Pogue's iPhone FAQ

Thank you soooo much, Apple, for shrouding the iPhone in such mystery that it's left everyone painfully confused. Seriously. Of course I didn't really want to get an iPhone ahead of time so I could help explain the device to confused would-be customers. That'd be crazy. Fortunately, the New York Times' David Pogue gets to fill in for me today. He's been using an iPhone for weeks and he's obviously been besieged with questions about it. And unlike the silent masses, Pogue has answers. His just-out FAQ is quite helpful.

Among the highlights from Pogue's FAQ (and the big questions/misconceptions that I've been asked about):

  • You can't use the iPhone with gloves or a stylus of any sort, only skin. (Sorry, robots!)
  • You can't use another SIM card beside the one that comes with the device. However, I'm sure this will be the first thing hackers start messing with, so stay tuned.
  • Again, a two-year AT&T contract is required. Required. It won't even work as an iPod without one.
  • No custom ring tones!
  • Using your own headphones is tricky due to weird design on the headphone jack. Adapters are available.
  • The only Bluetooth support is with a headset, not a PC or other devices.
  • You can't use the iPhone as a wireless modem, though I can't imagine you would need to. That's the whole point.
  • You can make calls and browse the internet via Wi-Fi at the same time.
  • Bookmarks don't sync with Firefox.
  • The iPhone really is as fast as it seems in the commercials... as long as you're on a Wi-Fi connection.
  • The camera has no flash, no zoom, and no self-portrait mirror.

Man, that's a lot of things that don't really thrill me and only a couple that do (OK, only one). But that's the Apple way: Ship the basic model first, then add features later (or let third-party developers do it with hardware add-ons).

And that's just the iphone price tagged at $600, I would have expected better for that price range! The service plan is worse, for the cheapest plan you only get 450 minutes and only 200 text messages a month! WHAT A RIP OFF!!! It will cost you more then $2000 to get this thing! And to add the cherry on top.. Apple nor At&t are willing to insure your $600 investment! Do they have any idea how many times people drop or loss their phones! I can see this thing going prepaid in the next few months.

By the description and reviews...this thing isn't even better than my dash. And why would they put two different keyboards for you to get used to...that's just foolish. And 200 texts on one of those plans??/ Are they insane?? They better step their game up on the second shipment of these things.

yes that is the rip off!! poor mothers and fathers who have to pay for this expensive plan and incomplete device. i was considering to get one but when the true nature of this phone reviled i change my mind because 1- it does not have GPS which i think its the most important feature in the phone. 2- even i think if they put gps chip on it still have to connect to internet (Google map) to show u something (thats the strategy of apple) which means if u go out of town its useless. 3- the price which is so expensive and its not affordable for students. 4- no games 5- all u have to do is to listen to music and u have to pay hundreds to buy song from itunes which that itself is another rip-off. over all i hope they make these correction before the sun freeze

Too bad that only skin works - there are tons of people that have skin problems or similar - and not being able to use it as a wireless modem also kills it for about 1/2 the people that want to purchase it. Otherwise its a great new toy - one that cell phone software developers like me will never be purchasing.
