What Are the Odds of Getting Back a Lost Cell Phone?

What cell phone user hasn't had a phone drop out of his pocket, get left on an airport security conveyor belt, or (in my case) driven off with the phone sitting on top of the car? Did you get your phone back? While my handset was never to be seen again, in most parts of the world, things tend to turn out better. Reader's Digest (of all places) put 32 cities to the test to see whether lost cell phones would be properly returned, leaving 30 phones in heavily trafficked public areas, then calling them from a distance or waiting for a random callback.

How'd humanity fare in getting those phones back? In 28 of those cities, at least half of the phones were returned, and in 20 of them, a full two-thirds were. The worldwide average: a 68 percent return rate. That's better than I would have expected.

Who did best? A small town in Slovenia, where 29 of 30 handsets were returned to their owner. At the bottom of the barrel: Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur residents managed to return only 13 of 30 phones.

Other top cities included Toronto, Seoul, and Stockholm. New York City, the only American location tested, tied for fifth, with 24 phones returned.

While I could pontificate and ponder as to the reasons why some cities are better than others at returning property to their owners, I think the data is fascinating on its own. Here's the full rundown of all 32 cities (PDF link), and don't miss the full story, linked below, for a little insight into both the helpful and sometimes not-so-helpful human mind.

my phone fell off of a chair lift at a ski hill. A week later some guy found it and called the home number on it. I picked it up at the hill the next day. I'm not surprised that many cell phones get returned - there's not much anyone can do with someone else's phone, unless they're one of those phone scammers.

umm.. for the person who said that Seoul would have a small return rate, you haven't met genuine Korean people. They are always friendly and they will announce over the PA system if a phone is found in a mall or store. and Seoul ranked third place.. (27 phones returned!!) oh, and if you couldn't tell, i'm from seoul!!! azn and krn pride!! ^-^

One time I left mine the school bus and didn't realize it until later in the day when I went to make a call. Luckily it was still there after school, tucked away under the seat belt. It had fallen out of my pocket. I was surprised no one took it. (Especially the elementary school kids).

My theory would be to add a GPS chip. They seem to be pretty popular these days. The cost may go up @ time of purchase of the cell, but your insur. may be cheaper.

AN ADVICE IF YOU VISIT VIETNAM, OR STAY HERE...DON'T DARE TO PUT YOUR CELLPHONES NEAR THE WINDOWS OR DOORS...NO MATTER HOW HIGH YOUR ROOMS ARE! THIEVES/ROBBERS CLIMB ROOFS AND SNEAK INTO ROOMS OR USE ARM EXTENSIONS (I CAN'T IMAGINE HOW THEY DID IT) TO GET YOUR PHONES. IF YOU'RE OUTSIDE, DON'T DARE TO MAKE A CALL. IT'S MORE THAN LIKELY THAT SNATCHERS WILL WHIZZ BY IN MOTORBIKES AND BEFORE YOU KNOW IT, YOUR CELLPHONE IS IN HIS HANDS!

There is such thing, I think only for Sprint users; Sprint Family/Sprint Mobile Locater. It uses GPS and the network towers to locate said phone. Mobile is for Nextel (If not mistaken), and seems best for buisness. Becuasse it allows owners to send GPS directions to the phone holder. Sprint Family does the same thing just with out direction sending, rather just sending texts. Most of the time it's very accurate (when phone is making or reciving [data or calls]). It's a good rate too, 9.99/month. I curently use considering I travel and do alot, more important my Treo is my life line.

Here in the Philippines the chance of getting your phone back are slim to none. You try your test here, then you would say the Philippines is the worst.

I don't know where commorancy came up with those stats but in general i have to agree that the odds are low. Here in suburban Philadelphia my daughter has lost 2 phones that have never been seen again. One was at the local pool with people we see every day.

most times, if you have a GPS enabled phone, your provider can track its location, making it a little easier to find.
