Last-Minute iPhone News Roundup

You've got a matter of hours before your life is changed forever by the long-awaited, endlessly-discussed, hundreds-of-millions-of-hits-famous Apple iPhone. And yet with just minutes before it goes on sale, information about the device still continues to change, adapt, and grow. Here's a roundup of what's hitting the wires this morning, should iPhone be on your shopping list for tonight.

First, Apple now says it may not have enough phones to meet demand. Early reports said Apple would have up to 3 million phones available on day one, but that appears to have been overstated. Now Steve Jobs is saying that the company might not have enough phones to meet demand. I've heard other comments (equally unofficial) that stocks could run out by Monday. But there's no need to stand in line for one: You can order the iPhone online for delivery to your home or office! (UPDATE: This may be a bit overstated. As of Saturday, every Apple Store in the country still has iPhones in stock. On the other hand, online orders won't be delivered for 2 to 4 weeks.)

Curiously, reports are surfacing that AT&T has managed to boost the speed of its much-maligned EDGE network, possibly doubling it. At 200kbps, the service would still be fairly slow (only four times dialup), but easily twice what standard EDGE gives you. This has been a major complaint in early reviews of the iPhone. AT&T seems to have been taking a brute force approach to increasing the speed of the EDGE network by simply running more cable to its cell towers. The results aren't the 3Mbps or so of real 3G services, but every little bit helps.

Business users who want to get work email on the iPhone can rejoice now, as the iPhone can indeed support Microsoft Exchange email, provided your IT department makes the appropriate changes. Send this link to your friendly IT guy. Trust me: He loves getting questions about the iPhone! You're the first person who's thought to ask about it!

Meanwhile, the Apple Faithful™ are lining up like lambs to the slaughter at Apple stores around the country. The scene at these stores is obviously expected to be a madhouse. If you want a better shot at a short wait for the iPhone and you absolutely have to have it tonight, for Pete's sake, go to an AT&T store, which will almost certainly be far less crowded.

I'll add to this post with any other late-breaking iPhone news later today. But I'm hoping that this is it for now. Expect my full, hands-on review come Monday!

(UPDATE: My full review is now live!

in 4 months at&t will no longer have exclusive rights to the iphone. all cell companies will ,then the price will come down considerably. When the 2nd generation phone comes out at&t will be the first to carry it. me personally...i'll wait until a better phone with better plan options and faster speed comes out.

There's only one problem with the iPhone...AT&T. Couldn't they find someone with better coverage to partner with. Sprint and Verizon both would have been excellent choices. Can you hear me now? Not with the iPhone. I'll wait until a better service provider comes along or AT&T gets their act together.

Alright folks..enough about trashing Apple. Those who have not used an Apple product have never known the bliss of having a product that works out of the box. True, the iPhone is a bit on the expensive side but just think..buy an iPod..cost $250 and then you buy a Blackberry and it will cost you $300. Actually, it makes sense to buy an iPhone because it's one less item you have to carry. Plus, it has a ton of features other phones don't have. If you want one..buy one. If you don't want one..shut up and don't buy one. I work in Windows Tech Support and I would take a MAC/Apple user over a Windows user any day of the week. And for Christ sakes..spell check and read your post before you send it. Makes you look stupid when you are complaining about a product and you haven't mastered the one that you are currently using. APPLE USERS UNITE !! THE REVOLUTION HAS BEGUN ! iPHONE IS HERE !

The iPhone is nothing more than a beefed up Blackberry. Whats the big deal that it can play music?? Almost all new models these days can hold a memory card and play music. The motorola MAxx has a 2 megapixel camera. So WHAT?? I mean is it that amazing that you can get on the internet on a cell phone. woopty doo!! Thats cutting edge. NOT! the EDGE technology will be so slow that you will have a call come in before it can load. Navigation is included in Verizons services. AT&T is the WORST CARRIER ever. I had them and they drop calls all the time. Plus APPLE AND AT&T are RIPPING people off 500 bucks for a stupid phone that has only a stylish look, but lacks the hyped up cutting edge features. GO WITH VERIZON!!! Verizon has excellent plans and coverage. They also have really neat phones and you get a new phone every two years for FREE! The customer service for Verizon is unmatched by any carrier. Just make a call to Verizon and see for yourself. If you are bent on getting an iPhone, patience is a virtue because a 2nd gen will be out soon and the price will go down ALOT!! Till then check out Verizon!

I have to grin at most postings here, many irrelevant comments that have nothing to do with the phone and why its worth even buying or not. Nothing against the iphone, but most people here or in the US have no clue what high-tech cell phones even are. Just because Apple spends tens of millions on advertising and US cellular stores cell such worthless garbage, the iphone actually looks tempting. Unless you look at what's really out there. I've had the N95 for a month and it'll blow the iphone out of the water. About the only real plus about the iphone is its memory. Well you can buy a 4gb microsd for $60 for a Nokia, so paying big bucks for memory nowadays is pretty stupid, especially since you can't upgrade iphone's memory. 2 megapixel camera?? Isn't that the norm of about three years ago? I got a 5 megapixel, dvd quality video, and software which has been perfected over numerous years. heck the iphone can't even video conference since it doesn't even have a camera on the display side of the phone. Apple did a great job of marketing their product to people who want to own it just for the sake of owning it. Also, all the "cool" features that are shown on the commercials require better "cellular signals" than today's us carriers can even provide. Good luck downloading iphone's video on slow connection speeds that every carrier provides. Nokia is top of the line and the N95 is the do-all of mobiles. I even have GPS with maps and voice navigation. I didn't hear anything like that on the iphone, i don't even know if it records video. The specs that Apple released were so minimal that it didn't seem like the phone did anything at all. So, if Steve Jobs got to you with his advertising and you have no sense of reasoning or knowledge about cell phones, than go ahead, wait in line, overpay for something that really isn't the best thing out there. I'm not a Nokia rep here bashing apple, but I've been waiting over a year researching different phones and mostly waiting for Nokia to reveal its various N series modes, the N95 being its latest and greatest. All from a company that's been pioneering phones since the early 80s, yes, that's before Apple was even on the drawing board. I won't buy a notebook from Nokia and I definitely am not going to buy a cell phone from Apple. I might give it a try and see how the touch screen works, and how many fingerprints will it take to crap up the display...

Most people who don't want an iPhone are many of the same people who: 1. don't like or understand Mac computers 2. probably didn't want or understand the iPod when it arrived. 3. are quick to compare it to their phone or blackberries... It is NOT a phone. It is a multimedia device that makes calls. Get with the technology. If not with an iPhone with the competitor's models when they arrive. Move on people, move on...

You know why I want an I-phone. Voice mail selection. I no longer have to listen to the estranged husband to get to my call from you. Cool.

Just to remind you people... AT&T / Cingular are the worst cellphone companies ever. The have horrible customer service. Have fun~!

WTF people? "no texting"??? Learn about a phone before you complain about it. It has a function right on the home screen for texting. It even saves text conversations like IM'ing. The only complaint I have is the ringtone choices...I want songs as ringtones, and I believe that will be available soon. I love my Iphone and am extremely happy with my purchase, I've been an Cingular customer for 6+ years now...never had a problem with them.
