Good question!
Let's look at the iPod first: It's the market leader, and it gets all the attention, but why? While a lot of it comes down to savvy marketing and a rabid set of fans, the iPod is indeed a great MP3 player. For starters, the interface is great and has only improved over time. Using an iPod requires no reading of any manuals, and even technophobes often have no problem picking it up and immediately playing tunes. It's brain-dead simple, which has long been Apple's marching orders. The iPod also just looks cool, and GB for GB, they are typically the smallest and lightest players available.
The same praise goes for the iTunes software, which I think is even better than the iPod. From ripping CDs to picking playlists to sharing music with other computers in your office or home, using iTunes to manage your songs is far easier than any other music manager I've ever tried.
Now here's the big problem with all that: You can't use iTunes with any other portable player except the iPod. And you can't download music from the iTunes Music Store and play it using anything except an iPod or iTunes. Apple even pushes its own audio format, AAC, which is not widely supported by non-Apple devices (even non-DRM-protected music), though iTunes does support MP3 and other formats, too. In other words, if you jump into Apple's version of the world of music, you might quickly get stuck there with no easy way out.
So what about the rest of the market? A quick search turns up nearly 500 players on the market, and that's probably not all of them. So why would you want to pick one instead of an iPod? Mainly it comes down to price and capacity. As widely noted, you can often get a competing product with the same capacity for less than you'd pay for an iPod. Often much less: The SanDisk Sansa m240 ($60) is about half the price of an iPod Nano ($120), both with 1GB of storage, and the Sansa also has an FM radio and an SD card slot which the iPod does not. The Creative Zen MicroPhoto offers 8GB of storage for $170. The highest-end Nano offers 4GB for $230 (though price cuts are undoubtedly imminent). Prices are closer on the standard iPod (with hard drive), but you'll still pay a bit of a premium for the Apple.
Even if you're not cheap, you still might want an alternative. As noted, you can't get an FM radio or voice recorder on an iPod, and some users really like these features.
Ultimately it's up to you: Even though they're more expensive and have fewer features, some people still prefer the iPod for its lightness and ease of use. Ultimately the decision is up to you.
Personally, I'm a fan of the SanDisk Sansa line, the Creative Zens, and the MobiBLU players . The MobiBLUs are actually the smallest in the world along with the new Apple iPod Shuffle, but the MobiBLU actually has a display; that's one pictured above. But day to day I use a good-old iPod.
I'm sure there are many vocal fans of iPods and competing devices out there. Let's hear your picks for what's best!

the sandisk sansa e200 series is also pretty good. i believe the e260 holds MORE music than an ipod nano. it may not look as "snazzy" but its smaller (but thicker).
read the review for iaudio x5/x5L at www.iaudio.com.or www.iaudiophile.net... this player has tons of features that ipod doesn't have including FM..and one thing i like about this player is i can customize it the way i want it...and it sounds great...check it out guys...
Anyone looking to Creative for their FM recording capabilities should look elsewhere. Their latest firmware versions remove FM recording from ALL of their products. A technical support person said "I will need you to know that due to licensing policy, the recording feature has been taken out." You either use an older firmware or live without FM recording. That was the #1 reason I bought a Creative Muvo TX FM and was about to buy a Nano Plus for additional flash memory, but I'm now going to go with a different brand.
I want to buy an MP3 player to use in my car and I would prefer to not buy an iPod, like everyone else, but I know that all the car adapters that plug into the headphone jack of the iPod have terrible sound quality. I'm afraid of getting another brand and having to use a car adaptor that uses the headphone output b/c it will likely sound as bad. Do any of the other brands have FM adapters that plug into an output that will give me better quality (like the ones that plug into the bottom of the iPod)?
sony bean is awesome and smaller and cheaper try it
IRiver mp3 players have awesome sound quality plus an FM radio. You can record directly from your built in radio. For small, flash memory irivers, There is a special cord that is included which lets you plug one side into the mp3 player, and one into the sound source (that has a headphone jack) that you want to record.Plus I rivers have built in voice recorders. For Ipods, that is a 30 dollar accessory. Some of my friends have i pods and have complained about the battery losing internal power real fast. They now have to pay for a new one and they only had it for 6 months to a year. :/ IRivers are WAY better than IPods in my opinion for quality and price. Does it make sense to buy a 4 gig IPod for $250 when you can buy a 20 Gig iriver with FM radio, voice recording, over 30 sound quality presets (including SRS WOW plus a customizable sound preset),and that the music player also displays your jpeg and .txt files for only $230? Really...how much fun is an IPod?
