With Windows Vista's release finally upon us, it's normal to wonder what Microsoft's newest operating system actually has in store for the user.
What's so great about it? What's not so swell? And what are the new features that could possibly compel me to pay up to $400 to buy it? Well, whether you're going to pay that kind of cash is a question I've dug into in another post, but if you really want the scoop on Vista's most interesting features, well, read on.
Those are the big changes, but Vista of course offers tweaks in virtually every corner of the operating system. For more information (though biased), feel free to flip through Microsoft's marketing materials for more pictures and details.
To see if your current PC can handle Vista, run Microsoft's Vista Upgrade Advisor.
For some early thoughts on Vista, here's some commentary.

Ouch 400 USD plus need to buy new Pc .
Great news on Vista. Looking at all the features, it seems like I already have them on my XP so I am good except for directx but that is for gaming only. No need to upgrade yet. Maybe in 1.5+ yrs.
Vista is a terrible upgrade. The biggest issue I have with it is that it includes DRM on an operating system level. You don't have the hardware that is supported with its "Trusted Computing" initiative? I hope you don't mind that it knocks down your media quality significantly to curb "improper use" Just do a search for DRM and Vista and you'll find a wealth of articles that go in depth about this issue.
You can check if your system is compatible going to this link http://www.cnet.com/4520-33_1-6671810-1.html?tag=one
I always try to avoid an early purchase of ANYTHING produced my Microsoft. At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated, "If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon." In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating: If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics: 1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash ... twice a day. 2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car. 3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason, you would simply accept this. 4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine. 5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on only five percent of the roads. 6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation" warning light. 7. The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before deploying. 8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key, and grabbed hold of the radio antenna. 9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car. 10. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.
I loved it when Apple released this GUI about 4-5 years ago (minus the compatibility problems). Hmm "gadgets" I guess widgets was already taken. About what you'd expect from Microsoft though= want the new OS? well you'll have to upgrade to a whole new computer.
This OS is complete garbage. Spend an hour on a MAC with MAC OSX 10.4.8 and u will notice that everything Vista has supposedly "created" has already been in use for over 2 years. Like the guys said before..there will be umpteen updates and security fixes, which do absolutely jack crap...(by the way has anyone seen the new Word viruses? evidence is just piling up against microsoft..) Do urself a favor and switch to an OS that is less resource extensive, more user friendly, more capable, and more stable..and did I mention that this OS IS 15BG!!!!! thats rediculous...Im not saying exactly mac, but even linux is better than this garbage. Although if u have a chance, u gotta be a dang 'de-de-dee' to not switch to mac. No viruses, clean cut, 2 versions, 1,000,000's possibilities at ur fingertips.
Oh Great, another new operating system from Microsoft so we can all go out and spend another thousand or so to keep up with Mr. Gate's need to take his wealth to another level. What happens when the rest of techno world gets as greedy as Gate's? Annual upgrades on our cars computer operating systems? Annual upgrades for our TV's remotes? How about Gates comes up with improvements that are compatible with what I bought last year? Who's watching this guy? Nobody.
Go to microsoft.com. Download and run the tool to determine if your system is Vista ready. It will tell if any of your hardware is not compatible.
Vista ROCKS! BUT,...If all you do is fire up you data and or word processor...corel...adobe...whatever...then stick with XP...or DOS 6.21 for that matter...hehe...
I'd hold out for Mac OSX Leopard in a month or so. It's going to give Vista a run for its money.
to me apple inc. will always do better. windows is really not getting there. so far so good. but no where near apple.
With the issues Wiseman brought up and now the references made in this article I will wait quite some time before I take the plunge. I'm very happy with XP thank you!!
For games they recommend 2 gigs of RAM, I only have 1 gig right now so I'd have to spend $100 for another stick. Now I hear my Audigy 4 card won't work properly because they rewrote the DirectSound API, so I'd have to spring more $$$ for a Sound Blaster X-Fi card (I'm not reverting back to onboard). So I'd have to spend about $400-500 for less reliable and buggier system. I'll pass.
Man am I glad I just bought a Mac
Hmmmm. "Gadgets", Glass looking interface.Sounds like Microsoft ripped off the Macintosh OS once again. With Macs able to run Windows better then the machines themselves, why wouldn't you go this route? Best of both worlds people!
Man am I glad I just bought a Mac
There is no place as of yet for Vista in a corporate setting. The cost and pain of upgrading for what better graphics and gadgets so users can mess up even more? An operating system is just that it operates software so you can do what you really need to get done on a computer. Microsoft should just provide this as a free upgrade (like IE 7) if users want it give it to them and continue to rip us off on other mandatory licenses for other productd they have implemented!
Microsoft shares fell 27 cents, or nearly 1 percent, to $30.26 in early trading Tuesday on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Apple is currently trading at $85.82. Hmmm.....
