Now I don't know what to believe. At all. Only two weeks ago it was reported a Service Pack 1 beta would come out in days. Then that was retracted and a "later this year" announcement was floated for the Service Pack. Now, the latest rumor says that Vista's Service Pack 1 won't come out until 2009 at the earliest. I can't imagine this is true, but considering the massive crush of misinformation coming out of Microsoft these days, it's about as reliable as anything else I'm hearing. Take the news as wholly unsubstantiated, of course.
With Microsoft rumored to be eying 2010 for its next OS release, a 2009 Service Pack release seems like the dumbest thing imaginable that Microsoft could do. Even if it was just a minimal Service Pack designed to fix some basic problems with Vista and pay lip service to the idea of giving Windows users a little more confidence in the troubled OS, releasing a 2007 Service Pack is a good business idea. We aren't asking for much, really. Tweak the performance issues. Fix networking and file copies. Throttle down power usage. That sort of stuff.
Meanwhile, scorn is coming at Microsoft from all directions, the most recent from Acer president Gianfranco Lanci. (Globally, Acer is the fourth largest manufacturer of computers.) In his complaint, Lanci points to Vista's stability problems and slow performance, plus the application problems many users are experiencing with the new OS, as many older apps still won't run on Vista. According to Lanci, Vista has not led to any substantial increase in PC sales for his company, a stark contrast to older versions of Windows.
Other vendors have been less vocal about their frustration with Vista. Dell, for example, is offering both Linux and Windows XP on select computers. Other vendors continue to provide an XP option as well.
Want XP to continue as an option beyond its January 2008 termination date? It's not too late to let your voice be heard.

It really won't matter if we voice our opinions to Microsoft. Vista, unlike Microsoft Bob and ME, will be the one version of Windows that Microsoft does continue foist onto us, like it or not. Even if we voice our opinions, Microsoft will still move forward with their plans for XP's obsolescence. So, don't bet that the obsolescence date won't come and XP will be gone. Vista really is turning out to be the next Windows ME of the Windows line, though. Microsoft really doesn't much care or show much sympathy as clearly demonstrated by the lack of immediate service packs to fix these incompatibility issues. Instead, they're just letting the users (victims) flounder without help. But, even still, these incompatibilities won't get in the way of making XP obsolete.
at my age windows works very good i hear 2 many complaints that vista does not work good.
It will be a major disaster for Microsoft if they do not soon issue SP1 to correct the most egregious flaws in Vista. I purchased a Vista laptop and it will not print to a printer shared by an XP Home machine. MS had a KB934643 acknowledging this issue, but has withdrawn it. There are many other networking glitches.
bmorton66 - I've had that trouble as well.
I question the truth behind this. Mostly because of all the rumors that have been flying around lately, and because it just doesn't make sense. Windows 7 in 2010, yet having a SP in 2009 would be useless. I'm guessing that it won't be this year that the final SP comes out. More likely the middle to end of the first half of 08, since SP1 Beta 1 is slatet for the end of this year. Also, while I don't go there, the end of the source's article made me question the truth behind it even more, or if it was just a snide anti-MS rumor someone started. I guess we'll just half to wait and see, and make sure to let MS know we want SP1 ASAP, or at least a reliable release date.
bought vista premium and thought i was get a good upgrade from XP pro.dumb on my part.took three days to get online, had to buy a new network card and will need to get a new graphics card. heck I have a nvidia Gforce.problems are drivers.vista is so new that most hardware on pc that don't already come with vista are not compatable.want vista just buy a new pc with vista on it.if you have XP I would stay with it until windows gets all the bugs out.
I was hoping that the rumor was true and that was out soon so I could buy it, but now old well!

Tons of games for the MAC - all the popular ones have MAC versions - and you can run all of your Windows programs as native MAC programs now too - no reason to not get a MAC - except for the premium price for the systems... But SP1 for Vista in 2009? Sheesh... No wonder Billy G. is leaving M$...
