Good question!

Let's look at the iPod first: It's the market leader, and it gets all the attention, but why? While a lot of it comes down to savvy marketing and a rabid set of fans, the iPod is indeed a great MP3 player. For starters, the interface is great and has only improved over time. Using an iPod requires no reading of any manuals, and even technophobes often have no problem picking it up and immediately playing tunes. It's brain-dead simple, which has long been Apple's marching orders. The iPod also just looks cool, and GB for GB, they are typically the smallest and lightest players available.

The same praise goes for the iTunes software, which I think is even better than the iPod. From ripping CDs to picking playlists to sharing music with other computers in your office or home, using iTunes to manage your songs is far easier than any other music manager I've ever tried.

Now here's the big problem with all that: You can't use iTunes with any other portable player except the iPod. And you can't download music from the iTunes Music Store and play it using anything except an iPod or iTunes. Apple even pushes its own audio format, AAC, which is not widely supported by non-Apple devices (even non-DRM-protected music), though iTunes does support MP3 and other formats, too. In other words, if you jump into Apple's version of the world of music, you might quickly get stuck there with no easy way out.

So what about the rest of the market? A quick search turns up nearly 500 players on the market, and that's probably not all of them. So why would you want to pick one instead of an iPod? Mainly it comes down to price and capacity. As widely noted, you can often get a competing product with the same capacity for less than you'd pay for an iPod. Often much less: The SanDisk Sansa m240 ($60) is about half the price of an iPod Nano ($120), both with 1GB of storage, and the Sansa also has an FM radio and an SD card slot which the iPod does not. The Creative Zen MicroPhoto offers 8GB of storage for $170. The highest-end Nano offers 4GB for $230 (though price cuts are undoubtedly imminent). Prices are closer on the standard iPod (with hard drive), but you'll still pay a bit of a premium for the Apple.

Even if you're not cheap, you still might want an alternative. As noted, you can't get an FM radio or voice recorder on an iPod, and some users really like these features.

Ultimately it's up to you: Even though they're more expensive and have fewer features, some people still prefer the iPod for its lightness and ease of use. Ultimately the decision is up to you.

Personally, I'm a fan of the SanDisk Sansa line, the Creative Zens, and the MobiBLU players . The MobiBLUs are actually the smallest in the world along with the new Apple iPod Shuffle, but the MobiBLU actually has a display; that's one pictured above. But day to day I use a good-old iPod.

I'm sure there are many vocal fans of iPods and competing devices out there. Let's hear your picks for what's best!

This was a cool little rundown on the different types of MP3 players out there (even if some of them are more like AAC players) Personally, I am a die-hard IPOD/Mac/Apple user and cant stand (or for that matter, use) anything else. (Oh God, don't let me near a windows; i'll accidentally destroy it) Well, i couldn't care less if something w/ twice as much capacity at a third of the cost, i'm MAC-MAN at my school (even the teachers come to me for help w/ Macs for gods sake) and proud to be it. Thanks for the update on the other guys though. It helped me realize how much better my system of choice really is. FINAL BLAZE My fire will burn forever.

I love Apple iPod, it's so cool! I've had it for almost a year now and haven't had any problems. My friend has an MP3 player (not iPod) and she's had it repaired 4 times now and she's had it for a year too. Apple is much better than others, just try it.

Well I wanted a MP3 player so my boss got me one to help drown out the loud lady in the cube next to me. Though it is a small iPod shuffle I love the compact size, I never found it a problem to use iTunes accept that it is a little slow to try to put about 500 hundred song into this thing. I have also been able to find a decent portable speaker system with it to use outside with friends or cleaning around the house.

I bought a RCA Lyra and love it for several reasons. 1, the price, Ipod is OVERPRICED! Then, 2. they have you locked into buying their custom batteries for about $70. The batteries don't last long enough on a charge. The Lyra takes a AA and that lasts 20 hours! A Lyra does not hold as many songs but it will take SD memory. So, a lyra for $26 + $15 for a 2 gig SD card?

i have the mp3 posted at the top of the page its a Mobyblu Cube its awsome and its the best when you run, fits easly in your hand or in your shirt. ITs perfect for running. I had a cheap mp3 player that was not worth the 30 I spent. Upon getting enough I bought my mp3 player its only a 1 gig but I lvoe it. I heard the mobi blu came out with a 2 gig. I recomend it all the way if you want something athletic and is not big like the Ipod. Or just somthing simple to slipinside of you pocket.

over my months of using an mp3 player daily, here are some important intangible considerations. 1. mp3 player is better with an external standard recharble Ni-Mh or Lithium battery. Constant recharging eventually lessens the battery's duration. Its usually a good idea to charge a battery when its COMPLETELY DRAINED. If you have an MP3 player with a built in battery, you will have to drain it all the way and you might be in the middle of a boring trip when that happens. I always carry spare rechargeable AAA's. and it comes in handy. 2. better with a song display. If i want the song to be a mystery, i want the option of not having to look. 3. headset wires usually break at the jack area. 4. Sound quality is a great consideration but VOLUME is more crucial. Have you had those days your in a noisy place or you just wanted to drown out that music you really hate while at the gym? Consider testing different headsets on the SAME mp3 player. Note:the older ipods can often have HIGHER OUTPUT LEVELS compared to newer models. consider: headset volume, earplug types, output level of mp3 player.

i think ipod is gimmickie with a name of apple behind. but i wont knock it. i just recently bought the sandisk for my niece for xmas. i took the time to put some music on it and i was sorta impressed with it. i dont know about the charging procedures for other mp3's but all i did was plug it in to my usb connection n it charged up while i put music on it. i sorta toyed with it i didnt do alot else due to it being her xmas gift i would wind up keeping it. lol. ive have a few experiences with these players and the dell one i had purchased 2 different times and they both crapped up...

Chris, at the time of this writing, the Zune had not come out. Now that I own the Zune, I deff like it. First off, the screen is nice and big, and bright. Second, the software that you have to use is pretty easy to use. The controls of the unit itself are pretty straight forward and are easy to navigate while walking. I know the Zune doesn't support alot of media, but with all my files being MP3's or WMA's, it is nothing that I'm worried about. The wireless transfer is great, because my brother and I trade alot of photos with the players. I will always go with a Zune before a iPod

Creative Zen is neither creative nor does it envoke Zen in any manner. I bought a Zen micro - it stopped working after two weeks. Since it was frozen solid I was not able to download new software for it. Customer service did not understand English and so I fought with them for two months. Finally they agreed to fix it...for a price. Of course, it was now out of warrenty. I found from an independent web site that this was a known problem and deduced that this company sent me a unit with outdated software and no warning!!! One year later I got it back and used it successfully - well, the sliding touch key pad is difficult to adjust to and it is easy to get unwanted functions - anyway, I used it for 1 month and then dropped it from waist height. I was astonished to find it was broken and unfixable. My friends with iPods have dropped their MP3s many times without any problems. This was a waste of my money and time. Do not even consider buying anything from this company - they are not ethical and their customer service department is the worst I have ever encountered.
