You've got a matter of hours before your life is changed forever by the long-awaited, endlessly-discussed, hundreds-of-millions-of-hits-famous Apple iPhone. And yet with just minutes before it goes on sale, information about the device still continues to change, adapt, and grow. Here's a roundup of what's hitting the wires this morning, should iPhone be on your shopping list for tonight.
First, Apple now says it may not have enough phones to meet demand. Early reports said Apple would have up to 3 million phones available on day one, but that appears to have been overstated. Now Steve Jobs is saying that the company might not have enough phones to meet demand. I've heard other comments (equally unofficial) that stocks could run out by Monday. But there's no need to stand in line for one: You can order the iPhone online for delivery to your home or office! (UPDATE: This may be a bit overstated. As of Saturday, every Apple Store in the country still has iPhones in stock. On the other hand, online orders won't be delivered for 2 to 4 weeks.)
Curiously, reports are surfacing that AT&T has managed to boost the speed of its much-maligned EDGE network, possibly doubling it. At 200kbps, the service would still be fairly slow (only four times dialup), but easily twice what standard EDGE gives you. This has been a major complaint in early reviews of the iPhone. AT&T seems to have been taking a brute force approach to increasing the speed of the EDGE network by simply running more cable to its cell towers. The results aren't the 3Mbps or so of real 3G services, but every little bit helps.
Business users who want to get work email on the iPhone can rejoice now, as the iPhone can indeed support Microsoft Exchange email, provided your IT department makes the appropriate changes. Send this link to your friendly IT guy. Trust me: He loves getting questions about the iPhone! You're the first person who's thought to ask about it!
Meanwhile, the Apple Faithful™ are lining up like lambs to the slaughter at Apple stores around the country. The scene at these stores is obviously expected to be a madhouse. If you want a better shot at a short wait for the iPhone and you absolutely have to have it tonight, for Pete's sake, go to an AT&T store, which will almost certainly be far less crowded.
I'll add to this post with any other late-breaking iPhone news later today. But I'm hoping that this is it for now. Expect my full, hands-on review come Monday!
(UPDATE: My full review is now live!)

I am posting from my iPhone and it was not that slow. It was easy to update and keypad is neat. it corrects my spelling...nice
I saw the iPhone at an ATT store in Hanover PA. I was suprised to see a long line, complete with security guards. In Hanover, PA??? Wow! The phone is everything it is said to be. Absolutely amazing. I am leaving for Germany next week and wondered aboutt mapping features. There it all was. Easy to access. Easy to enlarge. Truly a masterpiece of design. Apple did it again.
Apple website indicates that phones purchased online won't ship for 2-4 weeks. What a Rip!! I was on the fence, but now hopped back to the side of No Buy.
Ohhhhhhh, wow. Does nothing new and different. Just an expensive toy. Makes the PS3 look like a bargain...
Just came back from AT&T store. No phones in store, order and pay and they will ship it to you. Could have done it online, but they lied to me when I went to stand in line. All that standing line was wasted. I will never buy an iPhone now. Hope none of you will either.
of course it has text messaging
The proof is in the pudding, and by xmas we will know what the fall out is from this phone and what Apple will DEMAND from AT&T in a data network. 3g vs EDGE? Really these users probably don't care right now because that is more of a business aimed service, and it is not very likely this will replace the Blackberry for the masses of *bizdrones. (bizdrones is a trademark of the really big corp, aka Borg, a div of Microshaft) This is a consumer phone, so get over it, not all devices have to be everything to everyone, they just have to be easy to use and introduce new functions in an almost seemless way. I'll adopt around Xmas, when revsions if not when a full 2nd gen phone comes out. I'll still be using my HP iPaq6925 with native (not assisted) GPS, Qwerty and so on. Friends and family get the iPhone number so when I want to go off the digital leash, I have a recreational phone that nobody has the number to. On a final note, texting is a pointless excersize reserved to teenage girls, directions and sports scores. Everytime in the boardroom a text is rec'd, the computer and monitors go all haywire and so everyone in the room knows it. Real subtle folks, real subtle when the buzz is picked up during my TV show tapings.
you all sound like a bunch of spoiled children.....i had to wait on line. losers buy iphones. an ipod and phone in one...one less thing for me to carry.....and free internet thru wifi...cant be beat.....
well idont really care (get the pun?) because it is way out of my range and i alredy have an ipod and hopefully there wont be any "playstation style shootouts"
too high priced wsaiting for a better version with more capabilites
All these antis get me. Is someone holding a gun to their heads forcing them to buy one? People who want one will buy one, knowing the limitations; those who don't want one, won't. Do they really think their comments will change someone's mind? Methinks they protest too much! jmhfnr
Softball0304...you can text message on the phone...you can't send picture messages. Why would you need to when you can just e-mail them from the full web browser and your e-mail client? Hmm...
Wasn't the IPod expensive at first? All electronics decrease in price. Just have a little patience!
I think all of you need to get off the pipe!
our store got all of 30 phones for a city of 25,000. the next closest store is 3 hours away.
I'll never buy an Apple product for as long as I live and to this day, I have never used or own an Ipod. The only way I'll have an Apple product is if 1) Got as a gift 2) Won a drawing and that was the prize
I bet there will be kinks in it. Just like with Vista, the big hype and many people ended up hating it. I def. woulnd't get the iPhone unless it was free.
whole article sounds like a corporate plug. what is Steve Jobs paying yahoo to host this article? this outlanshish and unwavering consumerism is why we've become a joke of a country.
When IBM came out with a computer for personal use, I decided it was overpriced and too slow for me. I knew if I wait, I can get a better value. I've been waiting 25 years, and I still will not buy one because a better one will be available in 6 months and it will be cheaper. I'm not a sucker, I'm going to wait for a cheaper more powerful one. Even if I can't have any fun while I wait, I take solice knowing when I do buy it I will have a faster one for less money and all those people for the last 25 years paid more and got less. Of course, while I've waited a lot of people used theirs and then died of old age, but I'm still waiting. You too can put off getting an iPhone until a better cheaper one comes along. If your like me, you'll eventually be right. But you'll never have any fun. People will die of old age using an iPhone while you guys wait for a better one to come along.

The iPhone in no comparison to AT&T 8525 which may not be as pretty and can only go as high as 2gig for storage still out performs the iPhone as far as conectivity and web browsing speed quad band and tri band and 3G, 400MHz processor and is upgradeable to windows 6.0 mobile. Ill take the 8525 for now and wait for the 2nd Gen iPhone
