With Windows Vista's release finally upon us, it's normal to wonder what Microsoft's newest operating system actually has in store for the user.
What's so great about it? What's not so swell? And what are the new features that could possibly compel me to pay up to $400 to buy it? Well, whether you're going to pay that kind of cash is a question I've dug into in another post, but if you really want the scoop on Vista's most interesting features, well, read on.
Those are the big changes, but Vista of course offers tweaks in virtually every corner of the operating system. For more information (though biased), feel free to flip through Microsoft's marketing materials for more pictures and details.
To see if your current PC can handle Vista, run Microsoft's Vista Upgrade Advisor.
For some early thoughts on Vista, here's some commentary.

I HATE IT!!!!!!!!!
so I got a new PC;VISTA loaded;new printer/scanner etc.Did this so My daughter could have my old P.C.with XP for her school stuff.(she is in the second grade). So now I use the computer in her room and pray she can figure out how to use the new one with VISTA in my office.Forget re-loading any of the programs that you used to have and love;after hours on the phone;it ain't going to happen!
I just returned from a 4 hour seminar on Vista and Office 2007. Wow... especially Office has some amazing breakthrough features. I was very impressed. I'm excited about moving into this new technology. Thank God for Microsoft to keep us movin forward. Based on some of the comments posted.... if it was up to some of you out there, we would still be living in the dark ages.
Simply put Vista sucks, and anyone who states that Vista is anything other horrible, really has no idea of a what decednt OS should be.given xp has it's drawbacks, it's at least 1000% better than Vista, even before any service packs
I hear that windows Vista sucks.
Vista sucks! not only is it not compatible with anything yet, buts SOOOOOOO slow!. im taking it to my tech tomorrow to have XP put back.
Basically, What Apple does, Microsoft Immitates. It's been like that since the Mac OS system started in the 80's. The only irony here is this, the one's who innovate well are the ones who don't take the real credit. If I can remember very well what my brother says to me, "The world runs on MS Windows!"
Guys if you want Vista to even be worth while just go out and get two 8800gtx and SLI them, get a X6700, and get like 4gigs of ram...Not only will it be fast but makes any console graphics look the ugly retarded step sister...who is a 40 year old virgin...and even old man Jenkins wouldn't touch...
Thank you for the very helpful article. The laptop I purchased in December is supposed to be Vista capable, BUT...after running the compatability advisor (provided by your link) I have found more than a few issues I would have to deal with. (Believe it or not even with MS Office 2003, among about two dozen others of the hardware and software variety.) I won't be installing Vista for quite some time even though I am expecting the free software upgrade very soon. Razberries to Microsoft!
My friends say that Vista is not up to par with their equipment and they don't want to sheck out that kind of money for hardware upgrades either. Personally, I'm a MAC person and I thank God for this rock solid, foolproof, user friendly OS that receives regular upgrades. Just maybe we will see a large number finally going to the MAC. I have personally switched a lot of my friends over and they love it. I have nothing against pc's personally, but all I've owned are MACS and I have never had a crash or a virus. The few pc's I've used in office situations alway were experiencing crashes and other problems. I agree that Microsoft should have just upgrades XP with some new features. Robert
Why bring back Windows XP? It hasn't gone anywhere just yet? You can still buy Windows XP. Just ignore Windows Vista and pick yourself up a copy of XP. You will get more work done with Windows XP because it's what we've grew up using, we're used to it. Microsoft is causing companies to loose thousands of dollars in productivity by making people re-learn how to use the computer again. This is going to cause all kinds of problems. You can't say that "Hey remember when XP first came out, you were saying the same thing?" because XP had the same user interface. Now Vista, where's my File, Edit, Tools menu commands. If Microsoft chooses to ignore comments like yours and mine and chooses to have a "my way or the highway" attitude, this could spell an end to what was a great company.
And yeah, those two girls named Mac & Linux, they're looking really attractive right now.
I hope they made some improvement to Outlook. To put it bluntly their spam filters suck. You can easily block with Yahoo mail but not with Outlook.
I hate Vista with a passion. It's like using windows 95. Frequently locking up, frozen cursor, keeps losing dvd driver blah blah blah. A real dog!!
Actualy am enjoying Vista and try as much as posible to enjoy to the buttom but my VGA driver which is Intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics is not working well so if you can help me then Vista well be the best of all Windows
DOES VISTA HAVE EXCEL, WORD, ACCESS, & POWERPT LIKE XP PROFESSIONAL.
