What about Sprint or Verizon? If this thing is so data rich, why not seek to put it on a fast network?
No one will buy i think. Only celebrities and other rich people. To much money to send for us common folk.
AT&T Wireless absolutely STINKS in New York City and environns
Another over priced toy with limited power from the leader in over priced toys that go with my shoes APPLE!
Just wait until these overpriced crap phones get hit with a replicating virus. $600 each down the drain, or old Steve will charge $300 to reload the systems.
I'm a MAC man, and have been my whole life, but the problem with MAC is the problem with MS -- you have to live in their world, and play by their rules, in this case, a phone that only works with one phone company? I don't care if it drove my car home for me and gave me a sponge bath at night, what good is a phone that only works with one phone company??
There is not a concern about a virus with this phone. People do make viruses for Macintosh, but there is little point. If you want to be destructive you would keep with the Windows platform because more people use it. At 500 a pop, there is little reason to exploit weaknesses until there are more people using it. As far as functionality, I do not think that it will bring anything to the table that will warrant the price tag.
Is AT&T going to be the only service for th Iphone ever? Until that changes, I don't see the Iphone turning many heads.
We need something like this to raise the bar for phones, etc. Post #4 apparently went to Hilton High School, check your spelling on "incedent" Einstein.
