Last-Minute iPhone News Roundup

You've got a matter of hours before your life is changed forever by the long-awaited, endlessly-discussed, hundreds-of-millions-of-hits-famous Apple iPhone. And yet with just minutes before it goes on sale, information about the device still continues to change, adapt, and grow. Here's a roundup of what's hitting the wires this morning, should iPhone be on your shopping list for tonight.

First, Apple now says it may not have enough phones to meet demand. Early reports said Apple would have up to 3 million phones available on day one, but that appears to have been overstated. Now Steve Jobs is saying that the company might not have enough phones to meet demand. I've heard other comments (equally unofficial) that stocks could run out by Monday. But there's no need to stand in line for one: You can order the iPhone online for delivery to your home or office! (UPDATE: This may be a bit overstated. As of Saturday, every Apple Store in the country still has iPhones in stock. On the other hand, online orders won't be delivered for 2 to 4 weeks.)

Curiously, reports are surfacing that AT&T has managed to boost the speed of its much-maligned EDGE network, possibly doubling it. At 200kbps, the service would still be fairly slow (only four times dialup), but easily twice what standard EDGE gives you. This has been a major complaint in early reviews of the iPhone. AT&T seems to have been taking a brute force approach to increasing the speed of the EDGE network by simply running more cable to its cell towers. The results aren't the 3Mbps or so of real 3G services, but every little bit helps.

Business users who want to get work email on the iPhone can rejoice now, as the iPhone can indeed support Microsoft Exchange email, provided your IT department makes the appropriate changes. Send this link to your friendly IT guy. Trust me: He loves getting questions about the iPhone! You're the first person who's thought to ask about it!

Meanwhile, the Apple Faithful™ are lining up like lambs to the slaughter at Apple stores around the country. The scene at these stores is obviously expected to be a madhouse. If you want a better shot at a short wait for the iPhone and you absolutely have to have it tonight, for Pete's sake, go to an AT&T store, which will almost certainly be far less crowded.

I'll add to this post with any other late-breaking iPhone news later today. But I'm hoping that this is it for now. Expect my full, hands-on review come Monday!

(UPDATE: My full review is now live!

I am happy seeing Apple doing good business, its good for economy. I would not get one myself due to it such a new thing which will have many updates and modification in the future... I am not very fond with AT&T, I had been rip off by them before and when people in a big hype like this, the service would get worst so I don't want to spend 600 bucks then 100 bucks each month for a lousy service. NO WAY!. Cheers to other people getting their new groovy gaget. I wish you all the best

I am an AT&T user and they stink, I dont have an iphone but a SE W810i, nice phone, but I have been dropped many many times since my phone switched over to AT&T on the screen. Man I miss Cingular and their incredible system. Somehow AT&T ruined a good thing...now who would'a thought! Save the big bucks and get as free phone and decide if they are for you!

I went to my nearest At&t store after i coached a baseball game and went to dinner, i was just going to play with it and maybe place my order, well they had 30 and were all gone. I went home and checked the apple website and the store locator said all stores in Atlanta had iphones, i called and sure enough they said they had enough left. i left home at 8:45, to the store by 8:55, out of the store with an 8gig iphone and case and back home by 9:10, they had boxes and boxes of them, looks like 10 to a case. Now all the talk, well it is a fun gadget, do men need to buy $40 cigars or do you really need a $7 drink or 2 or 4, do you need the new pair of shoes, ladies?, no you don't we buy stuff for fun, if we didnt' then we woudl all drive the most boring cars wear the same clothes and never have any fun so who cares if people want to buy something to show off or to have some fun with. Just have fun with it, let people enjoy and you all enjoy the little things in life that make you happy.

Only 20 phones available for sale in downtown DC AT&T store. Are they kidding? TWENTY!!!! They want to be able to say it was sold out in an hour. Who are they trying to kid? This will most certainly damage their relationship with thousands of faithful Apple customers.

I work near the Apple store at Stanford mall and witnessed the line that started growing yesterday....... People who wait in line for hours/days for a phone that they'll be able to get tomorrow by simply walking in to any Apple or AT&T store are criminally dumb. I'm guessing everyone waiting in line also waited in line for the Star Wars releases. Our population consists of two types..... People and Sheeple. Don't be a Sheeple.

AT&T stores could only sell what Apple sent them. Apple wanted most of the phones sold from an Apple stores. AT&T/SBC/Cingular has provided great service and reliability to me and my family for years. We have our home phone, wireless, internet, and TV with AT&T and they have been great. Apple has a product(Iphone) and they had to partner with a great company to provide the service for this product. Apple made a great choice in AT&T. If they would have picked anyone else I would have been worried about the service. With AT&T I am not worried at all!!!!

Our city of Wichita, Ks, got only 30 phone per location. And with three locations, thats 90 phones for a city of 300,000 plus people. What a dissappointment

I will have to wait at this time until I see the results as I have a Blackberry now. But one never knows. I have had nothing but problems with the Blackberry thru the Bes server. No e-mail for days at a time. The IT guys are great in taking care of the issues, the Bes server people have updated all of the software thru RIM, but it always seems to be a temporary fix. And we are on Cingular AT@T now. I will start putting away some bucks once I see the results in a few months....

On Friday, June 29, 2007 at 9:00 p.m. PDT I successfully purchased my 4 GB iPhone. Thank G-D I was successful. I can wait the 2-4 weeks for Apple to ship it to me. I adore all of the clever and intuitively-created Apple products. A user since 1987. Jay Baltimore City

I just got mine and its amazing, I went to the Apple store in Orlando and while I waited for about two hours in line there were plenty of phones for everyone before me and plenty of people after me. Its an amazing product and money well spent.