The I-pod Is The Best Thing Out There!!! 30or 80 GB's Crazy But Awsome!!! You Can Also Whath Videos!!!!
I also have a 'my musix', and it is the best gadget I've ever bought for 70 bucks. I bought it primarily for the 1 gig sd card that it came with, but almost 2 years later, I've had no problems, and I use it 3-4 times a week. Looks like a lil piece of crap, but plays my music, and who cares if your player ONLY holds 1 gig of music? Hard drives as we know them belong in computers, not pockets.
I have a 40gb creative and 2 ipods, a mini and a 30 gb video. I like the ipods a lot more because there are a lot more accessories for them and because the battery lasts longer.
I have an iPod and a iPod Shuffle. They are both excellent items to purchase. People always complain that they dont work but maybe if you would learn how to use the item before complaining it would help out. or just read the directions, ahh america is getting lazy. I know some have problems but still not all of the complaints i've heard make sense. I know this sounds bad but still just purchase a warranty or something. My ipod broke down one day and the same day they gave me a new one and took my old one. How do you complain about that... So honestly I will stay with ipods even though they do cost more.
i have an ipod with 30gb i love it its awsome i think that it may be more expensive but it is worth it because it is easy to use and i think its really cute lol i have seen other mp3 plyers iand i really dont like them that much they are either to complicated or ugly or just plain NOT COOL i think that just cause it doesnt have radio and so on doesnt mean anything cause lately that came out for it you can now but the radio piece you put on your ipod to have radio so i think it koo cause i just got the speakers for it and they are awsome.. small and loud so i dont know if all mp3's have speakers or not but i know that ipod rocks.!!! :-)
I have an sandisk 1GB player and for the price I paid am very happy with the performance. The biddest advantage of my player is the fact that it uses 1(aaa) battery and you don't have to charge it from the computer. You can travel anywhere and not have to worry about loosing your charge.
I love my ipod it is the coolest thing I've ever had top line stuff
Update!!! this article needs an update on the Ipod specifications.
I have had to return 3 ipods (2 30GB models including the newer 30GB version and 1 60GB) due to battery problems. The longest battery life I received was just 3 hours max till I had to recharge. I feel the batteries are defective. Apple puts out a product that is not cheap, looks great, has great video and sound quality, but cannot produce or choose a battery that it claims lasts up to 14 hours on it's 30GB and 60GB models and does not have a built in FM tuner. Folks, something is very wrong here. Lets see some real good competition to give ipod a good run for their money and market share.
i love my ipod! mine has 30 gb! i love it
Ipods' Main advantage is that they have many more Speakers And other acssesories than other MP3 players.
Remember - one of the advantages with iPod is that it's not *just* about music. Theres lots of other types of digital content available for iPods which turn them from music players to city guides, and more, in an instant. At www.expodition.com you can download a variety of free guides - called Pod SnapShots - which can make your iPod invaluable when traveling!
I wish songs purchased on iTunes could be played with other players besides iPods. All these restrictions have a Microsoftish flavor I think. What this article didn't cover though, is whether or not music purchased from other sites can be played on the iPod and iTunes -- if so, just buy musice elsewhere and play it with iTunes. I choose to use iTunes v.s. any othee player because, I find it to be the best one that works for me. But HEY APPLE!! STEVE ... DUDE! I thought you were for the small guy -- what happened?

i love my ipod because it is so easy to use. i collect music and i am gradually getting it into my ipod (2600 songs right now). i teach government so i get some great podcasts for the classroom. i have a scion xb with the ipod radio and i can read text off my ipod on the radio dial so tuning is a snap, especially with playlists. there are a lot worse things than using apple itunes. i have had my ipod for a year and a half. i would do it again. i am not knocking other formats. it is just apple works well. i am confident as they upgrade itunes and come out with newer versions of itunes, they won't dump me on the side of the road. generally speaking, apple has been very good on compatibility, quality, and support.
