Here's a trend that has been years in the making. Since the advent of speed dial on land lines, people have been training themselves that memory is unimportant, placing every phone number you could need at the touch of a button. Now science has proven it: Phones, computers, and PDAs are making us dumb.
The stats: A quarter of UK residents (these studies always come out of Britain) don't know their home phone number. Only one-third know the birthdays of their immediate family. Half use one password, exclusively, presumably because they just can't remember any more.
The problem is pretty simple at heart: The less you use your memory, the study says, the worse it gets. The study indicates, shockingly, that people in their 50s and 60s have generally better memory than people in their 30s. Why? The older group was tasked with committing more to memory when they were younger, "training" their brains appropriately. Our gadgets make it simple to offload our memory to electronic devices. That's a good thing when it comes to keeping track of the 1000 people in your address book (each with multiple phone numbers and email addresses), but maybe we're taking it too far?
The good news is that you can exercise your brain without memorizing numbers by rote. Games like Brain Age and Sudoku and other mental stimulation can do just as good a job at keeping your memory sharp (and possibly even ward off ailments like Alzheimer's), the experts say.

i wonder how many names and numbers the writer of this report knows.after all,all they do is click a mouse on a pc all day.and they call u dumb hmmmmmm!
i have great memory! i do sudoku almost 24/7
Don't worry about it, your kids will figure out all these alien devices left us :-) "Interesting point. But you still have to memorize how to use all these features on your phone, computer, palm pilot, ect. I have trouble remembering all that, so does that make me dumb or dumber?!"
Honestly, I feel dumber by reader this superflous article! From the "professional studies", to the "British not being able to remember their phone numbers", this is why we have bad memory...to forget about the countless numbers of usless facts and opinions presented to the public everyday.
Phones are not making us dumb, they are just making us lazy. Technology is advanced because we advanced it, think of the things we have had to learn now we have new technology such as how to use Microsoft Office for documents, how to use phones, etc., they have not made us dumb, but somewhat lazy.
THE BRITISH ARE COMING THE BRITISH ARE COMING!!!! Goly Pete, know we can't even use are cell phones without people stopping us on the streets and saying that we will die because of bacteria from using a cell phone or people commenting that we will become stupid from storing peoples numbers! BTW I actually know all the numbers in my speed dial by heart. As I said before, THE BRITISH ARE COMING AND THEY ARE BRINGING THERE STUPIDNESS THE BRITISH ARE COMING!!!
never knew this very interesting
For everyone that says they don't understand what memory has to do with intelligence, memory is a major component of intelligence. Intelligence is difficult to define and measure but memory does play a part of measuring it in what little ways we can. You can easily look up info on the relationship between intelligence and memory if you're not convinced but the fact is, memory does influence intelligence - it's more than just memorizing things, anyway, and if this is all you believe memory is then it's no wonder you think this article is stupid. Or you can dismiss this information and go back to texting your BFF Jill. You know, something productive and stimulating for the brain.
if cell phones make you so dumb, does that mean that the people who CREATED the cell phones were dumb? and even memorizing everything that WORKS on the cell phone, that makes us dumb? i mean sure, we have or contact list, but we have to use or MEMORY to FIND that contact list, am i correct?
well, if my cell phone can remember a phone number, i dont see why i should have to.
I don't agree with this claim, okay cell phones may make us a little lazy but if there is a easy way use it. I think they are just helpful devices in our everyday life. Being a hard working American I think I deserve to relax my brain every now and then.
better memory = smarter person??? i don't think so! memory can certainly help for tests, however, won't help much in establishing an i.q. animals remember certain things better than humans (i have a cat that remembers people he dislikes even if he hasn't seen them for years...elephants can remember smells, sounds better than humans) yet nobody would consider them smarter than us. memory is a reflex. intelligence is not based on memory.
I think some of the people posting comments should rethink posting...they can barely type out what they're trying to say, let alone comment on what is or isn't dumb lol
I came out of a major shopping center a few weeks ago and had to laugh. As I sat at the light to go straight ahead out of the center I happen to notice that in the right turn lane next to me were FOUR Chrysle minivans in a row, ALL women around their 30s, talking on their cell phones as they proceeded to turn right. Is this the "IN" thing for that generation?!? Since then I have noticed literally thousands of women talking on their phones while they drive. I truly believe a good percent of them aren't even connected to a carrier! They just think it looks "cool" to drive and "talk " on the phone at the same time. Airheads....Then theirs the fools with the bluetooth ear pieces.....Are they that important they "need" to be connected at a waterpark, malls, restraunts etc? Hardly.... These are "nobodys" trying to look like their somebody! What a bunch of loosers....When I happen to run into somebody with one in their ear, I like to approach them and ask the for the time. I talk real loud and after, tell them I thought they had a hearing aid in their ear. Total retards. I also like to watch people with bluetooths while their talking and nobodys around. Sure, I know their on the darn thing but I love giving them the look like their nuts and sometimes make a "comment" to my wife how sad it is that this person "has the lights on but nobodys home".
so u think this is an article?
Good eye-catching title; however, slightly misleading. Although I feel dumb for even reading the article :) It is discussing memory problems due to technology, not IQ problems.
First of all, I've been saying what he just wrote for many years now. Our memories are like our bodies, they need to be worked out in order to function better. Secondly, dumb literally mean to make silent or to not speak. So, if your memory is bad and you cannot remember much, then you will not speak that often. Thus, making you dumb. Mr. or Miss Englishreprise, do you have a verbal reprisal for that? Or have I dumbfounded you? Consider the writer's context before issuing another dumb response next time.
This just seems shortsighted to me that certain conveniences like programming phone numbers into cell phones causes us to become dumber. I mean, we would at least have these numbers written down somewhere on an address book or you would be considered dumb before you touched the cellphone in the first place. There are a lot of numbers that people have to remember anyway, and it doesn't always cross our minds considering how we often have other things to worry about most of the time. So even before we programmed phone numbers into cellphones, these were numbers we had to look up sometimes, especially if we don't call them often. I think what we really need is more emphasis on education for adults, game nights instead of TV nights, things like that that which can give people a reason to broaden their horizons. Think about what can make us smarter, not dumber, in fact part of the reason we become dumb is that we lose insight on how we can improve ourselves if the only thing an article off of a website or magazine can say is a bunch of negative put-down material.
Oh my... At least I use my brain instead of letting something else do it for me.

I agree with some parts of the article (recalling memorizing text and phone numbers when younger), but I agree with the tech friendly comments. These are all tools to get things done.......ultimately a human being still has to do the work, check the spreadsheets, do a gut check in financials, etc. I don't see the world becoming a legion of software operators only anytime soon. Lastly, the most respected professions only use these "toys" to log appointments, not do the work.
