You gotta have a little sympathy for any company that tries to make a big announcement the same week as the most hyped product in the history of the universe is launched, but God bless 'em, plucky Dell decided to roll out some new laptops this week anyway. Robin covered the new rainbow of colors the company is now offering, but there's a more interesting announcement under the hood: Free online storage bundled with all new Inspiron and XPS computers.
Dell's offering is called Dell DataSafe Online, a backup solution much like Xdrive and Mozy, which I've written about before. All Dell PCs (not just Inspiron, as mentioned in the story linked above) get 3GB. XPS PCs get 10GB. Upgrades are available for a fairly nominal fee. All software needed to get online is pre-installed on the PCs.
While I dislike pre-installed crapware, I'm a fan of doing anything possible to help people make backups quickly and easily, and DataSafe sounds like a swell idea. 3GB is a little chintzy, but it's a good start. Let's see other vendors follow suit!
Bear in mind this is different than the confusingly similar Dell DataSafe, which backs up your hard drive to another hard drive on your computer. Click the link to understand the difference.

If the iPhone doesn't fit your fancy, one of these four competitors could be the apple of your eye.

Dell is known for innovative marketing strategies who targets that perfect individual like you and me who need a better solution to data storage maintenance. I have no doubt the others will follow. But as always, Dells the first choice.
