First iPhone Reviews Arrive, And They're Aglow With Praise

You've gotta be someone special to get an iPhone early. How special? You have to either be Walt Mossberg or David Pogue, of the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, respectively. So while the rest of us writers wait like baby birds for mommy to come back to the nest with a little bit of pre-chewed worm in the form of a reviewable iPhone, we get to see what the big guns have to say about the thing, officially and on the record. The verdict: These guys love it. What else did you expect?

Mossberg is the more enthusiastic of the two. He calls it a "beautiful and breakthrough handheld computer" (note: not a phone), "sets a new bar," and has a whole thesaurus full of superlatives for the phone's various features, all of which he says are the best he's ever tested, etc. etc.

Mossberg initially had a lot of trouble, as I expect many people will, with the virtual keyboard. After three days he says he was ready to "throw it out the window," but after five days he had grown to love it. Did Steve Jobs visit on day four, I wonder? His only "real drawback" is that it's an AT&T-only device. It's locked so that you can't even put in your own GSM SIM card. And AT&T's EDGE service, he complains (and as I have pointed out repeatedly), is just too slow for hard-core use.

Pogue is a tiny bit more critical, but has many of the same points as Mossberg, only amplified. The glass screen doesn't scratch as has been feared, and it's fast and beautiful and he wants it to bear his children. He loves the voice mail system, but complains that doing simple things like making a call still require a lot of button presses. Like Mossberg, he adores the web browser, but Pogue complains that battery life isn't as great as Apple has promised, especially with video. He also complains about the lack of voice dialing, instant messaging, and a memory card slot (which is odd, because no Apple product, ever, has had a memory card slot).

Pogue notes, interestingly, that when you buy a 4GB or 8GB iPhone, remember that 700MB of that will be consumed with the iPhone's operating system. Funny, I never thought about that... And like Mossberg, his big complaint is the keyboard, only magnified: "The BlackBerry won't be going away anytime soon," he says. And apparently Pogue absolutely hates the AT&T wireless network.

So there you have it. Oh, and if you want the full review with fewer long words, you can see what USA Today has to say.

No big surprises in any of this, to be honest. Looks like the two big sticking points will be the things that have worried people all along: The pokey AT&T network and that next-gen keyboard. Either you're going to get the hang of it, or you're not. But give it a week before you give up on the thing. The impatient may be better off waiting for iPhone 2.0.

And yes, I'm still waiting for mine to review... stay tuned.

I do not think its about the NEGATIVE or POSITIVE comments. Its about a big bulky useless phone. Everything that the average person needs to do with a phone (i.e.Camera,phone,MP3,Video, some web, games) can be done with less inexpensive phones. Unless they want to be "cool" and "in" and show off that they spent $600 on a useless phone. I do know...what do you guys think?

I personaly thibk that Aple iPhone is no better than any sonyericson phone with touch screen. I own Nokia N95 and beside terible battery life it's amazing phone. I pait for it 950 euros and it works with European HDSPA. Point is that iPhone is not too expencive if you won't a nice design. But if you wont multimedia computer buy N95!!!! *note i live in a small poor country in Europe, don't have a lot of many but when it cames to buying something like this......... Many well spent, if you look for best buisness phone with computer features 1. Nokia N95 2. Microsoft based phone!

responding to devinfish, supporting angelsnairwaves3. As a mac user i have experienced that they do not pose safety threats like PC. bc of their operating system code it makes it very diffcult for viruses to be written. Where as Ms-DOS is farely simple and well known. (not that i know but programmers do) I have never had to install an antivirus on my apple computers nor had a virus. I haven't even had my computer crash except for that one time when it literally fell to the floor. I believe that steve JObs has thought this phone through and has takin the necessary precautions but realize this too... think how far the iPod has advanced in 4 years(?). For christmas my 7th grade year by mac loving parents gave me the 1st generation iPod, a brick by todays standards, my 9th grade year I receieved an iPod mini. Im now a senior and longing for a nano but im sure something better will come out.. or ill just supplement my want with the iPhone. :D

Also I do not see the big deal, it sounds like a BlackBerry but with a mp3 player. Also the UpStage has internet, phone, digital camera and a mp3 player. This sounds like if you buy it you are buying the apple logo.

Don't people ever learn? Never buy the first model of any electronic product. There will likely be a much better model out in 6-8 months. I'm waiting to see what hacks people use on their iPhones. Not back stuff. Something similar to what people do to their Nintendo DS or PSP. A friend of mine has a really great Bleach motif on his PSP, complete with custom intro. :D

With that kind of a price tag, no way would I get one.

Sorry, but I want my phone to be a phone. You know, to call people when I need to talk to them. I don't need my phone to entertain me, send text messages (on a really silly little keyboard), and do a myriad of other pointless things that have no relation to the fact that it is SUPPOSED TO BE A PHONE! Last I checked, you can get cell phones for free at most cell companies. Why pay $500? Got a lot of better things I can buy for $500.

I received the 1st Gen. Ipod as an unexpected gift. Every body thought it was way overpriced and kinda stupid. I loved it. Even a year later reviews were still negative .. so this phone with good reviews out-the-gate must be fabulous.

I agree the last mac virus there was, was in the OS 9 software and that was... 99?

BlackBerry has its unique infrastructure to support its security, that is the key reason corporate users like it; iPhone doesn't has that similar infrastructure, it is still a well designed fancy phone. Touchscreen, it is just a input equipment, right? Does it change anything fundermental?

The Fabergé Egg of phones for mindless style fools and self made Cleopatra's to accesorize their pointless life!

"there wont be a virus its made by mac the greatest computer company around today." the only reason mac's dont get viruses is because no one is going to waste their time making a virus that will only hurt like 2% of the population...2% of the population who only bought their mac to "look cool." you cant even do anything good with a mac except make movies and music; other than that, its almost pointless. anyway, about the phone...it looks pretty cool, and it's just going to be a matter of opinion. i think a younger generation (18-30) is going to enjoy it a lot more than an older generation...

It is a partial computer. If you can check E-mail, browse the web in full size and color, you don't just make and take calls anymore! Beats a lot most cellular phones can do at this point. And for right now, YES, it is stuck in the AT&T network and costs more than most BlackBerry's, Treo's and even the Sidekick. Keep in mind some people are too into their technology, and will drop their carriers in a flash to try and "one-up" their friends. Let's see what happens once it comes out. ;)

i think the i phone will do well as did the ipod and will most likely stick around for a while but once people adjust to the phone and all then everything will be fine of course there will be glitches and what nots wrong w/it..but of course when i was shopping for a razr my sis goes "dont get it dan (her hubby) got one and he hates it" the one he got had issues with the battery mine on the other hand is perfect..his was one of the first ones made so there ya have it..

Does that mean a New Ipod generation coming soon?

  • 85 Posted by katielin04 on Thu Sep 3, 2009 4:47PM EDT Report Abuse

let's think about this virus thing, many iPods have a problem with locking up. Then if it doesn't reboot, you have to get a new one or pay lots of money to have a specialist fix it. I predict that the iPhone will be the same. Besides, if you have an iPod and a cell phone...what's the point? Or maybe you have a phone that plays mp3. iPhone will not be THAT popular, it's WAY too expensive. I will not be buying one, becuase Mac messed up my iPod, and i don't want to have to buy a second i Phone. This is rediculous, they have taken the iPhenomenon way too far.
